For the fish eggs, use a netting almost like a tennis racket but more fine. Gently rub the fish eggs over the netting and they should come off the membrane much easier.
Yes i was going to say the same thing. For the size of egg just use a similar size mesh net or wire to rub the eggs against into a container. They could have had a massive surplus to trade with their neighbors or save for chicken feed.

Josefine Johansson....That's amazing! Many years ago I had anxiety as a child (I had some medical issues that the doctors couldn't diagnose UNTIL I was 28 yrs old. I was teased unmercifully in school) and my parents put a TV in my bedroom and it really helped me to relax and fall asleep. (Back then of course TV wasn't on all night like it is now, so after the TV went off at 1:30-2:00 am, the radio would come on. (My dad made timers that we plugged the TV set and the radio in, so that when the timer turned the TV/Radio off, you could just push a button and re-start either the TV or the Radio. I sleep with my TV on...and to me it's relaxing. I have medical issues that wake me up a lot, so I will just wake up and either watch TV or read until I fall back to sleep. It's great to know that videos help you with your anxiety......it helps me too!

Wow, you guys are in high gear preserving the bounty. Everyone is eating well now and as winter sets in. It is good to see you work as a team. My Mom did all the canning through the heat of summer and she pretty much ended up hating having to do it.
I started in the "back to the land movement" early 70's and have been doing this kind of lifestyle ever since, BUT I have learned so much from you guys! You obviously have been doing this for a while, in Oregon and before. I grew up in the Bay Area and went to college in San Luis Obispo, bought a 6 acre lot and built a house from a recycled WWII surplus Army Barack , all while in college. I put myself through college with a Chinese Catering business and grew my own chicken, eggs and vegetables for it. The one thing I want to introduce you to is Egg Foo Yung (EFY). It is so easy to do right out of your garden, but you will be amazed how good it tastes. I sprout mung beans, broccoli seed, perella seed, alfalfa, etc. Sprouts are so easy to do, flavorful, and nutritious, even in winter, and it doesn't take very much room EFY is mixed in a bowl. Add chopped onion, chopped sprouts, chopped leaves from your garden, some chicken, meat, fish, or concentrated leaf protein -- and of course eggs. If it is too soupy add some flour or pancake mix. You stir it up, spoon it out into a frying pan, and cook like pancakes until golden brown. I usually put a gravy or sauce on top, which adds a lot. You can make a quick sweet and sour sauce by simmering a little water, a little gourmet vinegar and your favorite jelly, or you can make a gravy from Bragg liquid aminos and garlic. I used to make a wine from elderberries and let it turn into vinegar. Delish. There are an infinite number of variations. From start to finish, it takes less than ten minutes to make EFY. It was so easy to do after a long hard day in the garden.... The unexpected thing I have learned from the two of you is that while Alaska has a short growing season, the days are so long, things grow better and faster. It looks like it works better. Frozen soil in winter is the best kind for growing potatoes. Thank you for sharing your experience.

I'm from Poland. I grew up on fresh milk. When the milk turned out to the sour yogurt we were happy (not like today, when milk is old and taste awful), we were drinking it to dinner usually. There's so many different ways to eat it. It was delicious 😋 Great memories ☺️

Not only you are allowed to go to the woods in Poland for most of the time safe and relaxing walk, but also you can pick the delicious mushrooms and take them home without any fines or concerns that you are on some else's property. Till this day when I visit, I try to go there around the time when they are in growing pick. Chears.

Hi! I am from Finland and we take a baloonwhisp and simply whisp through the fish eggs a couple of times when they are laying in the salt water brine. All membranes stick to the whisp. So easy and makes caviar totally worth your time. Thanks for your inspiration-great to see your somutions in a similar climate!
Thats also the way I like to do it I just do it in ice cold water and gently whisk it so not to break too many of the eggs. I always start with breaking the membranen with ny fingers and keep whisking til there are no more membranens sticking to the ballonwhisk. Then use the salt water brine and a bit of sugar.

