Blue period may not be for artists… but made me return to art school after leaving it bc of depression. I have never felt so listened and understood as I was while reading it. I felt like it genuinely answered so many questions I had about myself and my own future, I feel like if you’re an artist and you’re feeling lost, you should definetely check it out.

A quote from the anime (I'm not sure if it's in the manga) that sticks with me follows along the lines of, "I may be doing what I love, but that doesn't mean it's *fun* all the time." The show summed up one of my personal pet peeves that I experience. From the outside looking in, people always tell me how much fun it must be for me, an artist pursuing art, and I shrivel up a little on the inside every time. I love Blue Period so much for painstakingly showing the mental process of a budding artist as they grow into their medium.

After complaining to a coworker that I don't like people coming in and looking at the work I make and calling it fun after all it's a job, to less than a minute or 2 later someone walks in sees me painting and all they could comment is oh wow this is so fun. I assure you having to waste my gas coming in to draw the same thing over and over again just to be consumed is not fun. Especially if I'm drawing on demand what will sell over anything that I personally would buy

Most artists I know (myself included) prefer to be called skilled and for you to say specifically what part you liked ("Wow, your mastery of proportions is amazing!" "How are you so good at colors? Teach me!" These were the kinds of dialogues you could hear in my art class or among my art peers). The only talent we have is our desire to want to improve in art

    • @Moonmoon-ws6jo
      @Moonmoon-ws6jo 2 года назад +69

Being called skilled, feels a lot more appropriate when it comes to art. Practicing relentlessly to improve in areas you know struggle in, just like how you need practice to be skillful in Math, it doesn’t come as naturally as everyone think it is.

That's how I prefer to compliment artists too. I always point out exactly what captivates me in that one specific peace of art of their general style they draw or paint in.
It's just more helpful in my opinion than keeping it completely generic.
That's also how I give constructive criticism if asked, I try to pinpoint what my issue may be as much as possible so the person can actually work on it.

    • @ttwiligh7

That's not the reality I see. I'm doing abstract sculpture and feel like talent is everything. Talent is the foundation of the architect you start building through your life, coming in all shapes and sizes, determined by your DNA. You can learn how to build walls and pillars, but space and materials for it are already decided at the moment you are born. That could be called creativity, imagination and inspiration in art field.
Now the manga is partly lying and misleading. Yatora decides that Yotasuke is a genius just by looking at his still life drawing. While he could really be a genius, there are many people who are very good at still life drawing, amazingly fast and accurate, but incapable of producing significant artworks due to the lack of imagination. That can't be overcome by practicing. Because the creativity itself can't be taught.
Back to manga, Yatora tries to fill the gap between him and a genius just by sheer effort. But again, that's totally impossible almost in every field. If he was really mediocre, he can only become a mediocre artist. You can't built a skyscraper or enormous cathedral with the single house foundation.
So I assume Yatora is very talented, just not in so obvious way yet, to make story interesting.
I'm good at sculpting, but there are always things I can't accomplish, or even improve, no matter how hard I try. For instance, I gave up composing music. I had a little talent, maybe better than average, and that's it. You passion and hard work won't always pay off.
I'm writing this partly because so many students are pouring efforts for something they are not born for. However, I must add that learning music was so much fun that I have no regret. So I guess you have to know yourself and balance out the reality and dream to make your life happy.

Saying someone has Talent, isn't an insult. You're understanding of that word makes you feel insulted, but you're not listening to what they mean.
When someone says you have Talent, they aren't saying you haven't worked hard at something, completely the opposite, that's something you make up in your head. Sometimes out of pride and sometimes out of being self-conscious. They're saying what they can, because most people honestly don't understand their own fascination or the words to use but are genuinely impressed that you are capable of doing something they could never accomplish because your brain processes the required skills and movement in a unique creative way that theirs could never do. Not everyone's brain can, they simply don't possess that ability and it's actually, imo, more insulting that you turn their enamored remark of praise and curiosity as a mere petty insult.
I've dedicated my life to art. all my short 24 years I've been trying to become proficient in every type of art and medium that I can, from writing to music, from drawing to sculpting and I've been touched very dearly every time I've been told I have a talent in anything, and I've been told that by much greater musicians and painters than I'll ever be, who do understand the work that goes into creating a piece of art. It's deeper than it sounds and it really disappoints me because I expect better of artists when it comes to understanding the nuances of the human soul.

