Alright so I never actually played this game so whenever I heard someone say "Yeah my favorite Person 2 character was Hitler" I always thought there was just coincidentally some character that looked like Hitler. Oh, how gloriously wrong I was...
To be fair, they try to disguise it in remakes and rereleases. The English version put a pair of shades on him and called him Führer, and the Japanese started using these same changes after their rating system was established in 2002, meaning they couldn't used an uncensored Hitler anymore.

Its because there's some sort of law in Japan prohibiting the portrayal of real people in video games. It didn't exist when IS was first released.

But remember for the US it isn't the first time we had Hitler in a video game. Wolfenstien was one of them. The only country to have a really big deal about it would be Germany.

I love how the protagonists aren't the least bit surprised about the fact that they are fighting Adolf Hitler. I mean, the phallus chariot is one thing, but fighting a long dead and notorious dictator who possesses monsters is in its own league altogether.

So over the top, looks like something from Salon Kitty or another old exploitation flick.
BTW, this is probably one of my favorite boss themes for any Persona game. It's definitely up there with Master of Shadow from Persona 3 and I'll Face Myself from Persona 4.

I'd like to see a re-port of the original uncensored version. After all we have homosexuality already a-ok in most RPG choice making games such as Mass Effect. Its kind of odd that such censorship was made by Japan (possibly) prior to the events of international release.

Thanks I thought all of Amnesia's monsters were invisible or hallucinatory.. But I guess I was wrong. Definitely have to play that game soon!
***** Its only the water monster that is "invisible" because it was stuck between two dimensions and therefore is invisible. The grunt (as pictured) and the brute (the monster with the long blade attached) are experiments that gone just incredible wrong. Think of evil scientist Frankenstein-type we are dealing with. The DLC Justine had what are known as the "suitors" whom are the only monsters in Amensia to actually talk in full sentences. The brute sounds like a moose/cow (as Markiplier noted as "Moose-man" and the Grunt only knows a limit amount of dialogue such as "who's there" or something like that. I have to remember the actual canon story of Amnesia and not get the "custom story" and "fan story" get in my brain-cells but I think the monsters are like that because of the "orbs" that were collected. Sort of like in Dead Space where the Marker made all the monsters.

Persona 2 follows a line of Greco Roman influence and Hitler is "said" to have taken influences of the Roman Empire. And it's a fact Hitler was fascinated with religious artifacts, the guy was searching for the Holy Grail and the Spear of Longinus, Longinus being Roman as well.
I hope to god the Persona 2 remake rumors are true. I need to see what they do with this.

I think censorship is idiotic. Think about this. You know the pretty new Wolfenstein The New Order? Hear that Germany is going to accept the game? Kind of. They are making the game have absolutely NO Nazi-related things in it. IN A WOLFENSTEIN TITLE! That is pretty pointless. Might as well try that with Call of Duty except no "soldiers" or anything to do with the military. One of the key moments that censorship is stupid. People will make it an issue even WHEN its censored. So why have it? You don't like the stuff that is in a game, don't play or buy it. Pretty simple.
Worst part about that is that usually all the Hakenkreuze are censored by replacing them with Iron Cross, which taints the symbolism of the Iron Cross as it was an actual award in the army before Hitler came to power and it is used in modern day Germany.

I am from germany and I know the answer. It is quite simple. There was never any court case about wether videogames are art or not. Movies on the other hand have been declared art via courts decades ago. IF there someday will be a court process over the status of videogames they most likely will be declared art.

In Japan they have a law there that prohibits any form of media to portray real life people or existing media (places, songs etc.) to their materials unless a permission was granted, this is the reason with the silly localized names of the stands and characters in Jojo anime and the likes. The law also applies to real life Japanese people, unless they get permission to the said person/entity, an anime, manga or videogame cannot use the existing person blatantly slapped into their material. I believe this copyright-censorship hybrid of a law was just put on effect during the late 80's?

Persona 1 and both 2s were more of a wager between the christian saint (servant of God) Phillemon and the Cthulhu mythos god Nyarlathotep, yes.
The game was, basically, humanity's good vs humanity's incline to nihilism, both choosing someone(s) to wield their power. In Persona 1 Phillemon chose the kids who tried to summon him and Nyarlathotep (Massacre, no joke that was their name in the 96 version for the US) chose Kandori (Guido).
For IS Nyarlathotep chose Hitler (he was alive because in IS and I believe EP rumors are real) and Phillemon the party of Tatsuya, Maya and their friends.
For P3 onwards though Nyarlathotep is no longer around (EP spoilers) but the games hint at Phillemon vía the velvet room residents and the butterfly, so he is still fighting nihilism and/or any of the other human aspects other gods take advantage of (Nyx the desire of death, Izanami nihilism again iirc and Yaldabaoth the surrender of thought).

persona 2 the only no bad or good ending game in the persona series?
I kept a save state before Hitler, and ha've defeated him about ten times (no saving during the boss fight), but each time I showed him to my friends and he was on low HP he did the combo of Holy Grail & 2x Vril Blitz in a row - simply couldn't take the beating without Me-Diarahan (and Recarm-Dora had a bug). But twice I've had Hitler killing himself off when attacking with Holy Lance at Michelle with Maha Kala.

In this game, there's this thing making rumors that are spread enough come alive. Someone spreads the rumor that a revived Hitler with demonic powers is reviving the Nazis, and before long guess what happens.
A persona 2 fan once said *and I quote* :"One of the Most Well Written Games Of All Time. I consider this a different franchise than Persona because the other Personas besides 2 are just Teenage Empowerment Fantasy."
I mean they're not wrong. Hitler being in the game is because of the game's theme of "daddy issues," during the reign of the third reich Germany was referred to as "Vaderland," which means Fatherland. Also because Nyarlathotep is a crafty individual and some people have thought of the idea that Nyarlathotep could've actually been Hitler in the Lovecraft mythos. Although Persona 1 and 2 are definitely still part of the Persona series ngl, even though they're very different from its successors.

P2 innocent sin everyone looses and feels powerless by the end.
P2 eternal punishment have mostly an adult cast dealing with very adult things like being used by men(Ulala), having to abandon your dreams because of family(Katsuya), dealing with remorse and grief(Baofu).
It was tackled in a very nice way.
All characters were developed naturally without the need for a social link system.
Anyway,that Longinus attack was annoying as hell, dunno at the time if there's any persona that can negate it but this made this boss fight a lot harder than last boss for me.
