To give a bit of context why I addressed MatPat's interpretation specifically:
I suggested my idea not too long ago in another video. Unfortunately most of the comments were made up with people reciting The Media Theory, or just telling me to watch The Film Theorists video because they solved it. They never told me what was wrong with my idea so this lead me to believe there were some biases towards the older theory.
So with this upload I was basically trying to say "don't just discredit a new interpretation straight away. Take all theories (including my own) with a grain of salt." Because at the end of the day, all theories are flawed. There isn't one that's 100% true.
Thank you to everyone who has either tackled my theory by either adding to it, merging it with other theories or just pointing out the problems you think could be improved on. This is more or less the comment section I wanted to see on my older video. A place where people are actually discussing several different ideas and not just overlooking them.
I wish MatPat all this best with his future interpretations of the show too! This was not an attack. This was my attempt at trying to reopen a discussion.
    Thank you!

During episode 6 when it gives us our first glimpse of “Red Guy” we see him asleep at his computer. He wakes up to his boss “Red Guy” handing him a file. My theory is that the “Red Guy” asleep at his desk is not the original Red Guy we have been following throughout episodes 1-4. The original “Red Guy” that we have been following is his boss, the one with the very noticeable name tag that says his name is Red Guy.
As we know Becky and Joe are very precise with their details and they add major information into singular frames of this series. For them to focus on their camera on his boss with the name tag reading “Red Guy” is not an accident and is instead their way of telling us that we are about to learn from a new character. Here’s where it gets kind of confusing, basically the original red guy who is now the boss lived through episode 1 - 4 and when we see him leave the phone booth at the end it his him starting his new job. We know that he has learned new information through these teachers and can succeed in a society that is straight minded. Red Guy now being able to conform to society succeeds in his job and soon becomes part of upper management. When Red Guy hands the new “Red Guy” the file it is the screenplay of DHMIS 1- 6 with a few differences like the colors and the days, nothing major. Basically I think that that Old Red Guy (ORG), sees that New Red Guy (NRG) is struggling work, and instead of firing him he gives him the idea to create a series that mimics the original DHMIS but this time with more episodes and teachers, sort of like a UK office to the US office, Same plot same characters, different actors, more seasons. This would allow NRG to have a successful life and use his creativity efficiently. This would explain how he knows the original DHMIS song and how to meet ROY. When NRG gets boo’d off the stage he jumps to ROYS production center where they shoot the scenes for DHMIS and NRG is seen pushing a buttons to get glimpses of the teachers that they’ve had so far. He doesn’t seem scared for the safety of yellow guy at all which helps back my point of saying that this Red Guy is a new one. If he knew who he was he would attempt to help him and not stare at the teachers and see all of his old ones and not recognize them either even though they also tortured him. This Red Guy HAS to be new. He only seems concerned once the torture gets REALLY bad. BUTTTTT this is also when Roy comes. And not only does he come, the music playing is sorta heavily as he reaches out to touch NRG. When he does touch NRG it changes drastically to kinda spooky oh no tension music but and you see NRG jump back confused as to what he wants. But he still goes to plug and pulls it on the OLD show. Now it cuts to a new one where the characters are newer and more appealing to a childs mind. Now here’s where I think it ties in to ORG story and the beginning of the new series.
Old Red Guy works as a manager to boring everyday people, he knows about his old life and reminisces about his friends, He see’s Duck Guy as a successful politician and Yellow guy as a successful Child actor and he wonders if business was the right move for him, he gets depressed and decides he doesn’t want to work their anymore and quits his job to live with his friends just like how things were on TV. His friends suffering similar fates specializing in different fields where Duck Guy turned into some type of corrupt politician (Trump) and is now a greedy duck who wants to commercialize their town and screw over his people, and Yellow Guy following the Child actor role except now he is older and is experiencing a growing period where he grows away from what he was taught as a child and now wants to make an actual difference. He see’s Duck Guys corruption and wants to fix it. The old Town leader neglectful of Punk Yellow Guy sets off to find successful and level headed Red guy. Red Guy sees the corruption and attempts/does fix it and they begin their adventures. This time to unlearn what they were taught during the first 6 episodes of DHMIS.

