Projection Screen Painting Process In Less Than 3 Minutes

- After a recent purchase of a projector for my video production business I quickly learned that the quality of your picture is highly based off the screen its projected on. After a few hours of trying to decide should I get a screen or should I paint the screen on the wall and call it a day. While comparing prices of all the latest HD & 4K technology I was shocked to find what this pre mixed gallon of GOLD cost. With Prices topping out at well over $800 for just one gallon of this stuff I needed to dig deeper to find out whats actually in this professional grade screen paint? If your in the same position I was then you need to watch this short video. I produced this video just to pass on what I learned simply because the blend of these 3 different paints worked amazingly, but most importantly the total project cost minus the projector was under $40. This special blend of paint can be picked up from your local Home Depot with the paint numbers I provided in this video.. If you find this video helpful be sure to hit the LIKE button. And by all means SUBSCRIBE!!
Saved me around 700$ possibly more.
Went to home depot and gathered all the listed paints. Used your formal of...
Half of the silver screen gallon.
The full tester bottle 8oz of dark pewter
And instead of 1/4 black i used 3/8th quart. Maybe a tad less.
For anyone watching write down the info on the cans themselves. Include the matte and semi gloss and how its described on the can not just the color. Include the base number and such.
This paint on my 4k, 3d, 7000 lumen projecting works fantastically. I can really see the difference from going from an eggshell white wall to this strange dark bluish grey color. Beautiful color to paint an entire wall with.
You sir saved me around 700$ for what this appears to be giving me. The blacks are very black, and the colors really just POP.
In my own opinion... Anyone with a projector with around 2000-3500 lumen will be able to use the formula of 1/4 quart black. For people around 5k-6k lumen add a little more black. Brighter projectors like 7000 or over should probable use 3/8. Adjust accordingly.
Hope this helps whoever's looking to improve their viewing pleasure.
Hello, thanks for your comment, I'm from Argentina and that brand of paintings do not exist here, so I would like to know if you can tell me what type of paint is each one and in what proportions the mixture is made ( I bought a Xgimi Lune UST 1080p with 2700 ansi lumens (and I'm projecting 110 inches ), its better the grey that the white?,I hope you can help me thanksss
can i watch movies in your house? 😁
how well does it perform with lights on?
Hi Sam,
I am about to setup my home theater. but i don;t have a media room so it needs to be setup in the gameroom and that means fairly well lit room. at night its not an issue but during day time there's significant daylight. planning to put black curtains on the entry way.
that said. will a daker gray mix be better for my room condition due to brightness of the room coupled with walls are satin neutral white color and that adds lot of light when the scenes are very bright its like the whole rooms is lit up.
please suggest what kind of mix would be better for me given your experience. also i am considering painting my walls what kind of color do you suggest.
thanks for help.

Your saving 700 hundred dollars and are projecting 5000 lumens at 4K? If budget is a concern, you should NEVER own a home theater quality projector. Buy an LG 86" 4K TV and save even more. (2000 dollars) Stop with painting walls to save money. How about a gray crayola crayon or marker. I'm looking to get into a Rolls Royce but, I saved money on the engine. I put a 1993 Honda Civic engine in it and painted the car with spray paint from Home Depot. Wow
Your a genius..I was using a white wall and then I saw your video..went to home depot and this rest is history..everyone wants to charge an arm and a leg to get rich leaving out those who cant afford simple "paint" mix its people like you that can give back and help people enjoy quality after a hard days work we just want to watch a movie and relax thanks sir you are a modern day Robin hood those who hate on you are writing down your recipe as of right now

Skyview Productions great work and Very fitting compliment from Sadiki !
SADIKI not all hero's wear capes..Love this idea!!!
Check my comment. It has all the info you need on creating the paint color.
The recipe:
Dark pewter 8 fl oz
Black 0.25 quart
Silver Screen 0.5 gal
...or in the same units of measure:
Dark pewter 8 fl oz
Black 8 fl oz
Silver Screen 64 fl oz
So the easier way to measure this out: first put in the dark pewter 8oz into mixing bucket. Then pour black into the 8oz can, then pour that into mixing bucket. Follow same idea for silver screen paint, but do that 8 cans of it (8*8=64oz).
Cheers.
So you have 8 and 8 in the mixing bucket. Are you then mixing the full 64 into the bucket also? Thanks in advanced
Just got done with this mix had to buy a quart of the pewter instead of sample. I used the semi-gloss behr premium plus and measured around 8onces of both black and pewter with half silver screen. Home depo stopped giving semi gloss samples near me. This mix is the real deal and is amazing. No streaks! Amazing with ambient light and colors pop with true blacks. Thank you!