    • @w_moonshines
      @w_moonshines Год назад

@@MichiruYami I understand that 'talent' is often used as a compliment and that those saying it means well. I wouldn't really feel offended by it, though it would make me wonder if those saying it understand how much hard work they have summarised in just one word.
In my experience it has been non-artists that complement my art by saying I am talented or have talent. It is probably a personal preference, but I would much rather they comment the art itself than say "you are talented".

The work put in to be able to paint things as you see them, is like an exoskeleton power suit to power up your imagination. I have a very fertile imagination, but not enough patience to put into form that others can see it. I have many worlds in my head that only I can see. For a time some of those worlds were what I regaled my pregnant with with as she was drifting off to sleep, while growing our son in her womb. When he was born, even before he could understand the words, I told him the continuation of those stories. As our family expanded, the story did too. My wife said I should write it down, but I could never do that. I think that talent, as far as art, and other creative endeavors is the imagination. Many people can sing. Some can sing so well that thousands are captivated by their voice, but they would never be able to create an opera, or write an original song. Talent might also be considered the power to work at it over and over and never being satisfied. I have caught myself wishing that I could paint like that, and then I remember that if I tried, very hard, over and over starting with the basics, I probably could have. Perhaps I will when I retire. Seems to work for Bush and Hunter Biden. Thanks for listening to a frustrated non writer, who loved telling stories to his wife and kids.

Except I fully didn’t fathom the largeness of the manga then. Reading blue period has influenced me to draw more, a lot. Except those drawings are bad, I could feel that they are a reflection of my inferiority complex and my fear. The fear of not being accepted.
The way u explained that this manga is not for artists was another point I loved in this video. Because I’m on the event horizon of a black hole, but with the ability to travel faster than light. I can go both ways, continue and improve my drawing skills, enjoy the work and improve who I am. Or find something else that showed me and helped me become my best. I am spontaneously an artist, but I’m also not. So. When u explained it, half of me was scared as hell the other half just vining to the video.

I agree. Being able to pull at the viewer's emotions and imagination is a hallmark of great art.
If I may add my two cents, though, remember that your creations will elicit different reactions from different people. Where your teacher looked in horror, someone else might look in fascination. If you enjoyed doing it, might as well give yourself the chance to keep bringing to life the things that you and only you, in your uniqueness, can make. Your art doesn't have to be understood by every (or any) viewer to be valuable. But sooner or later, I bet someone will resonate with it.

Blue Period reminds me that it's all about the process and the fun you can find doing art just for the pleasure to explore. I love that anime, I didn't draw for years and now I can't stop painting and finding new ways to do art. Art is an adventure, that's what I learned from Blue Period 💙

  • @nilladrawsstuff

I honestly really enjoyed Blue Period. It's one of the best representation of artists I've seen in modern media. There's as accurate growth as you could get when trying to tell a story (without years of time skip in between). There are so many relatable moments for me(for example, yaguchi thinking all he's good for is grades and studying in the beginning). Most non-artists don't understand how much of an insult being called "talented" can be. It chalks up all the hard work to just being born with good drawings. Every artist has pieces that they don't show anyone, pieces that they despise, pieces from years prior that aren't very good in their eyes, and saying that artist is "talented" takes away all the hard work and makes them think they're wasting their talent on the pieces they don't like. It's been truly damaging to me personally to hear that kind of thing. I always thought when I got burnt out or had art block I was losing or wasting my talent. So, if you know an artist, mention the skill, not the "talent". The only talent artists have is the want to improve and work hard at this beautiful form of expression.