someone said some of the lessons being taught are terrors about growing up
    which all makes sense:
Creativity - feeling your losing your creative touch and becoming boring
time - time is flying and your running out
love - you have to find love
internet - the internet is growing and you cant keep up with it
nutrition - feeling like its impossible to stay healthy
dreams/waking up - not wanting to wake up to reality and just wanting to stay in a fantasy forever
and the reason everything goes all wrong and disturbing is because you cant escape the terrors of real life, even when your living the dream.

The date changing to the 20th and the characters changing colour might not indicate a different person. It could be that the show is saying that growing up doesn't mean you have to give up on your imagination, just that you can't expect it to be the same as when you were a child.

Here's the thing though, the theme being addressed here *is*, in fact, very deep. There are so many children (and adults) out there who have a fear of growing up. Heck, I'm one of those people. If this theory turns out to be true, or even if it doesn't, I love it. I've developed so many unhealthy coping mechanisms because of this fear, the main one being maladaptive daydreaming. This is a beautiful theory, and I really wish this topic was brought up more.

Here's a little addition to the theory: Notice how in almost all the episodes, the teachers are teaching about abstract things. Creativity, Time, Love, Health, Dreams, they're all abstract. However, all of the teachers demonstrate these abstract ideas as concrete ideas. In Episode 1, the notepad teaches creativity as something that can be right or wrong, and is then concrete. In Episode 2, the clock literally says, "Time is a tool you can put on the wall, or wear it on your wrist," once again phrasing it like a physical object, although time is abstract. In Episode 3, the reoccurring line, "Love is a place," definitely plays into the perversion of abstract things. In Episode 4, while the internet is a real physical thing, the computer shows the internet as a place that you can physically go to. In Episode 5, health is shown physically as the different food and organs interacting with each other inside the body. Finally, in Episode 6, the lamp teaches that dreams are real physical things. Later, when the episode cuts to reality, dreams are shown as what they actually are, things in your head that are not concrete, but abstract. This once again shows the very distinct difference between Red Guy's imagination and reality.

I think it's worth pointing out that every theme after Episode 1 have a sort of a gloomy undertone. Your time running out, Finding "true" love, Technology growing faster and faster, and finally Healthy nutrition (which seems to be absolutely impossible to achieve). These are all deep-rooted anxieties that come with the realization we're all going to die someday; something that a child does not want to acknowledge. Becoming an adult is thus very boring, and frightening.
Also the track that plays when Red wakes up in the office is titled "Goodbye". Pretty telling.

Bright Mornings Actually I think the ending IS positive. I think it suggests two things:
      1. Red guys dream DID come true. He made the dreams he had a reality (albeit slightly different). Its a legitimate children’s show, but done somewhat ameuterish.
      2. Dreams in children are born again, and the process repeats itself. Its not a BAD thing. Its natural, and we should come to expect it.
And i know i said two but it might be a combination of both, you’ll have to give up those childish dreams you have and be an adult. But one day, when you can, those dreams you had as child will come true.

I was really with you until the end there. I think the restart of the show, with everyone in their favourite colours, symbolises a balance between having to grow up and be responsible but also holding on to your childhood comforts. The creators wanted to use elements such as puppets and imaginary characters and even drew inspiration from children shows they seem to enjoy. This shows they themselves are in touch with their inner child and maybe they are trying to portray that in the end. The red guy finally realises that you don't always have to choose between growing up and being happy. Just my thoughts.

The title "Don't Hug Me I'm Scared" I think is how we feel at that point where we have to grow up. We realize all these anxieties and pressures to grow up. We are scared. And sometimes we want to get away from it all. The whole series was released within 8 years. Perhaps this is where the “Don’t Hug Me. I’m Scared.” name comes from. While hugging is meant to show affection, it can also be used in celebratory ways such as the way a catcher and pitcher hug each other after winning the MLB World Series. During Red Guy’s birthday it would be most likely that relatives of his would want to hug him but since Red Guy is scared to grow up, he doesn’t want to be hugged. Therefore, Red Guy is saying don’t hug me, I’m scared to grow up.

