I feel that not enough deserved recognition was ever given to John Paul Jones' TERRIFIC bass work, especially in this song! It's what I always hum along with, in this song particularly! Outstanding! John Paul Jones is a master of groove. But it's the bassists fate to always be taken for granted I suppose. I was born too late to ever see LedZep play, but I was lucky enough to see Them Crooked Vultures perform with JPJ. The highlight of that gig for me was somewhere halfway through when the others just let him do his thing, hanging back , just nodding along or tapping their feet (Josh Homme lighting a cig) while watching this legend do his magic. It wasn't even a solo really.... just JPJ laying down a groovy bassline. Everyone in the crowd was entranced, dancing like they would if they were at home.

I played this to death when it came out. It was the most amazing record I'd ever heard, and it still holds up beautifully. 51 years ago.. hard to believe.
But when Robert Plant was asked about that in the past few years...he says he only said it because it sounded good for the song. He had no intention of it being that reference. he had no idea of what frame of mind he was in back in those days.

I'm old, so I can tell you that before any internet, computers etc, in the 1960s the London music scene was hot and was THE place to be. I was lucky to be in high school when bands such as Led Zeppelin, The Who, Earth Wind and Fire, Chicago, Doobie Brothers, Ohio Players, Aerosmith, and many more were in their prime. The concerts were awesome. Miss those times. If you want to hear some more good bass arrangement listen to Heartbreaker by Zeppelin, and Four Sticks for some unique drumming. Now imagine a time when video culture barely existed and in it's place stood an audiotory cultural paradise where every great rock song ever recorded was blasting out of every speaker within your community. Growing up in the 70's and 80's was glorious and magical.
As talented as Jimmy is, John's bass line made this song. If you get the chance check out the isolated bass line to this. The man is a beast on whatever instrument he picks up
If you isolate the bass and take everything else away, you're left with a part of something great, but it wouldn't be "Ramble On" ... This studio masterpiece is exactly that, taken as a whole... I can't even imagine this song without the bass, but it's totally silly to say that the bass made the whole song... Not even close! Anyone saying this clearly missed this masterpiece.

I saw Robert plant and Jimmy Page in Toronto, I was 17 yrs old. THE BEST CONCERT EVER! It was a sunny day in 1998 at the Molson Ampitheatre and just after the concert there was a fireworks show. Holy shat! Greatness
When their drummer John Bonham died, they just basically said, "It's over." and they broke up immediately. That's how important he was to what they did.
Love your laugh; it's infectious. We can never get enough Zeppelin. I highly recommend ten years gone by this group. It's their most melodic and soulful piece.

If your going to do a Zep song I believe you should do "How Many More Times" ( not the live version.) I never see anyone doing that song and I think it's one of their top 5 songs. Take it from someone who saw Zeppelin when I was 10yrs old and thee old Boston Garden in 1977. That song was the one that made me when I got home, smash all my 45 disco records.
This is still one of those basslines you want to play everyday and Plant's multitracked vocals give you a real choice as a homealone singalong. It is still one of my favourite tracks.
I’ve heard discussions about what Bonzo was drumming on, a guitar case, or a vinyl seat, I’m not sure if anyone knows. JPJ’s bass was art! And those high notes Jimmy came in with for the solo.

ok young whipper snapper you got me re-living some of my youth. In 1973 led zep played Madison Square Gardens in NYC. They filmed the concert and released a live album in 1976. Now before there was computers, personal cel phones etc etc, automobiles, and Mcdonalds hamburgers they had this thing called midnight shows at selected theatres. That was the big thing for us juveniles. Well they put out the film THE SONG REMAINS THE SAME that coincided with the album of same name. I took my girlfriend. As the concert/film was progressing throughout the night my girl and I were enjoying the show along with the full house until it got to the 28 minute version of Dazed and Confused. Jimmys guitar playing was so intense that my girlfriend had an anxiety attack right then and there and we had to immediately leave the theatre just so she could calm down. We did not go back in for it was too much. true story and no neither of us did drugs. Its obvious you have experienced what our entire generation has with the mighty zep so I recommend that you privately view this film and get the full impact we all experienced. You will never forget it for the rest of your life. oh just a fun fact I'm from Detoilet (Detroit) and there was this garage band called Grand Funk Railroad who opened for Zep in Detroit and proceeded to blow zep off the stage. Peter Grant who was zeps manager a man who stood 7 foot tall and 7 foot wide grabbed Terry Knight (GFR Manager) by the throat and lifted him off the ground and said; take your band off the stage IMMEDIATELY! The power was cut in the middle of a song the crowd went nuts and destroyed the place. True story.

Zeppelin was one of those diamond in the rough scenarios where fate dictated that 4 unbelievably masterful musicians would find each other and create arguably the greatest musical enterprise ever created. It's one of those things like classical music where you will still have people analyzing it centuries later. It's the pure definition of art.
Especially listening to this song with headphones, you have to appreciate Jimmy Page as an amazing producer. And that bass line! John Paul Jones is a the goat bassist and couldn’t be the same band without him.

8 tracks were laid in the studio and produced by Jimmy Page 1969 (I was ten), Classic Zeppelin, keep it simple. This and a few other songs they did were about the “One” Ring to rule them all... (the she in the song-Gollum’s precious). JRR Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings was a great influence on Robert Plant song writing. Oh and the dueling guitars were acoustic and electric played by Jimmy. (the she in the song-Gollum’s precious). JRR Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings was a great influence on Robert Plant song writing. Oh and the dueling guitars were acoustic and electric played by Jimmy. But I agree that John’s bass makes this song. But all the Nerdy BS aside you get it! “Eargasm”!!!!😎 One of the all time greats from Led Zeppelin...😍
