Operons are regulating circuits in prokaryotes. Operon is basic unit of gene expression regulation in prokaryotes. Operon concept was given by Jacob and Monod in 1961. The structure of operon consists of structural genes and regulating elements. The cis acting elements and trans acting products are fundamental to operons.