He doesnt want to be reminded that he's growing up, and he definitely doesnt want to be praised for becoming an adult because he's scared of growing up and becoming boring.

    • @ShoulderMonster
      @ShoulderMonster 4 года назад +37

@@clearwaterivory9627 You can also interpret it as, if Roy is the adult in Red Guy, then Yellow Guy is the child in him.
Red Guy is actively avoiding adulthood (Roy) and would rather just be a kid again (so he hangs out with Yellow Guy). Roy is that constant reminder that Red Guy needs to grow up. Red Guy might see it as his "adult-self" antagonizing his "child-self" to grow up.

I've not watched DHMIS, but I can very much relate to the themes presented on this theory.
I can remember as a child hating the New Year because it always reminded me that time was going by, that I was growing older, and that I was closer to growing up. There is something terrifying to a child about responsibility, towards others and especially yourself, that comes as part of becoming an adult.
Having my own child now, it's a very difficult process of allowing your child to be free and whimsical while also teaching them about responsibility; you can't help but feel you're robbing them of their innocence even though you know you're teaching them valuable life lessons.
Yet the desire to remain a child, to be "free", becomes a sort of prison in itself. You no longer explore and grow, the things that gave you joy and pleasure as a child no longer do so. And so you're stuck doing things that once gave you joy and happiness but don't anymore in the vain hope that you'll find that sense of childhood once more.
The ending seems to me a liberation from that self-imposed prison, a realization that while you grow and develop new responsibilities, the simple joys of life don't disappear, they merely take on new forms that can be enjoyed. The child inside never truly goes away but rather adopts new tastes.

I think there's a bit more to the ending. The notebook looks silly, everything is toned down, and everyone's colour is different. Now that Red guy has accepted he's grown up, things don't have to be so complicated. He can bring it back to the basics, and see that creativity doesn't die when you grow up. His characters in his mind will still be there, but he doesn't need to let his subconscious leak through that he feels he's running away.

I think maybe because he's let go, the characters are peacefully "living" in his memories. The day could pass because red guy moved on with his life. Maybe he's started to forget how he used to imagine them. And all the fucked up weird shit was just darker adult thoughts being brought into his imagination as he grows.
And then at the end, he remembers only the good, not the bad fucked up stuff from the earlier episodes, meaning he's moved on properly.

It's the first "Don't Hug Me..." interpretation I've seen that sounds even half-right. I've been kind of thinking of the series as a sort of "The Prisoner" (1967-1968) for the Millennial generation, and I don't think these interpretations are very far out of line with each other (spoiler: in "The Prisoner", the title character was only being held prisoner by himself, in a show that spawned some pretty elaborate conspiracy theory interpretations over the years; in "Don't Hug Me, I'm Scared" the Red Guy only seems to be getting held back and discouraged and kept immature and unsuccessful by himself, in another series that has spawned some wild interpretations over the years....)

      That's because it's a good theory.
In my definition, a good theory is one which makes more logical sense than the last and does not contain any logical flaws. And this next part isn't necessary but a theory could also deepen the meaning or change the view of the subject into a much better angle of perspective. It basically makes the series better if you start looking at Roy as a savior and not as a corporation.
It kinda makes sense how Roy isn't handsome and well-clothed now because if he was the face of the media wouldn't he have looked better?
And I especially love the fact that "it all loops back to the beginning" and how "he passes on his view to the next generation" which means that he has matured and raises his own children.
And now the ending makes so much more sense than "restart with a different budget" and why "the characters are back to their original colours".
And June 19 as father's day hits much closer to home than the birth of a media.

