Why is it always that people from the empire defect to the rebels after 'seeing how evil the empire is'? With Fin it kinda worked, he was just a lowly stormtrooper and had never been in proper combat before, after seeing how the first order actually fought he wanted out. With Iden it doesn't make sense for her to see it that way. Not only did she grow up in a high ranking imperial military family, she herself is a high ranking imperial person, she knows how the empire really works, she knows what the empire really does, she has no problem with mowing down surrendering rebels because she's a true imperialist. With her its like a high ranking SS officer trying to defect after learning about the concentration camps. They would already know, it makes no sense. Just have them stick to the empire for once, evil people/complex characters who don't see what they're doing as wrong for various reasons, exist and people like to play them, EA...
Motivations aside, the whole story of defecting to the rebels is just so damn generic. it would've been nice to have this whole story going on throughout the events of Episode 7 as she continues to fight for the empire and what she feels is right, maybe, MAYBE finally deciding to defect after too many war crimes. What we gotta remember in the Star Wars lore though is that the rebellion isn't some group of virtuous angels either. There's straight up terror attacks, drug smuggling, and weapons dealing to criminals in their background.
Lord Woffingshire yeah agree on that one, the story was rather mediocre.I would've loved it better if she defects out of selfishness and anger and only try to manipulate the rebels out of vengeance for her home world.
What I would have loved for this campaign is maybe have it to where it starts in the Clone Wars and moves up to the Imperial age and then maybe a DLC to where it continues into the first order age because there were still clones around in the first-order age just not that many
A bit late but the reason why I think it's a problem is they made her breath empire like you'd think she'd never detect and the problem is she's not a normal stormtroopers she's special forces if you not much about them, members of an special force are normally dedicated to the faction there apart. I don't think the story is awful after seeing half the crap Disney made but she defected way too soon and didn't have much motivations (yes blow up rebluic owned plants would be enough) but I think it should have been Iden that met luke instead of the other guy to make it even more impactful because jedi would have been depicted as enemies and murderous to the empire but having all those thoughts smashed and illusion broken would have made Iden think more about what the empire doing but I dunno I think the story was an after thought
The prequel book about Inferno Squad actually makes the story worse. In that book, it goes into detail about how much Iden and the Inferno Squad worship and love the Empire, they even take pleasure in watching Rebels get tortured and massacred, but then in the campaign she suddenly flips. Like I said, the book makes the campaign less plausible.
It’s actually pretty fun to play, the story is in a classic Star Wars style, it’s just that Iden changes her ideals at the drop of a hat. The gameplay, voice acting, graphics, and everything else is great.
I hate that I now have to say "the good one" before I can talk about the good Battlefront 2 because fucking EA decided to use the same name for their shit games
DICE should be separate from EA, nobody likes their shitty repetitive 2K games that change no functions at all. They make everything about money and we would be better off with Mirror’s Edge and Battlefront not being unfinished games. Mirrors edge only had like five missions and 7 side missions but it’s atmosphere and aesthetic are beautiful.
It sucked. My god did it suck. The whole campaign would have been better had it been entirely from the Imperial perspective and maybe how they run off with the remnant to join the first order.
It’s not that bad really. Every aspect, besides the fact that Iden changes her ideals at the drop of a hat, is great. Graphics, gameplay, story, background, all that.
Wait, they actually did the swapping sides thing? I didn't think the story would seriously be that predictable. I mean people mentioned all along how much they'd hate it or it better not be just another "bad guy turns good" story & they actually did it.. Damn, DICE.
"You see if you just take away the smell, taste, and consistency away from it, Shit is the best choice for a meal!" -The Mind of a Battlefront 2 apologist
We seriously need a Darth Tyranus(Count Dooku) game, he seriously seems like a character who's background can be explored more, I mean in the clone wars and somewhat in up until his death in Revenge of the sith he had a lot of power and stature in the empire. I think Sony Santa Monica or Naughty Dog especially would really knock this out of the park IMO.