I’ve painted many screens over the years, and this mix is by far the best I’ve used yet. Wow wow! Thx man!
Thanks buddy
what was the mix portions ???
So is this grey mix color better than a black wall?
Levi Jesse darker can be better outdoors with more ambient light. You trade off in that case for your brighter colours. That is why there are metalics mixed in. To be mor reflective to mitigate losses in the brighter tones.

Can you give a better description? You have 2 different paints but mix them and don't go I to detail on ratios or anything.

so many con artists selling snake oil on here.... thank you for being honest with people and saving everyone ALOT of money.
I used white screen paint from amazon for my 177 inch screen in my basement, I got a gallon and I only used half of it, it was pretty expensive, not crazy expensive. It worked beautifully. I use the xgimi horizon pro 4k. A quality screen for this size would be way out of my budget.

Thank you. It works great for my LG HU810PW 4K laser projector.
Thank you so much! You have saved me a ton of money as well. I was looking at projector screens and different brands of screen paint, all are quite pricey, which I don't mind if you get good results. After reading the comments of these products I didn't feel comfortable making a purchase. I found this video, the comments were positive so I gave it a try. Well I couldn't be happier, the colors are amazing and the screen looks professionally done.

What's the mix ratio
I'm totally going to use this because I've been shopping around for screen paint
Same question for me. He was just mixing them bit by bit without showing it.
I showed this video to the home depot paint tech and they mixed it for me right on the spot . Used this mix on a black out cloth stretched over a homemade oil canvis painting frame turned out amazing at 110 " .
Pew 8 oz
Black 8 oz
Silver 64 oz
What is the amount of each paint that you used
Great video. I have a question though, I just went to home depot and could only find silver screen paint. Is it okay to just use silver screen or is the mixed palette required?
What would be Sherwing Williams Dark Pewter version? I can't find it!
What if i have the white fabric screen? Can i paint that and will it work?
Would you recommend painting the entire wall with that blend?? Please respond. It will greatly help. Thanks...
Personally I wouldn’t. But you could.
How the heck did you get so many likes and few dislikes? You never explained the actual blend ratio you just showed how to paint a square on a wall.
Did you see the final result ? This is result of all the dislikes
The 3 differents paints are added by equal quantities? I want a 120-150 inches screen! Thanx
I see you brushed/sanded the wall? Was that to knock off texture or just to clean debris off?
Excellent. Good job. 👍👍👍
I have a RCA 2200 lumens projector how many coats do I need to put on for 120" ? Also I went to home Depot and got all 3 paints according to the number on the front of each can but the quart was not black inside it is white and neither was the other small can and there was no label on the top of the cans. What did I do wrong?
what were the mixture ratios used to create the final product? without that info the video isn't useful.
C Stilwell did you ever find out the ratios? I just bought all three paints but have no clue where to begin. He free hands this in the video but does not provide a measurement for each blend.

i turned the speed to 2 and he did it in less than 1.5 minutes
Es cierto que está pintura gris es lo mismo como si fuera una pantalla me gustaría qué tipo de pintura es y dónde comprarla
Brilliant, I knew someone had to have hacked the system.. Your a boss my friend

Unless you need help with ambient light, I wouldn't do this mix. I first tried silver screen alone, which wasn't bad! Then half silver screen, the 7oz pewter, and roughly 4 oz of the black because I knew 7oz would be even darker. Wanted to post this before the one blabbering idiot replies 'see my already posted comment' when someone is just genuinely asking how to mix it.
I was hoping with the pewter being semi gloss, maybe it'd be better? But even with a uhd35 and p700hd, both light cannons, it's fairly dim.
Now I will say! For ambient light it fights it pretty alright! Almost a poor man's flexigrey, but less gain. Which without measuring, I'd figure this is .5 or .6. its that dim compared to flexigrey
I wish I didn't try this after reading the op saying he had some no name projector. Or really provide much results. But thankfully it's just 50$ in the bin
Tl;Dr it's okay? If you HAVE to go paint, either silver screen alone for ambient light, or Sherwin Williams extra white for light controlled rooms.
But if you can do a screen? The 70$ 100$ elite screens pulldown is fantastic, and flexigrey is great too!
Hay man nice mix do you think it could work with a ultra short throw projector
I can't find your comments on the exact mixture you used, can you please send it to me or direct me on where to find it. Thanks
The trend these days seems to be geared towards very dark/black paint. What are you thoughts? could more black be added to this mix?