Don't get me wrong, I can totally see the idea of the show partially being about Red Guy's initial refusal to accept that he's getting older and that Roy is actually just the physical manifestation of the fears that most people have about adulthood. I do agree that Roy was most likely not evil in the way most people expect that he was and I could agree that at most, it seemed as though Roy was just trying to tell Red Guy that it was time to let go. But the whole idea that everything was all in Red Guy's head is honestly kind of a predictable conclusion. The reason as to why I tend to dislike these forms of theories is because they can be hard to disprove. Given the absurdity of the DHMIS videos, the idea that it was all a dream is not that hard to believe.
I will say that your interpretation is certainly more original as you provide actual evidence to support your theory such as pointing out the inconsistencies in MatPat's suggestions on what the show actually means. Nothing against MatPat himself as I don't personally know the guy, but his videos practically are gospel to his viewers, and because of that, that would lead anyone with any potential ideas about how they view the show to be shut down because if one well-known RUclipsr said that he believed this was what the videos represent, then he couldn't be wrong.

Are you assuming that I didn't watch the majority of the video? Because if you are, you're kind of dumb to think that since I said the premise of the theory was that Red Guy doesn't want to become older with June 19th being more of a metaphor for him getting older. Roy is the physical manifestation of his fear of adulthood which is why he is villainized. The other characters are actually his imaginary friends given how he has a hand puppet resembling Duck Guy he's performing with, etc. I get the whole gist of the theory. All I'm saying is that to say that everything is all in his head is a pretty predictable conclusion you can come to since those kinds of theories are hard to disprove. But I also said that Inside a Mind gave some valid points that reached this conclusion rather than saying something generic such as "Red Guy was smoking on some shrooms and saw some scary shit."

Okay this is what I think
When the Red Guy's birthday came, he didn't want to grow up so he ran off to this imaginary world. But even there, Roy, the person that represents growing up is still there.
Roy reaches out and tries to hug him, and in this theory Roy is wants him to let go of his childhood and pull the plug to grow up, but he doesn't wanna get comforted or "hugged" by Roy bcs he's scared of reality and growing up.
Red Guy wakes up in his office with all the boring adults. And he still doesn't like reality.
He tries to get the other adults to agree with him by singing the creative song, but they see it as stupid and childish. He hallucinates Roy there, again a sign that he should grow up and tries to run away from him.
So he tries to go back to his imaginary world where he ran off to in the first place but it all goes wrong.
This time, Roy reaches out to comfort him again, instead of hugging him because he knows he's scared of it. But instead of running and trying to go back to his childhood like he did before, he accepts that it's time to let go and pulls the plug.

I mean, this kind of doesn't hold much weight since the title was made before the creators even thought about giving DHMIS a broader narrative. They said the first episode was literally only about the concept behind teaching creativity. The title could just allude to how one might feel after watching an episode, especially if it's a child expecting to see a kid's show.

It can also be when you're holding back emotion, being hugged often helps people to cry if they're holding back, so if you were trying to hold onto a feeling or emotion and didn't want to let go you may not want to be hugged there either.

I think I have a good piece of information here that I found from someone in the DHMIS comment section:
    The first episode is breakfast,
The second episode looks to be sometime between breakfast and lunch,
The third episode is a lunchtime picnic in the afternoon,
The fourth episode is them playing a board game (in the beginning) which was probably in the afternoon,
The fifth episode is at dinner,
And finally, the last episode is at night. That is why it's all the same day, June 19th. And that's why the trailer is "Wakey Wakey". It's waking the characters up for the next day.
Edit from March 9: ok, so a few people have said that I stole this and I said that this isn’t mine, which is true, it’s from a guy on the DHMIS comment section. The guy just had a really good theory and I wanted to share it here. Thanks.

My theory is that this is the mind of someone that is trying to cope with something, and they created a perfect world for themselves. Their daydream world is tainted by what they have gone through, and they try to ignore what they went through by focusing on everyday subjects, like something to keep their mind placated. I feel like the different characters might be different people they admire, or people they know. Maybe even different parts of their personality. As the story progresses, they realize that the daydream world is interfering with their actual life, and they need to let it go, because at this point it is spiraling and takes up part of their life.

