    I laid down fresh st Augustine at my new house in Brandon. Looked amazing and it was a ton of work. We were in a drought but I found out I was legally allowed to water since it was new sod. I watered it according to every professional I talked to or watched a video. I used proper fertilizer, sea kelp and I thought I had it down. Than one section started to brown and than the next and no matter what I did I died completely out even when we started getting amazing rain. It was depressing because all the other yards looked amazing due to the rain.
    So I started to notice what looked like little holes and mounds everywhere. I’m guessing now it has to be chinch bugs. I’m hopping I can try again and be successful

      Chinch bugs do not make mounds that I know of. Watch the video and try the test I do and you should be able to see them. I notice you did not say that you had any preventative measures. They should be done each year. I cover that also. Subscribe Button for new videos: bit.ly/3aToJ3H

    If you get crabgrass, use baking soda 👍🏻 Pest companies can’t use but they will tell you, it works 👍🏻 Also putting sand on your lawn in the spring works magic!

    Retiring to The Villages Florida, Frank, has been very successful in treating chinch bugs. He has a couple of videos, before and after, on RUclips. I think the grass is likely infested when the new lots are sodded.

    Thanks for sharing this information. I knew something was wrong with our yard besides being new Sod, hot and dry. I called my lawn care company Superior next day they confirmed the bug problem sprayed and will be back two weeks to apply nitrogen fertilizer. I have been told it takes about a year for new lawn to really look decent here in central Florida

    I bought my house last summer. Thinking about it now the lawn probably had some chinch bugs. I haven't mowed grass since I was in high school so I used a low height setting without knowing St Augustine should be 3-4 inches high since that is what I did for my parents' yards. I think cutting it too short stressed the grass and allowed the bugs to kill more of my lawn. I ordered some liquid products to do at least 2 treatments before adding sand and soil to encourage St Augustine to grow stolens over the dead areas.

    I see your video was posted about a year ago, so, evidently, @ least in some states, according to one of our most trusted, knowledgable plant nurseries in NC, Sevin was removed by government action from the market.

    • @RustyNelson
      @RustyNelson  Месяц назад

      I think that you need to revisit your knowledgeable plant person because this is not true. Sevin is a brand and has many type of products. So to just say Sevin really means nothing like saying Kleenex. The old Sevin used the active ingredient carbaryl, and the concentrate was kind of a thick, white liquid and low odor. The new Sevin uses the active ingredient that is quite popular with commercial vegetable and fruit growers called Mustang Max (active ingredient of zeta-cypermethrin. The stuff I use does not have carbaryl. Subscribe Button for new videos: bit.ly/3aToJ3H

    Good video Rusty. I am not fond of St. Augustine grass, but that is what we have. It's less drought resistant than a Bermuda or Zoysia and more susceptible to disease and pests. Are you also treating for the Mushrooms that pop up? I suppose that confirms the existence of a fungus but by treating for that fungus would that undue the positive fungus you mentioned in combating Chinch bugs?

    I like your ideas on treating cinch bugs. Never heard of Merit, I Might try it. The Florida Dept. of Ag has a lot of useful info on this subject. Their extension service can also do a soil test and sod test if you are not shure what is killing your grass.

    When we cut our grass at 4 inches we sink. This grass doesn't look 4inches. I rather grass I don't sink in so I prefer to mow it shorter. Long grass stresses me out. I could handle this yard.

    Wow. A LOT of chemicals! First, don’t over fertilize. Twice yearly application of a properly proportioned fertilizer (NO weed and feed) is plenty but no more than 3 times a year April through October. Second, please be sure to read, re- read and read again all instructions each time you treat your lawn, and follow them religiously! The Florida aquifer is only a few feet below ground level. Anything not absorbed by plants end up in our water. Only apply chemicals if you don’t use a professional service.
