- Nick toons are normally well known for being bright and happy beacons of childhood innocence. They’re usually colorful and the characters are nice and friendly to each other. However, there is one major exception to this rule; that being Invader Zim. Unlike the other cartoons Nick aired, it’s well known for just how dark and mean spirited it is, and that has kept its popularity up throughout the years. It’s filled to the brim with creepy stuff… So keeping it contained to just 10 dark moments overall is pretty difficult. But hey, what were you expecting from the creator of “Johnny The Homicidal Maniac”? For this list, we’re taking a look at entire episodes; so every single moment will be accounted for in ranking these disturbing episodes.

Yeah, but that's what made it so great.
How Jhonen Vasquez got on a kids channel is still beyond me. Did they do any research into his work? JTHM, Squee, Fillerbunny definitely doesnt say kids creator for me. But it resulted in s great show.
Squee was actually what got Nickelodeon's attention on him.
Invader Zim was dark, and that's why I loved it. It was different and not afraid to push the envelope on what was allowed on Nick at the time.

@@TheDerpyBoi Well, Ren and Stimpy had excessive cartoon violence, sure, but Invader Zim is more like a horror show with some if its concepts being pretty terrifying.
Basically, Ren and Stimpy made us wince. Invader Zim made us creeped out. Both traumatized a generation.

You forgot Keef's life is left ambiguous hanging at the end of the episode; for all intents and purposes, he fell off the roof trying to chase that squirrel and died.
Still, a great list for a great cartoon!

Keef was actually supposed to die in that episode, by Nickelodeon didn't want that.
Keef was supposed to die in that episode, there was going to be a metal electric fence below, he would’ve been electrocuted and died, but Nickelodeon didn’t want any of the characters to die

The comics got even darker. There was one issue where the main four characters get their body's swapped. Dib ends up going insane from living in Gir's malfunctioning body, Gir is replacing parts of his new human body with random machinery, and Gaz is driven by Irkin instincts to take over the Earth while Zim is too weighed down by Gaz's natural apathy to stop her. The issue ends with Gaz inslaving humanity and exiling Zim and Dib to the moon

I’d say dark harvest definitely earned a higher spot up- that episode was traumatizing for me

I love this show
There's that fairly new Enter the Flourapus, or whatever it was call, Netflix movie. Unfortunately, that's the only new thing I know of.
I don’t know how truly dark this was, but what I do know is there were times when I had to change the channel just so I could stop laughing and catch my breath. Between Zim and Dib this show was ridiculously funny.

I grew up with no cable so pbs kids was my childhood, the germ episode reminded me of the germ episode from arthur where buster gains an irrational fear of germs after being influenced by diseases he sees, when he starts a poll party, he wears a gas mask and makes everyone put gloves on and use hand sanitizer, soon, he realizes that not all germs are bad and stops being so paranoid of them everywhere he goes

I always wonder what greatness the world would have been had the creator not been interupted as much by Nickelodeon. The constant absurpt changes he was requested to make caused him to be burned out, even outside of the budget issue the series gave as it (which were waaaay above other things for its time both in the technique used(which simply lacked experienced people for how novel it was for it's time) and the overall costs of the technique as it took a long time to produce anything at all.
I was watching this show on Hulu and I was 4 episodes in until Hulu removed every Nickelodeon show they had. Rip

The episodes that scared me the most as a kid were The Halloween Special (nightmare Gaz still freaks me out), Dark Harvest, Hobo 13, and Gir Goes Crazy and Stuff. I'm okay with those now, but the one I still can't bring myself to watch even as an adult is Bestest Friend. I have a huge phobia of eyes being removed.
I feel like there were some episodes that are missing from this video. Such as Plague of Babies, The Most Horrible X-Mas Ever, The Wettening, Career Day, and Rise of the Zitboy.
There’s also some ones that could go to the bottom of the list, like Nanozim, The Frycook What Came From All That Space, Gaz, Taster of Pork, Hamstergeddon, Bloatys Pizza Hog, FBI Warning of Doom, Walk For Your Lives, and maybe Walk of Doom

I watched the whole show a while ago and....wow I really blocked out a lot of those episodes! The germs and organ snatching stuck with me since childhood tho XD

Are we not gonna talk about the episode Hobo 13 where the tallest send zim and that random irken flying straight towards the sun. Its clear that zim got away but he didn't notice the irken tied behind his seat so its a good chance that he didn't make it. It isn't as disturbing as say dark harvest,but its still pretty dark when you think about it. The tallest literally tried to kill zim and that irken.
To be fair though, both of them deserve it

Bad Bad Rubber Piggy is the only episode that kept me up! Why? Cuz of Dib's face while attacking Zim with that suit. I don't do it anymore, finding other episodes creepy though not scaring me, but his face still gives me creeps.

I could see the career day episode and the hunt for chicken foot also being candidates on this
I think Keith died after he fell off the building, the eyes exploded in his head, and what actually made it scary was the smoke, music, and Gir still stirring the cake batter. I feel Zim turned the kids into zombies in Dark Harvest, and I never knew Gaz actually ate a bit of Dib with no hesitation.

The episode with the Time Machine in the pigs where he was trying to hurt Dib that whole episode was dark as a kid that shit gave me anxiety I was like well played episode but that is scary.

Bad bad rubber piggy is definitely terrifying with the fact that dib straight up die and his father turn him into a cyborg to keep him alive and the fact the audience can see tubes in dib head and neck