I think your channel has become one of my high end favorite channels. I love what you do, the sustainable way you live your life and how you take care of everything to feed you and the animals. It is a calm place to visit and learn bunch of stuff. I have no experience of gardening, but this is the second summer i have tried to grow my own food in small patches in my garden. Leeks, onions, beans, sugar snaps, beetroots, carrots, potatoes, tomatoes, bell peppers, chilli fruits, different kind of lettuce, strawberries, rubarbs, herbs and edible flowers. I am doing ok, and now i am learning how to preserve it all. Canning is a new thing for me, and i take great pleasure in watching what you guys do. Living in northern Sweden, we have the same kind of climate, summer is short, and everything has to grow fast to be able to harvest. Therefore your channel is giving me a whole lot and i learn alot in the process. I want to thank you guys for that. Something you should try, if not already done it, is to make chips out of Tuscan kale (if that is the right name). I believe i saw it in your garden. Hack it up, put vegetable oil on it, some salt and put them in the oven for like 7 minutes. They are delicious, and makes a great treat if wanting something else than potato chips! The taste is really coming out and it is crunchy and so good! You guys should make a cookbook. I would by it for shure! Thank you for sharing. :)
Since you two are into pickling I thought I'd mention a regional speciality from where I am. Fish pickle with lots of onions and curry spices. It's an Easter favourite here in my home town. Really, really good. You can do the onion curry pickle on it's own without the fish too, and it goes really well with almost anything. Maybe something more exotic for you two to try. I love how capable you are without using gadgets and heavy machinery. My only advice as life changes is continue to take care of each other, even when it’s difficult. After 15 years and 3 kids it is still the best advice I have heard yet. ❤️❤️❤️

I have been canning this week as well. I canned apple pie filling, succotash, stewed tomatoes, and tomatoes juice. I blanched and frozen zucchini and squash. I sliced and frozen onions and green peppers. I was gifted some more apples, onions, zucchini, and green pepper as well as a few sweet potatoes. I purchased some peaches. I have some more work to do. Love you all. Keep working hard and trusting God.

Years back I worked for Icicle Seafoods in Petersburg, AK. I did a week in the Egg room. We rubbed the eggs on a screen then. The eggs (chum) would go through the screen and the 'skein' would be left over. However. The Sockeye eggs was packed as they were into small tub's, like butter comes in, with lots of salt. Next time. Try frying the Sockeye eggs with the skein still on, in some bacon fat. Yummy! Go to your local Goldl Mining Supply Company or online and buy different sizes of screen and a pair of cotton gloves. 1. Rub your eggs (King, Sockeye, Coho, Chum, Pink). 2. Soak 2 minutes and rinse as you like. 3. Lay brined eggs on that Large Window Screen for 24 hours in cool dark area. 4. You now have Caviar! Jar up. Yum yum! For Sockeye. I would not rub them. I'd pan fry them only, or, I'd would salt brine them whole and jar. Snack time: Crispy fried egg sandwich with Sockeye Caviar. Yum!

It's 2 years later, I live in South East Texas so not even similar climate, I have a large family, and not near as much time as I'd like to fish and hunt. Yet I still love your videos😂 even though I live much differently I love your tips! They are simple and very well explained which is much appreciated when I can understand it over screeching young children. Also applaud yall on your team work in the kitchen, when I am canning I need everyone OUT of my kitchen😅 probably need to work on that.
Finally catching up with your channel. We want to cry whenever we see your garden videos. Our summer literally just started 2 weeks ago in our valley hole. Haha! It's really frustrating. Our corn, cabbage, squash, and tomatoes are coming along but if summer ends early we're hosed. Great to see you guys stocking up on food stores from the garden. The Keefer cheese and caviar looked scrumptious.
If you throw the veggies into some ice water, called shocking, after you blanch them they will stop cooking and stay nice and bright green for freezing.
Can you guys do a video talking about any hardships/difficulties as you go through the seasons? I grew up on a farm and although it was the best time of my life, it was also very hard. I love your videos and enjoy watching your journey.
Beautiful seeing the bees pollinate. Bee population is down here in northern Illinois. Had a bunch all the time up until three years ago, this past year it was minimal. Maybe next season they come back in droves. Have a great day!

