Maybe the character is more natural that way. Like if they dont tell you precisely how to act it and you just do a character and that character connects with the character they had in mind, then that person is really right for the part. Or maybe they dont really have an exact idea of how they want to character to come off so they build off of what an actor produces naturally. I have no idea, I'm just spitballin', but I could see how it might be beneficial.