I remember before i got my artstyle that i do today i would be losing motivation growing impatient and just generally pouring so much effort into experimentation and tweaking it to the way that i want it to be. It was a painful process and sometimes i wanted to give up on art all together but i got to where i am because of that painful process where i can draw what i want a lot better than before. So everytime someone says im talented it feels so watered down as though its glossing over what i tried so damn hard to achieve to something that was never there in the first place. Maybe it feels good to some people but it never sat with me, as though im being dismissed without a second thought

I think as artist, we have a (slightly malicious) impulse to use the word talented as well. If you're an older artist and you come across a younger, far superior to yourself, artist, it's tempting to say, "well, they have talent and skill, whereas I only had skill to work with."
I know I've thought that to myself more than once when seeing a 15 year old on Instagram with art that blows mine out of the water.
Or if not that, we say, "Well they had a better support system for their art. No wonder they're that good."
I think might be the human urge to make excuses for our inadequacy to preserve ego. It's only natural. I try to always take everything as a message to work even harder though in my pursuit of perfection.

I kinda had other perspective about this anime. It's the search for a poetic (I don't know what is the right word is used in other countries, but in Brazil we use this one to talk about the expression, that unique thing that the artist shows in his arts) which is something else than “work hard”. You can draw every day, paint like Da Vinci but your work would be just a copy of reality, nothing more than that. The first shock was the Ooba's first criticism of Yaguchi's drawings because she saw that he had no "soul", he was just a copyist. To me, this mangá/anime has a lot to teach to artists.

as another artist, I never really minded the work "talent" solely because I didn't know what it really meant, now that I do, I still don't mind at all, I always liked to think I was good at art ever since I was a little kid anyway, it masks the fact that my own pride has kept me blind from my relatively unimpressive drawings (at least in my eyes)
plus, most people just aren't well informed about art in general so you can't ever blame them for calling you talented nonchalantly

I started to create stories at the age of 2 years old and a half (the oldest memory I have). I started to write them at the age of 7. I decided to become a writer/scenarist at the age of 9.
As long as I can remember, I always had a very deep imagination. Of course, it evolved but it didn’t evolved into something better or anything, it just changed his style to adapt to what I liked. In primary school, I used to create stories about family and friendship issues with some supernatural touch. In middle school, it was more like horror and very gore stories putting kids in traumatizing context. In high school, I started to write more and more about adults protagonist (around 30-50 years old) living a normal life with their own issues. Now, I am writing a bit all of it.
Everyone, my friends, family, teachers, strangers etc…always told me that my imagination was infinite and complex. One day, for a joke, we ask to create a story about a random word: Chair. I was able to make a whole detailed story in less than 5 minutes about this chair. That impressed them a lot.
But I was always able to do that. Even when I was in Kindergarten. Everyone thought I have a talent and I never took it as an insult because…that was the nicest thing people ever said to me.
I am not good at writing. I never was. Neither at drawing, singing, telling, dancing, playing sports, sciences, investigating, driving, cooking, cleaning etc…I am clumsy from birth, I have a hard time to learn things, it took me more around 3 years to learn how to drive, while my sister did it in only a few month. I was never able to understand math or even French even it’s my natural language. Every time I tried to participate into something, such as a competition, I was either a loser (around the last one) or second place.
I never won anything in my life. I know I am not the only one but I always put a lot of effort into these things.
I tried a lot of time to cook…and everytime, when making pasta, I am able to mess up. I tried my best to improve my writing without success. I am currently learning to draw but I feel like I didn’t improve at all…
I was often mocked for not being able to do a single thing even if I was trying my best.
And I am not even a curious person. I lack of cultural knowledge because, even when I was a child, I wasn’t interested into anything. Books, movies, games, actualities etc…I tried to read books to improve my writing but I found them all lame and boring, with no spark in it. That quickly disgusted me to reading.
Today, I am in University but there is nothing more I like, outside of roleplay maybe. I don’t find any flame into anything but I am still trying to open myself to new experiences.
But for Imagination, I never worked for it. I never tried to improve it. I just have random ideas, without even wanting them to come. It’s like breathing. It’s instinctive since I am 2 years old. It’s not something I learned. So, that’s kinda why people call it a « talent » in my case. Because even me, I don’t know where it comes from. I didn’t make any effort to gain this big imagination.
But that is also the only thing I get compliments for. So yeah, sometimes talent isn’t an insult. At least, not for all artist. It can be a comforting word.
But the only thing I feel right now is sadness and fear. So, I don’t believe in talents. But sometimes, I remember all the people who told me that my imagination is a talent. It might not be true if talent don’t exist…but just thinking that you might be not entirely a useless and lifeless body is an amazing emotion.
    (Sorry for my bad English)