You two are killing it for food storage. Save some of that herb white wine vinegar for your mustard. Vinegars make all the difference. Chicken feet also make all the difference in your stock. They are the bomb for adding collagen to each jar and dehydrate them for dog treats!

Tip for extracting the eggs from the roe: Use a piece of 1/2 inch screen placed over a bowl. Simply gently rub the roe in a circular motion over the screen and the eggs come right out. I learned this from an old man up in Mesick, MI where we go salmon and steelhead fishing in the Manistee river. We use most of our egg harvest for making spawn sacs for bait. But we do also make a good deal of caviar also. I have a feeling that if you try this method you'll be more apt to make caviar again.

Next year, you could try waiting for first snow to harvest the kale. Then when you blanch it, you can throw it onto the snow to flash cool it. This will help it stay greener and have more life! Besides, kale loves a good frost!

Growing up in northern BC we didn’t have a garden, I actually didn’t think anything would grow in such a short season. Watching your videos over the last year has inspired me to grow my own (tiny) raised garden in Saskatoon. I’ve always considered myself a brown thumb, but I’ve managed to harvest quite a few different vegetables this year. Thank you for making these videos and teaching me that anyone can dabble in growing. Love your channel!
Hi, what percentage of your food do you think you are growing / hunting / fishing yourselves? I use an elastic band to seal the jar rather than the clip, I find it will self burp. It takes a bit of trial and error to get the right tension on the elastic band.

Hey guys. Just wanted to let you know a technique for harvesting your roe from the membrane. Use something that has a grid formation that is big enough for the roe to pass through. Chicken wire is great way to get it off. Place the chicken wire over a bowl of water. Rake your membranes across the grate, and the eggs will fall into the water. You will lose some eggs, but you lose some with the knife anyways, however it will be far easier using the chicken wire than the knife. Hope this helps.

I think your channel has become one of my high end favorite channels. I love what you do, the sustainable way you live your life and how you take care of everything to feed you and the animals. It is a calm place to visit and learn bunch of stuff. I have no experience of gardening, but this is the second summer i have tried to grow my own food in small patches in my garden. Leeks, onions, beans, sugar snaps, beetroots, carrots, potatoes, tomatoes, bell peppers, chilli fruits, different kind of lettuce, strawberries, rubarbs, herbs and edible flowers. I am doing ok, and now i am learning how to preserve it all. Canning is a new thing for me, and i take great pleasure in watching what you guys do. Living in northern Sweden, we have the same kind of climate, summer is short, and everything has to grow fast to be able to harvest. Therefore your channel is giving me a whole lot and i learn alot in the process. I want to thank you guys for that. Something you should try, if not already done it, is to make chips out of Tuscan kale (if that is the right name). I believe i saw it in your garden. Hack it up, put vegetable oil on it, some salt and put them in the oven for like 7 minutes. They are delicious, and makes a great treat if wanting something else than potato chips! The taste is really coming out and it is crunchy and so good! You guys should make a cookbook. I would by it for shure! Thank you for sharing. :)

Fish pickle with lots of onions and curry spices.
It's an Easter favourite here in my home town. Really, really good. You can do the onion curry pickle on it's own without the fish too, and it goes really well with almost anything.
Maybe something more exotic for you two to try.

I love how capable you are without using gadgets and heavy machinery. My only advice as life changes is continue to take care of each other, even when it’s difficult. After 15 years and 3 kids it is still the best advice I have heard yet. ❤️❤️❤️

I have been canning this week as well. I canned apple pie filling, succotash, stewed tomatoes, and tomatoes juice. I blanched and frozen zucchini and squash. I sliced and frozen onions and green peppers. I was gifted some more apples, onions, zucchini, and green pepper as well as a few sweet potatoes. I purchased some peaches. I have some more work to do. Love you all. Keep working hard and trusting God.