Totally agree. So glad you made this video. They should of just stuck with an Imperial campaign and given their perspective the whole way through. They easily could of gone back and forth through the eyes of rebel characters and show the skewed paradigm between the two factions. That would of been the more challenging and better use of proper storytelling instead of this garbage they lobed on us.
DataGh0st Exactly. A mechanic of shifting perspective around the battlefield would have been very interesting. It opens up more dynamic storytelling. Heck Dice did this well in BF3 where you're a tank driver fighting from the city outskirts to the centre, you get captured by the enemy, killed on live video, and the next mission has you as special forces finding the guy who killed you and moving through the same areas/interacting with the scene of the death. It would be awesome to be an Imperial Officer getting briefed on the battle below, only to switch to a rebel pilot who opens fire on that star destroyer, after you kill the imperial fleet you get orders to help out on the ground so you descend to the planet, only to switch to a storm trooper unit carrying out the attack that was briefed back on the star destroyer and even taking out some pesky rebel pilots etc. Weave multiple character pov's into something epic. BF1 did this idea really well in its tutorial.
Someone posted on Reddit that it was insulting that EA made a campaign that was shorter than the amount of time it would have took to unlock Darth Vader.
Disney, please strip the license from EA. They're 0/2 on star wars games now. I think they've proven they aren't the ones to be making video games for the franchise
I was so hyped for this campaign, I bought the game specifically for the campaign. I refused to look up anything about the game, in an attempt to avoid spoilers. I only asked one thing the game: Don't let Iden turn against the Empire at the end. I told myself: "I would rather her die at the end an Imperial, than her surviving as a turncoat." Then I got the game, had so much fun in the first three missions, I was even planning on reading the Inferno Squad book afterwards. Then as soon as that fourth mission started I saw what was coming, and immediately got disappointed. I actually turned off the game, and it took me a whole other day to convince myself to continue on with it. But I suppose that serves me right for not looking up spoilers. I mean the official description of the campaign says: "Fight for the Empire as Iden Versio, leader of the Imperial Inferno Squad." Why would I ever think that I'd only be fighting the Rebels for like 3% of the campaign. Sorry about essentially typing out an essay, I needed to vent about it. XD
I am willing to bet the only reason they made it to were you could play as heroes and villians in the campaign was so the person playing would be like, "Wow, playing as these guys are so cool I am going to go unlock them in multiplayer!" Which then they expected the player to purchase micro transactions to be able to do so.
To be a devil's advocate, sometimes developers can shoot their mouths off about under development features that are later cut, and later fans can be upset that a "promised" game feature isn't present. And sometimes there are minor issues a game alpha has that can unintentionally be expressed as worse than they really are. Game devs aren't necessarily personable people, so they're usually given a script on what to bring up, how to approach things, etc. And if a dev has a habit of ignoring those scripts, it's not a good idea to give him a position where he needs them, which would be pretty much any prominent position in a game development studio.
They could have done something really cool. Maybe they could have made Del the only one to defect and given you the option to play as him with the rebels or keep playing as Iden with the empire. It makes no sense for Iden to go from praising the empire to slaughtering stormtroopers in a matter of minutes.
Yeah... I got really pissed when she switched sides. I was really hoping it would actually be an empire point-of-view, but they instantly threw it away! She was so cool at the beginning, with the rebels screaming in fear. But then she ran off and turned good....
I still haven’t finished the 3-4 hour campaign because I stopped because it got so boring from being so cliche and predictable and the pacing was nonexistent. Matty got it 100%.
I was so excited to be the bad guys for a change such a good idea fuck being nice (I always love the baddies in films and games muhahahaaa) but honestly in the eyes of the empire the rebels are the bad guys, buuut looks like another reason not to buy after all the controversy bollocks........ JUST GIMME A SEQUEL TO STAR WARS BOUNTY HUNTER!!!!!
