Want to see Alice Springs AND do the Simpson? My next trip would be via the Barkly Highway (highway 66) from Mount Isa to Tennant Creek. I want to keep my teeth, so the Plenty Highway (12) is out. Once you have done the Alice, one place I can highly recommend is Ruby Gap (East MacDonnell ranges). On your way to the Simpson you must stop at Dalhousie Springs. The Simpson is not as bad as it is made out as long as you are sensible, have recovery gear and have some mechanical knowledge. We went through when Eye Creek had some water in it. The bird life was magnificent.
You gave me a real laugh on this one! Anyone who thinks that everywhere in Oz is warm all the time should have a week in the Canberra area in winter! It's 9.45 am and the temperature outside is 3° C - but the grass is still white with frost. WAY better than Tuesday's -4° C. Melbourne and Hobart are nowhere near as cold as Canberra - they are south but we are at much higher altitude. BIG advantage of this climate is NO CANE TOADS!
you sound properly Australian with your attitude to critters...leave them alone and they will leave you alone...plus glad you have caught on to the use of spiders ....good luck to you...
i'll tell you this but as Aussie like to tell tall tales take it as you like i was in Darwin many years ago in the army . you usualy see two people walking together on the beach with a dog this is because they first throw the dog in the sea and if the dog dosen't get taken by crocs it's safe to swim

Take your cold weather gear with you to the Alice, dry means no clouds overhead, means cold at night. Cloud cover keeps the days heat in the ground longer. If you are driving, take supplies with you, food, water, extra petrol, check your spare tyre, to get yourself out of trouble. If it's flooded forget it, bad time to travel. If you break down, stay with the car. Heat stroke is deadly. Better to not need extras, than not have them when you do. Never Ever, follow a min-min light.
Now that I've given my 6 things that I think about pertaining to Australia, I thought I'd offer 6 myths foreigners believ about your northern hemisphere counterpart, Canada: 1. Moose walk down the main streets if Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver. 2. Canadians all live in igloos. 3. It's arctic weather everywhere in Canada all year round (Hint: it isn't). 4. That we say "eh" at the end of every sentence, and pronounce about as "aboot" (we don't). 5. That we're basically the same as Americans, just more polite (partly truw/partly false). 6. That all Canadians speak French (only 20% do; the other 78% speak English).
Mmm? YOU DO say "aboot". As Australian tourists we were always asking directiobs and got a majority of "aboots". Glad you do or I could not tell you from Americans! Having spent a ridiculous time waiting for a cab at Lester J Pearson in 30° heat - in late September - I can easily confirm it gets hot. We caught a limo rather than wait any longer in the heat. Having then gone to Montreal and Quebec City I can confirm it's bloody cold in October!
“I need to cut my grass”. 😂 Stand in line mate! We have 40 acres of horse property. I have serious weed spraying to do as well as slashing and mowing the facilities but the late heavy spring rain thanks to La Niña has seriously messed with my plans! That’s not to mention patching up the unsealed driveway sections!
The awful Kikuyu "lawn" in our back yard is a jungle! The small mowers won't touch it and the big ride on just sinks! YIKES! Gotta get it short before snake season!

Brisbaine is warmer again in winter than Sydney about the same in summer.Cairnes, Darwin and Broome are hot year round (realy they only have 2 seasons the dry and the wet ) christmas is about the middle of the wet season and it buckets down as been known to make it inpossible to get around at all in heavey rain.
There were certainly some hot days when we were in Melbourne and we had our fair share of cold days as well 😊. It’s fair to say that the climate is not the same across Australia, that was the point we were making 😊

I live on Acreage about 50Km South of you guys, just be aware after a big wet (like now), the ground can be very boggy. I've bogged my tractor/slasher a few times and had to get outside help to pull me out. The weight of the tractor just sinks into the boggy ground. What I do now is walk around the area I want to mow first, to see how water logged the ground is.
But we get days over 40c a few days a year in Melbourne. Black Saturday was 47c just before the fires. You get a more regular temperature in Queensland. We do also get cold days in Summer and I have seen snow twice in winter in the 40 years I have lived here....just north of Melbourne.

Hey BAM Famalam the shrimp/prawn thing came about because Paul Hogan's ad was directed at encouraging Americans to travel here, based on the interest generated after the Crocodile Dundee films came out. Americans use the term 'shrimp' for what we Aussies call a prawn - the tourism marketing gods told him to call them shrimps in the advertising else the Americans wouldn't understand what he was saying. I think they were wrong - Americans have the ability to learn new things - and all the rest of us have had to learn lots of new words and products in US advertising - they don't change the terms for us!