I think it's something to do with how the whimsy and naivete of childhood concepts become nightmarish when we try to use them to construct our adult realities. In every episode the turning point happens when the child explores the concept (creativity, dreams, time, etc) and finds that the simplistic definitions they're being fed aren't adequate to deal with the nuances of real life.
As we transition into adulthood we're forced to discard a lot of the beliefs we held as children because otherwise we risk becoming the kinds of authoritarian figures we see in the series, who won't allow the child to question the rigid dogma they're trying to indoctrinate them with.

This theory actually makes a ton of sense and filled alot of gaps i had with the original couple of theories. I feel like this theory and the dream theory run hand in hand. Red guy was using his dreams and imagination to escape the life he was living, but now that isnt working for him because his views are starting to or have undergone a massive change in some way and mature with him.he knows things are out of place and is the only one who actually voices that and decides to leave that world behind and try to cope with things in a new way. He could possibly be teaching his child or a niece or nephew to cope with things the same way he had when he was younger because to him it was comforting, and it might be to the child as well using things that would be familiar to any kid. Its just a thought i started coming across while i was watching but it makes things seem more complete even if the dream theory is usually a cop out. Things arent always pleasant in dreams and can get pretty obscure and thats what the episodes felt like to me.

Maybe I just like darker themes in shows but I feel like the duck and the yellow guy might represent childhood friends of red guy - and something bad happened to them, hence why all the gorey stuff is occurring. Maybe red guy is trying to cope with the loss of his friends by relieving their childhoods in memory - but the horrific stuff happens because of course, he can't help but remember what happened.
This could also explain Roy's appearances - if we're going by the assumption that he is indeed yellow guys father. Perhaps yellow guy died/disappeared and Roy is obviously distraught by this - sometimes showing up in red guys hallucinations and fantasies since red guy might feel guilty about not being able to stop yellow guy from being hurt?

I thought that episode 5 is the first time he goes back and tries to live in that world again. That’s why the singing items look so odd, and they contradict eachother. The duck starts getting confused, like this isn’t as good as it used to be, almost as if..... the red guys imagination has been broken by the trials of being an adult. Eventually the duck says “I can’t do this anymore!” And wrecks everything. I interpret this as the red guy coming to grips with the fact that his inner child has begun dying.
Episode 6 is the red guy finally admitting, or being told that, losing that inner child and ability of imagination isn’t so bad, and that their is always room for something new, hence the blue guy, and completely different looking characters and room. He may not be as good at imagining as he used to be, but he still tries.
Also.... I kind of think that Roy is an imaginative representation of red guys father. And that in his imagination world, red guy is as close to an adult as he can get because he wants to be like him. This would make it so his own father it’s telling him it’s okay to not be able to keep his old imagination skills in episode 6. And it would also explain why Roy is a backer of the show, he supported his sons imagination and creativity up until the end, then helped him cope with the loss of it.

It reminds me of when I occasionally reminisce on imaginary things I devised long ago. Not so much that adulthood has "broken" the creativity, but that recreating the past only results in an inaccurate imitation of it. By that logic, the very end could be him letting go of the past, and allowing room for his creativity to develop.

@@301klink2 You could say the "media" is how Red Guy makes sense of his own mind and dreams.
Kinda like how people imagine their emotions or thoughts as separate people in their head. Or how I imagine some of my knowledge is stored in file cabinets in my head. Many people now use computer metaphores to describe their thought processes.
So, maybe Red Guy views his imagination as a movie being filmed. Even at the end when he's in the control panel but still within a dream-like space, he's looking his imagination on from an outside perspective. You ever replay daydreams in your head, but like, occasionally stop the dream to think about a certain aspect of it or change something? I believe Red Guy was doing that, or at least trying to before retiring the daydream for good...

