I know I'm late to this discussion, but I would just like to add that Meruem only lived 40 days and didn't bother to learn anything about Nen at all , as his interests solely was about learning, as in reading books (during his first introduction) and then playing strategy games like chess and shogi and the fictional game of Gungi. In HXH IQ and strategy (aka as battle iq) is a huge factor. If Komugi did not exist Meruem would have just moved on to learning all about nen and kept seeking and devouring nen users , thus making shiapouf right about Komugi being a threat to Meruem. Imagine if Komugi died before meeting Meruem.. it would end HXH then and there as he would most likely eat and synthesize any and all nen users within his range as Meruem is the complete Nen user package with physical speed, endurance, durability, IQ and his natural predilection towards strategy and predatory instincts is all part of his dna. In the end shiapouf was right.. Meruem wasn't defeated by Netero and the rose bomb, he was defeated by Komugi.. the only person he cannot use violence and strength and strategy against to win.. and the only being he cared about.
There’s something so special and poetic about seeing all of the potential for characters just get wiped out because of a war, really fantastic writing honestly

The threats of the dark continent are categorized as more dangerous than Meruem because it take more effort to eradicate them than Meruem (you can't rose bomb everything). Here are the categories. Most probably there can be creatures stronger than him the question is if the humanity will met them, the dark continent is enormous so there is always a chance that there are such being, now that humans met them is other thing. If Meruem decided go to the dark continent I believe that he would have high chances of survival
The literal only way Meruem leaves alive is if Netero decides to talk with Meruem as Meruem proposed. He isn't fast enough to escape. Also Meruem isn't even close to the strongest in hxh. Half of the royal family stomp him.