Ash Samuels Omg right? Boba Fett! I was thinking that might be another game to come from EA's contract with Disney but they would find a way to fuck it up.
Just Shoot'em Gaming yeeaah unfortunately they probably would. I was so excited for what prey 2 was originally supposed to be, it literally looked like a next gen bounty hunter!! No idea why it got scrapped :, (
When I was playing, as soon as she switched I could almost hear you shouting out in pain. The story was good at first but was like they ran out of time.
I could've contently ignored everything with all the multiplayer microtransaction bullshit, just from having a single player story dedicated to the Empire. But no, couldn't even have that. Iden's campaign cutting her out of her own story so you can play as Luke, Leia, Han, Lando, and Kylo Ren, is bad. The fact that there isn't really a story after the 5-6 chapters but rather a collection of independent mission that play out on their own until the game decides to end during the battle on Jakku is bad, worse that Iden's story "ends" on the all too familiar note of "the good guy risks their live to save their evil father so that they might be redeemed". But what I hate most of all, is why Iden defects. Operation Cinder is so idiotic and makes no goddamn sense, the Empire's plan after the Emperor's death is "destroy random planets", which includes Imperial loyal planets. Its so forced, and it makes Iden's defection boring, not only that but it only takes one talk with Lando and Leia before Iden and Del are readily trusted by Rebels. Given all of this, Iden playing a guest character in her own story, the forced inclusion of OT characters, and forcing Iden's defection so we can get her to the Rebels so she can be in the Resistance. It feels like this whole story was rushed together just so it can get to The Last Jedi stuff.
Hey, this game is disappointing. Almost all the hero missions in the campaign shouldn’t have been in the game. The Luke mission and the Kylo Ren mission are the only ones that make since for the story and help develop characters.
I'm sorry but them being DICE shouldn't be an excuse for bad writing or a poor story if you have this much money you should be able to hire good writers I think the fact this story is weak is suprising because from what I remember the writer for this story helped write spec ops the line which has an amazing story and a lot of depth I could be wrong though
Why did it suck to play as the empire, cause Disney took a dump on the Star Wars lore and reverted the empire from moral ambiguity to black and white universe with stereotype space Nazi's.
Let’s not forget that Iden did not want to join the rebels; she just wanted to help Vardos and that turned into helping civilians and then del convinced her to join the rebels
The original Battlefront 2 made a better Imperial campaign by having you play as a loyal Clone trooper who had been serving since the Clone Wars. How the hell did game making and story telling making such a giant leap back 10 years later?
The game lost me when she was in the cell in her full imperial kit !!! What idiots let a enemy combatant keep there entire uniform/kit ???? In a f..King cell !!!
A better story for EA's Battlefront 2: The Empire becomes divided after the death of the emperor. Iden sees what the Empire is becoming and chooses to fight for the Empire she grew up in. The remnants of the Galactic Empire versus the rise of The First Order.
*FIRST OF ALL!* The original battlefront 2 (2005) did this long ago. You play as a clone at the end of the clone war and into the transition into the Galactic empire! Why are people forgetting this?
Iden's switch to the Rebellion makes perfect sense from a gameplay perspective. There are at least 2 requirements for any 1st person /3rd person shooter campaigns 1. Make the player feel powerful ( Iden is a Imperial special forces officer so check) 2.Make the player feel like a winner ( If Iden stays with the Empire all your actions taken during the campaign will be futile & meaningless as the Empire loses in the end regardless of what you the player has done .) There's a reason why almost all WW2 FPS games never had you play as a German or Japanese soldier in a campaign.
It would have been one thing if Iden was just a regular Storm Trooper or Imperial Pilot, and would have defected sometime before the Battle at Endor, but even after DS2 blew up, with Vader, The Emperor, Admiral Piett, and thousands more imperials dead she's still fighting and killing Rebel scum. Gee Iden, I know you probably blasted countless rebel fighters to death; some of them might have been my friends, but welcome to the Rebel Alliance now that we're winning the war. SMH BTW EA, past Star Wars games have succeeded by only focusing on non-movie characters as the protagonist; Kyle Katarn, Dash Rendar, Revan, etc.