    • @Cra3ture
      @Cra3ture  2 года назад

I don't think people require talent or anything like that to create. If your imagination is sufficiently powerful, the entirety of creating a story is up to how consistent you can be. It doesn't have much to do with the abilities you may have, even the best writers can fall in an out of consistency. Same thing with painters and anyone else creative.
I think finding a fundamental balance between things is probably gonna help

after watching blue period I was inspired to go back to art.
After a long time of being discouraged and being put down and limited to even touch art- I have decided to get back to it and ignore the words of my family who is extremely critical to it. I was inspired to practice, make goals, improve, go through complications and learn something new everyday (anatomy, shading, new brushes to try out or styles and etc) .
Since then my art has gotten WAY better, and I was no longer scared to try new things- more dynamic poses, realism, backgrounds in my art (now any background is better rather than a simple gray/white empty background- even a tweaked stock photo is better than nothing!). Art is not about talnet, it is just like any other thing, a skill you develop, the more work you put into it the more better it gets- but you have to be consistent (once again, just like with anything else)
When people tell me "you're so talented" I start to get paranoid, that one day I wont do good enough for them to consider that someday.

Can't believe this wasn't recomended to me sooner! Years ago, I searched for Manga, Anime and Film hoping that to find an answer to my lack of self-esteem, especially regarding Creativity, more specifically Talent, because I felt that I lacked both creative talent, and something special that everyone else had, like a talent for life itself.
I eventually heard about "The Pet Girl of Sakurasou," a show about a mediocre student who starts living with, and eventually falls in love with an artistic genius (which actually happened to me! It went about as well as you think...) The whole show is about these different "talented" induviduals in this dorm, and how they compare themselves to others. In the end, every character collaborates on a single project, resulting in a something greater than anyone could have done alone.
This message didn't get through to me, because it directly oppossed my mindset. The MC was still worthless in my eyes despite them being the one bringing everyone together, because they lacked genius. Now, I see the meaning, but back then I felt very hopeless. Blue Period seems like exactly what I needed to see. A relatable struggle. Not some cope that "everyone is equally special." I'm still half in my past mindset, so I hope this helps me out of it.
Anyway, thanks for reading my damn novel in the comments.