HI I just see Video and he showing Mixing white paint with two other paint .But he show only few white paint mixing with other two ... so Do I need to mix full gallon of White paint with other paint .. so can you help me to write down mixing procedure .
Hi Joe - nice work, can you please tell me what is your screen size and out of 1 gallon, 1 quart and a sample, how much did you use from each for the blend?
Sorry for such a delay my screen size was 120in I mixed half of the full Gallon the entire sample bottle and the quart was about 1/4 . When I was done I added a bit more from the gallon can just to lighten up the wall as it was a bit to gray for my Taste. I hope this helps.
No Problem. Thanks.
If you make another batch, save a little and take it back to Home Depot and get a color match. They will give you a sticker with the exact colorant formula. That would be great if you were to post that. Thanks
I know this is an old video...but can you give the Ratio you mixed the paint so we can reproduce it? also...would this work if painted on a fabric screen or only on a wall?

Based on the mixed ratio given in the video, the color is kind of dark grey. I notice the finalized color is slightly lighter than it should be, and that happens to be the color I prefer. Should I just reduce the mix ratio of the black? Thanks.
Dong Yes that’s exactly what I ended up doing off video.
Thanks for confirming!
Just trying to figure out why you didn't paint the whole wall the same colour. when the projector is off a black square looks way worse than a grey wall.
Jason Leo it was difficult enough to get my wife to do this than it would of been to paint a wall that she recently painted.🤪
Nice job. Looks great!
Im sure it's posted in the comments. But Can anyone tell me the ratio needed to create the screen paint... Please!
I just installed my projector this weekend. My wall is currently painted tan so I really like the idea of using your method. My wall has a orange peel texture on it. Should I do anything special to it prior to painting or will it be OK the way it is?

Jeremy Keefer i would definitely smooth the wall out first
i can't figure this out either (how much of which). from what i understand, you only used 1/2 gallon of the white paint? and 1 small of the pewter and 1/4 of the quart of black... so if i want to do an entire wall, i need 1/2 of the black and 2 of the pewter is that correct? i am painting over medium blue, should i use primer first (although the white already says paint and primer)?
Hi Eva, I am in the same situation, can you share what did you end up doing?
Yes a white primer is a good idea in you're starting out white a dark color like blue.
The ratios of paints are:
Dark pewter 8 fl oz
Black 8 fl oz
Silver Screen 64 fl oz = 0.5 gallon
In my experience it takes about 32 oz to paint 80 square feet, which is a wall that's 10ft by 8ft. I am planning to do two coats, then 64 oz of total paint should be good. This above recipe has a total of 80 oz, so that should be good.
appreciate your video, however you keep saying in here "Check my comment it has all you need". but I along with many others can not seem to find how much of each color of paint to mix together! what is the formula? or what parts are adjustable? thank you in advance.

So is this grey mix color better than a black wall?
Im confused are you supposed to use behr 1050 pure white or behr silver screen matte? In the video the can says pure white but the sticker says silver screen and they are different color codes..is that some sort of half and half im so confused.
The pure white matte is the base that the color is mixed into.

Hi , anyone have the equivalent for this mix in the UK , and what ratio , thanks
Marc Godfrey Hi , I have exactly the same question , it's kinda like there's no specifics ! I think it depends on the shade weather lighter or darker .. Eye monitoring , but in my opinion THE DARKER IT GETS THE BETTER ITS REFLECTS .
I have had a great way tried it on many projects that requires a dye testing before I ruin everything , start painting a different shades of the colors (i.e. From light to dark grey) then test them all at once using your projector , look at the differences which one is giving you the best reflection . GOOD LUCK 🤓