Years back I worked for Icicle Seafoods in Petersburg, AK. I did a week in the Egg room. We rubbed the eggs on a screen then.
The eggs (chum) would go through the screen and the 'skein' would be left over.
However. The Sockeye eggs was packed as they were into small tub's, like butter comes in, with lots of salt.
Next time. Try frying the Sockeye eggs with the skein still on, in some bacon fat. Yummy!
Go to your local Goldl Mining Supply Company or online and buy different sizes of screen and a pair of cotton gloves.
1. Rub your eggs (King, Sockeye, Coho, Chum, Pink).
2. Soak 2 minutes and rinse as you like.
3. Lay brined eggs on that Large Window Screen for 24 hours in cool dark area.
4. You now have Caviar! Jar up. Yum yum!
For Sockeye. I would not rub them. I'd pan fry them only, or, I'd would salt brine them whole and jar.
Snack time:
Crispy fried egg sandwich with Sockeye Caviar. Yum!

Hey guys, fermented cauliflower, beets and carrots are one of my favorite! I use horseradish, garlic, dried seaded dill....and any other spices you might like.
It's 2 years later, I live in South East Texas so not even similar climate, I have a large family, and not near as much time as I'd like to fish and hunt. Yet I still love your videos😂 even though I live much differently I love your tips! They are simple and very well explained which is much appreciated when I can understand it over screeching young children. Also applaud yall on your team work in the kitchen, when I am canning I need everyone OUT of my kitchen😅 probably need to work on that.

Finally catching up with your channel. We want to cry whenever we see your garden videos. Our summer literally just started 2 weeks ago in our valley hole. Haha! It's really frustrating. Our corn, cabbage, squash, and tomatoes are coming along but if summer ends early we're hosed. Great to see you guys stocking up on food stores from the garden. The Keefer cheese and caviar looked scrumptious.
I really like how they are champions of not wasting barely anything. Even though meat that has been used for stock has no taste

If you throw the veggies into some ice water, called shocking, after you blanch them they will stop cooking and stay nice and bright green for freezing.

Beautiful seeing the bees pollinate. Bee population is down here in northern Illinois. Had a bunch all the time up until three years ago, this past year it was minimal.
Maybe next season they come back in droves.

You two are killing it for food storage. Save some of that herb white wine vinegar for your mustard. Vinegars make all the difference. Chicken feet also make all the difference in your stock. They are the bomb for adding collagen to each jar and dehydrate them for dog treats!

Tip for extracting the eggs from the roe: Use a piece of 1/2 inch screen placed over a bowl. Simply gently rub the roe in a circular motion over the screen and the eggs come right out. I learned this from an old man up in Mesick, MI where we go salmon and steelhead fishing in the Manistee river. We use most of our egg harvest for making spawn sacs for bait. But we do also make a good deal of caviar also. I have a feeling that if you try this method you'll be more apt to make caviar again.

Next year, you could try waiting for first snow to harvest the kale. Then when you blanch it, you can throw it onto the snow to flash cool it. This will help it stay greener and have more life! Besides, kale loves a good frost!

Growing up in northern BC we didn’t have a garden, I actually didn’t think anything would grow in such a short season. Watching your videos over the last year has inspired me to grow my own (tiny) raised garden in Saskatoon. I’ve always considered myself a brown thumb, but I’ve managed to harvest quite a few different vegetables this year. Thank you for making these videos and teaching me that anyone can dabble in growing. Love your channel!

Hi, what percentage of your food do you think you are growing / hunting / fishing yourselves?
I use an elastic band to seal the jar rather than the clip, I find it will self burp. It takes a bit of trial and error to get the right tension on the elastic band.

Hey guys. Just wanted to let you know a technique for harvesting your roe from the membrane. Use something that has a grid formation that is big enough for the roe to pass through. Chicken wire is great way to get it off. Place the chicken wire over a bowl of water. Rake your membranes across the grate, and the eggs will fall into the water. You will lose some eggs, but you lose some with the knife anyways, however it will be far easier using the chicken wire than the knife. Hope this helps.