She was raised to believe in everything the Empire stood for. But when they started attacking there own people, she felt like the Empire she believed in had changed which is why she switched sides. I agree the the storyline was very predictable but I did actually in joy it.
You summarized it all... Now, my only dream would be to see Inferno Squad after Yavin 4 and before Endor. How cool would it be to play them in that context. Also, to be fair, operation Cinder doesn't make any sense in the lore... It's Disney Star Wars for you.
I think I’m about 6 years late for this video, but on the mission The Storm, when you first load in and turn around right next to the front of the Corvus you’ll find a very undersized gozanti-class cruiser and it’s so weird to think that an AAA game would have something so easy to find that’s so wrong lol
I knew it was going to be garbage, we need some independent studio to do a dark side campaing, exploding gungans with the force, decapitating ewoks with lightsabers, EA will never approve such things
Isn’t it great how Blake said the Visceral game was cancelled for being a long story driven linear action rpg style game that was not what the public wanted, and I quote “You need to know when to cut the bridge if it is not going to make you a ton of money”. Isn’t this single player completely linear? And yes, keeping Iden on the side of the Empire would have made for a much better Lord of the Rings movie length *single player linear action game*. What is wrong with EA?
It made sense for Finn (nothing says he was really loyal, in his mind, to start with). In this case, even if the Empire kills her family or homeland, she would maybe plan retaliation against some responsible officers or become an independent rogue (she would not join the Rebel Alliance; except maybe after many years of being rogue).
As Iden Versio is modelled off her voice actor, She could be Rey’s mum, as it would be possible for Disney to chuck some old person prosthetics on her, put her in the movies and just let it be a detail that viewers can understand without playing the game, but one that will be satisfying for those who played the game. Unless Rey’s father is Luke, there’s no one else worth keeping it secret
Thank you so much for sharing Matty. I was beyond hyped to play from the perspective of Imperial special forces, and crush the Rebel scum. But the moment she defected, I felt sick to my stomach as the entire story was just ruined. There was so much potential, if only they would've stuck to their words about it being an "Imperial story" which the entire ad campaign was based on. Instead we got a cheesy cliche' story that was a huge disappointment. It would be wonderful if they made it right with the upcoming First Order DLC, but I am almost certain they will not. Between this and the crates, the game has been a severe let down, which is sad because the multiplayer is a lot of fun. I will add that I thought Iden was incredibly well played/voiced, and had an interesting personality. Anyway thanks again, and everyone please like/share this video so others can hear the importance.
New Zohw, I have been slowly losing interest in star wars every bloody story comes back to the Death Star, the rebels from a tactical standpoint should lose but nope Lucas wills it and they win. What I would give for a story without a Death Star and the empire winning.
Read the expanded universe. There are still some derpy moments (like the Jedi opposing reactivating Imperial superweapons because it's more humane to kill the intergalactic invaders with conventional arms), but there are some really good authors there.
The three things I hate the most about the campaign is this: it’s short, literally ALL the cutscenes stutter, and Iden joins the rebellion way too early
I started hunting around for my receipt as soon as Inferno Squad cucked out to the Rebels. I kept playing until the end, just to see if the campaign might do something interesting and have Iden join up with/help start the First Order---slim as I knew those chances were---but when the credits rolled it was time to return this wretched missed opportunity of a game. (It didn't help that the other main reason I bought this game---namely, split screen arcade mode---was anaemic to the point of not being worth even dabbling in).