I'm using word "talent" as admiration of someone's hard work and soul put into it, so, yeah, it kinda depends on how people associate and reacting on things, one artist would be glad to hear that people claiming they are talented, another one would be insulted and mad, same with people who saying this word to them, different purposes, i never had any true interest in anything at all, no hobbies, no interests, and it still like that mostly, i tried to be an artist, but completely broke now after 5 years of constant force to do something to not become a loser without any hobbies and skills, but i just can't enjoy any activity (except of games, music and anime, but this is a time-killers and it's a fun, not a work, you don't need to strain yourself physically or intellectually when you doing this) and instantly falls into depression and despair, also starting to feel a huge terrible unbearable pain in my chest and just want to stop existing in moments like these, also i've born with brain trauma, with genetic mental illness from my family and also destroyed after by inadequate environment in my family and in country in general as well, everyone around inadequate and aggressive, uncivilized, bullying and beating everyone endlessly so you're never safe here, can't be happy, can't have a friendly, supportive and progressive environment with good people, (and total lack of any good and adequate psychologists, psychotherapists and so on, our system is too old for all those things that people here just doesn't understand it at all and ruining people lives instead of helping and curing them), and now my government also closed our borderds and now no one can't leave this place (and i can be mobilizated in any moment despite the fact of my mental health terrible troubles, they wouldn't care), i am completely alone here, left on my own with my problems and all this hell, which i can't to impact on, because it doesn't depends from me, sorry i'm not to good at expressing what i'm thinking and sharing my thoughts, so, i don't know if i would be able to do and enjoy things if i were born healthy, in adequate and friendly place, with good quality of life and so on, with freedom and human rights, but not about it even, i don't know it and can't prove it since i can't move out here, and i don't know if this thing is ever possible to fix in me, because i was like that always, since i born, before all terrible surroundings affected me and destroyed my psyche, so maybe it wouldn't solve my problem even if i escaped to another place, i'm always admired by any artists and creative people, who find their passion and point in this live, they are the most wonderful and amazing people, which i can't understand sadly, never i was been able to do any things and working hard, so any my dreams just would always be a dreams, i can't do anything with myself, i can't cure myself, i can't make myself to live in healthy and safe, supportive and friendly environment, i can't even do anything by myself, without my parents i just would instantly die from my helplessness, i am 21 years old but completely helpless like a little child, so i'm using word "talent" because as i said, i'm admired by their ability to do all this hard work, day after day, this whole life, it's just unbearable for me, wish i could be that workaholic too... because without hobbies and passions i doesn't enjoying this life at all, i don't live, i'm just pointlessly existing in endless agony and despair, suffering from fact that i'm doing nothing and can't create all this beautifulness which i want to... creative people is truly incredible, i'm crying every time i see something beautiful created by those people, arts, games, music, anime and so on, that's kinda too much to just say "i'm using word "talent" to admire artists, not to devalue them or insult"... sorry, can't put my thoughts into short text

What is a race car driver that drives very well? Talented or an experienced hard worker? It's both. Same with artists. Words exist to give meaning to things, use them. I'm a decently good artist, I'd say my drawing skills are above average between other artists, I've never once felt offended because someone called me talented or gifted. Even if you are "talented" it goes without saying that you've put on the work, so let's not make it a thing to feel offended by nitpicking a well meaning compliment someone has given you.

The thing about blue period is I have to stop reading because it gives me lots of anxiety as a self-taught artist who is studying like if the protagonist is still lost after going to art school, how unsure of my path is. I really like the art but just can't read.

I love blue period because I felt understood and because of it, I kept going on with art as much as it hurts, as much as I might hate it sometimes
I don’t think it’s an insult at all
Then again, my art skills have always been called a talent and only recently did I realise that talent and skill are two completely different worlds so maybe that’s why I don’t see the point

  • @chosoistryinghisbest

i think why i liked blue period so much was that it was so raw and downright uncomfortable at times. it's so real, too real most times. pursuing art as a career has been hard since the moment people thought about capitalizing on it, which was from the very beginning. and it's still just as unreachable for most people to be artists and be paid for it. especially for traditional art, the art world is still just as unrelenting to let you in.
as sad as it is, art is something that a lot of people can't find a stable income for and for a lot of people, it kills their passion for art. and that happens so often in blue period and it's hard to watch. and while it does show the hardship of art, it also shows the love and the amount of work artist continue to put into their art. it's so beautiful. blue period is the most painful heartfelt letter to art in the best way possible.
i don't think i've ever read or watched a series that was THIS raw with art and for that it's a series i deem precious to me

Didn't read it yet, but as an "advanced" artist, I too think that talent is more or less a fictive tag that people assign to someone, when they lack an understanding of how they do such beautiful work.
However, consequences of ignorance such as that can't be an insult. This is sure reducting and misleading to put someone in the box "Talented", but it's just normal for anyone to do so in my opinion.

