Puerto Rico is my #1 favorite game of all time.
I dont like it when they change historical themes to adjust to our modern sensibilities. Its better not to forget how things were and let that be a reminder of how life has improved and that we still have work to do as a society. Being offended by past humanity's mistakes feels unproductive. Remembering them from an objective but critical standpoint is where its at IMHO. Full awareness promotes change, not turning a blind eye.
In any case, i will probably back it. I want that awaken realms treatment for a great game.

But would you play a game in which one of the central mechanisms is the purchase of slaves and then assigning them to different tasks? The original version tried to whitewash that aspect of the game by referring to the brown worker discs as colonists, when they would have obviously been slaves given the time period implied by the theme.
The shift to Puerto Rico 1897 places the game during a small slice of time in which independent farmers were a significant part of the agricultural economy without the use of slavery.
We are left with a choice between the older version of the game that is oblivious to the historical issues or the current version which embraces history but picks a period in history in which the key game mechanisms and themes are not as abhorrent.
By the way, the political and personal issues surrounding the changes to the game are far more complex than my response can provide. If you are interested, do some additional digging on the internet. Be sure to listen to the case made by Jason Perez who was brought in as a cultural consultant for the redesign, but ended up being upset about the whole process.

@ProfGuppy and all the death around war games? Or 1v1 games in which you "hurt" each other? What about shooter videogames? Let's not be hypocritical. Humanity has done and still does and will continue doing questionable things. Not portraying them will not change that. In fact, turning a blind eye will only perpetuate not shedding a light on them to learn from them or appreciate our present.