  • @smellylorenny

    Film Theory is QUAKING.
I think this is such a fantastic new take on this show, and your evidence to prove that this it's actual intention makes SO much sense. I'm sure the creators were imbued by their own unwillingness to grow up, it's evident in their creative style.
But with that being said, I think your last point about the final scene doesn't really connect to the intention of the show so here's my take:
I think the day changing and the characters still being in this world could actually symbolise that growing up, and putting yourself back in the present again (Red Guy going into the 'real world' finally) doesn't mean that your youth has to go away. For me it feels as though the intention is, if you are accepting of the fact that you're ageing and your childhood is in the past, it doesn't mean you have to abandon your creative side, or fun loving and childish nature. This would be an especially relevant thing for the creators to include considering the fact that they are obviously still engaging in their love for childhood relics and have a sense of fun in their creative pursuits. I gather this because I'm also a creator, and even though I'm no longer a child, I carry with me a deep respect for that time in my life and how I felt during it, and I love a lot of childish, funny and cartoony media and it inspires me a lot in my art... And so I carry that with me, even after I've grown up.
I also think that the desire to hold onto your childhood and push away from traditional societal adult roles and expectations could come from childhood trauma, and this would definitely explain the disturbing nature of the content playing out in Red Guy's head. OR it could just be the weird nature of dreams, relaying the imposing and disturbing realities of life onto an adult... These are just my add ons to your theory though (and I'm about a year too late :P)

One thing that isn’t quite explained is why both Duck and Yellow Guy in the final episodes are sick of the repetitive nature of the songs and lessons. I think this might be because both of Red Guy’s imaginary friends being sick of the show is implying that they want him to just grow up and be like a normal adult. Yellow Guy is scared of another lesson while Duck is tired of it. Duck is literally getting upset at the dreams format, meaning that he’s probably been here three longest and just wants Red Guy to grow up. Yellow Guy is scared of getting hurt even more by the dreams and also wants him to grow up.
Also, the Lamp transitions from talking about good dreams and then transitions into bad, nightmarish dreams. This could be a message that his dreams are literally going to kill him inside. Because he’s going to become so obsessed with being a kid again he isn’t gonna become an adult anymore. These friends also get really hurt during these and we can tell. Because “Dreams are movies that LIVE in your head.” He’s dreamt of these characters for so long that they’re basically living. Which is why they’re both sick of the show and these dreams.
The dreams and scenarios also probably go bad near the end because near the end of the dreams, Red Guy always suddenly realizes that he’s going to have to grow up, which messes up the dream tremendously.

I have I different interpretation on the ending (when the show "repeats itself" on June 20th). Instead of this being a new generation, I feel like it could mean you don't have to stop being imaginative or creative. You can still have your favorite color or your childhood memories. Growing up doesn't have to be scary (Omg wait I just realized: Don't hug me I'm scared. I'm scared of growing up.)

Imagine Roy as the symbol of Adulthood wanting to hug you - scary, right? I LOVE this and think you’re totally right but I have something else to add. Something that you didn’t touch up on as much is all the episodes ending badly. I think that this indicative of red guy having some trauma and symbolic of how when one tries to reminisce on good memories, they are always cut short when the person with the trauma inevitably ends up remembering the bad things that were also happening at the time. I think the ending represents him moving on and not focusing so much on his childhood, and therefore there is less detail (less furniture in the room) but happier details (everyone gets to be their favorite color), and no more bad memories.

My theory is. The show is not about anything in specific. It has the meaning you give it. There might be hints of a deeper meaning, but they are there to instigate you, to make you think. And some are most likely an accident. Example: at the end of the first ep, the puppets all grow up to represent a passage of time, right? Well...I never believed that. I think they simply changed from puppets to actors in costume because the puppets couldn't dance. That's why red guy remained unchanged.

I do believe your theory for the most part, but there is one thing i'd like to change. I believe that at the end the blue "red" guy was red guys son, based on the father's day references, how his son was his favorite color, and how it would make sense about his son going through the same issues. Maybe that might be why Roy's still there, to teach the lesson to the red guy's family's generations on how you can run away from growing up, maybe they all face the same issues. That's just my theory though.