To be fair this is a bit more realistic than Han Solo's story of defecting. Sure he didn't go straight to the rebels but at least Iden was pissed about a whole world being killed rather than being ordered just to kill one Wookie...nothing against Chewie but c'mon. Who knew a guy that's only in it for the money would care so much about an overgrown dog. The 5 hours was very disappointing though but very fun also and actually felt like a spinoff movie almost with all the set pieces such as X-wings and tie fighters actually fighting in the Jakku mission and crashing around you when you landed. Also at the time when Iden asked to join the rebels, they had actually needed help, especially of someone who is experienced as special forces. Gallius Rax was beating the rebels in many of the battles but ended up only wanting to get rid of the weak so he sent all the forces to Jakku and basically let Natural Selection do its thing. So with a bit of knowledge of the Expanded Universe its a bit more believable...just a bit.😂
as with most star wars games i see battlfront games as non cannon storys based off the movies such as a drunk telling his old battles to people in a bar
I agree with you 100%. And that's something. I would like to love the game m, but with all these disappointments... Seems absurd man. Not playing the victim, but something has to be done for misleading consumers, lying, milkikg the dry and taking us for a fool.
It seems pretty clear that it is designed to showcase playing as heroes, so that players will want to unlock them in MP. Sad that this is "canon". Does a jedi like Luke even need a saber to battle insects? He could just smoosh them with force push...
Im thinking maybe they are Phasma’s parents. I just can’t believe they would reveal rey’s parents in a video game. Also, totally agree with the switching sides bs. I really wanted a darker story to actually see what it was like to be apart of the empire. This is what worries me about the The Last Jedi. I feel like disney will HAVE to make a feel good movie and one where the good guys always have to win. I guess as I’ve gotten older I really want a darker SW movie. Oh and BTW just finished KOTOR for the first time on my iphone!! Holy shit what an ending!!!
I don't mind that she defects. I just wish they hadn't done it so soon. I wish that her arc was a bit longer, I wish we could have seen why she would go from being 100% gung ho to betraying everything she's ever learned. I also don't like how the Rebellion basically welcomes her with open arms without any real consequences. She doesn't even seem to be on thin ice at any point. Leia and the other rebel leaders just take her claim that she's defected at face value. They don't even seem suspicious of her at any point.
I don't have any problem with defecting but I wish we had more imperial .There still hope maybe in future dlc and updates we see rise of first order or better see a pregual when inferno squad was made after destruction of death star one and were killing rebel scums and fighting with remnants of saw gerra partisans
The moment iden turned to the rebels, I stopped playing the campaign and stop caring about it. While I thought she was a cool character as an inferno squad troop, her transition into the rebel alliance felt rushed, under developed, and confusing. I will still play her empire character in arcade mode because she isn’t a bad one to play as .
(Sorry my grmar sucks) i actually prefer aiden and del being reys parents. Cause reys isnt the kid of luke liea han or lando so her parents have to be someone we havent seen yet. Therefore in the last jedi it would be a cool reveial for everyone and those who are into the extra star wars stuff get a little pay off its like watching a marvel movie after reading a tone of marvel comics its big. And little things in there for those who delve into all parts of the cannon.

it was more of the empire destroyed her home world rather than just evil all together.

Roberto Santiago Amen.
Amen I remember playing it on Xbox it was legendary

Depressing how keeping your mouth shut and just being an obedient drone has become a job qualification even in something like a video game.

Gabe Stump yah but it was by the same franchise. Same goes with halo 5 Suppose to be rouge master chief but instead one cutscene of that
Gavin Beard. Difference is that Arkham Origins is at least decent, still bad but far better then this whatever this is.

I think the Lando mission was comic relief, I think Shriv was enough.
5 hours? No, it's 4 hours.
Joseph Stalin, It's eight if you walk very slowly.
ruclips.net/video/aksrcv380GM/видео.html :(
So I guess you guys aren’t in favour of selling the rights to Fallout to EA?