Someone : Must be great to be able to draw like this. I wish I have talent like you.
You : *flashback to the infinite amounts of ugly drawings you had to sit through and fix, the constant despair and discouragement, the constant struggle of not knowing if you'll make it or not, the isolation of being amongst people who don't endeavour toward anything, crying alone in your room, the slow climbing up the skill ladder, figuring piece by piece what makes you whole as an artist...*
    You : ....sure.

Talent for me is the willpower to stick to something. It's essentially an interest. You're so interested in something that you master it through hard work. The reason why not everyone's a good artist, or a good figure skater, or a good singer, or a good writer, is because they don't stick to it. Everyone can master anything if they put their mind to it. Some have probably a better point to start, and have quicker progress because their thinking kinda matches their interest. If you're a creative mind, you'll more likely to succeed as an artist. However, everyone starts at 0 skill. When I say someone is talented, I say that I respect their willpower.

Some people don't work hard and are still good at it. I'm one of them, it's my hobby and I only do what I find fun. That's why when I get called talented I don't hate it because there is no hard work to undermine.
People like this exist but all these comments make me think they are quite rare. Apparently they don't exist at all?

I was thinking the same thing! In life people ARE talented (not just with art but EVERYTHING), and it'd be silly to think otherwise. People don't have to feel undermined when people call them talented. Not everything is an attack on your ego. And for the most part, the people who call us artists talented are our friends and family who AREN'T well versed in the field, so it makes sense that they would perceive us as such.

I don't like the word "talent". It sounds like you were born good at something. I'd rather use "skill" because a skill is something you acquire by practising and hard work. You can grow and improve. I've always felt like "talent" ignores all of that.

I know for sure I want to make something; but I'm not certain of what is... maybe it's music, food or art... I have no talent in any of these things but when I share my accomplishments in these areas with someone they seem to think otherwise.
That gives me confidence-- for the moment-- however; I then think about all of the legendary artists, musicians and chefs who create so many amazing things and I feel dwarfed.
I feel like I'm trying to climb a mountain with nothing but a pen. Like an Ant trying to follow in the footsteps of god. I want to keep pushing but, in the end, will I break...? Will it all be for nothing? Is this a huge mistake.
I'm not even sure I want to know the answer.
Blue-Lock and other works inspire me in a different way. Not the, "You can do it!" way or; "Practice makes perfect.." way... but instead the reality-- the assurance of knowing the thoughts of every single one of these people isn't of a god, or a force of nature...
But a human. That human is just as thoughtful as me and has eyes and ears similar to mine.
We're both human. When I'm reminded of that *painfully* obvious fact, I start working.
Little by little I make the climb. I may never see the end of everything, but I want to believe the things I love can be made by me too!

I envy young artists today. There are so many more resources now to develop and feed your hungry need to create. As a child growing up in the 70s /80s all I had were my Saturday morning cartoons and comic books, on Sunday there was Tom Hattan who hosted Popeye cartoons and occasionally he would draw images from squiggles.First time seeing someone"live" drawing. Just me, a #2 pencil and any piece of paper I could get my hands on, even school notes, term papers and test papers weren't safe! One of my teachers was creeped out from disembodied eyes, lips hands practiced on my papers. We call them "studies" now 😂 I learned some things from other people here and there, but I didn't stop, even after my drawings got me laughed at or even worse a lot of "what is that?" I developed my 👁️ in highschool and improved from there. And now even at 50, I am still looking to get better.I get up nearly 3 to 4 hours early every morning before work to draw and look at drawings or source images to feed my creativity. Being an artist who strives and aches to create never ever fades.

I grew up in the 2000s but I still didn't have access to a lot of what artists now have access to. Honestly , I think the fact that I didn't have a large influx of influence is part of the reason why I've always kept drawing.
I think it would be pretty difficult for someone growing up now to learn from their own mistakes, because so many simplifications of said methods are just freely available. But I do agree that art will be the hunger that drives you for life.