Todd Howard sounds like a great idea
How bout you guys get the star wars license
Let’s not forget that Iden did not want to join the rebels; she just wanted to help Vardos and that turned into helping civilians and then del convinced her to join the rebels
The original Battlefront 2 made a better Imperial campaign by having you play as a loyal Clone trooper who had been serving since the Clone Wars. How the hell did game making and story telling making such a giant leap back 10 years later?
The Han Solo part in Maz’s cantina made me want a Star Wars RPG...
The game lost me when she was in the cell in her full imperial kit !!! What idiots let a enemy combatant keep there entire uniform/kit ???? In a f..King cell !!!
A better story for EA's Battlefront 2:
The Empire becomes divided after the death of the emperor.
Leia isyour favourite? BRUH! BUHT REVAN!
SMH
BTW EA, past Star Wars games have succeeded by only focusing on non-movie characters as the protagonist; Kyle Katarn, Dash Rendar, Revan, etc.
She was raised to believe in everything the Empire stood for. But when they started attacking there own people, she felt like the Empire she believed in had changed which is why she switched sides. I agree the the storyline was very predictable but I did actually in joy it.
Agreed
This game is trash happy I never bought this grabage
Everything wrong with the story: everything.
It would've been cool if Versio defected from the Empire after Operation Cinder, yet remained anti-Rebel.
I am not planing on buying this gambling game so, spoil away..
I loved the campaign up to she did the most cliché thing by joining them. 😩
I don't care for battlefront 2
I'm waiting for better single player games
I'm starting to not like Star wars because of the rebels always winning everything
New Zohw, I have been slowly losing interest in star wars every bloody story comes back to the Death Star, the rebels from a tactical standpoint should lose but nope Lucas wills it and they win.
What I would give for a story without a Death Star and the empire winning.
That's one of the reasons I like ep 3
Read the expanded universe. There are still some derpy moments (like the Jedi opposing reactivating Imperial superweapons because it's more humane to kill the intergalactic invaders with conventional arms), but there are some really good authors there.
Play the old star wars Jedi Knight. Witch you choose a side good or bad. Oh wait thats to innovating. Done more than 15 years ago.
I remember playing the game and being happy about the imperial story. Then rebels and I just gave up
And this is the tip of the active ice berg for how Disney has ruined star wars. Good bye precious expanded universe...
And for God's sake could the force awakens be a more thinly veiled new hope remake?
Mickey murdered Star Wars the moment the pen left the page with Lucas.
Everythings wrong with it
The three things I hate the most about the campaign is this: it’s short, literally ALL the cutscenes stutter, and Iden joins the rebellion way too early
Spoil Matty Im not going anywhere near this Disease! And that story plot?!?! That has Disneys stink all over it my friends.
This campaign doesn't give me a feeling of pride and accomplishment.
Well spamming the alt-fire Iden has with a purple rarity card makes her very powerful in Heroes VS Villains
The worst part is, an Imperial turned good plot CAN work, Finn is proof of that. It was just executed terribly in this game.
I found that 90% of the locations were just there because they were fresh in people's minds from the Force Awakens
I agree with you 100%. And that's something. I would like to love the game m, but with all these disappointments... Seems absurd man. Not playing the victim, but something has to be done for misleading consumers, lying, milkikg the dry and taking us for a fool.
Heroes VS Villains, Strike, and Galactic Assault is what I play this game for.
I was so hyped to play as the empire, but even before playing the game, I knew they would do this
yup, definitely not getting this trash now lol
It's more like the campaign for Battlefront 2 was a demo/advertisement for the heroes you can buy
Marty
Idea
have Starkiller in Battlefront 3 with coop of X2 a scrapped would be hero in cancelled OG Battlefront 3
It seems pretty clear that it is designed to showcase playing as heroes, so that players will want to unlock them in MP. Sad that this is "canon". Does a jedi like Luke even need a saber to battle insects? He could just smoosh them with force push...
Dude... Del and Iden are NOT Rey's parents. That part of your argument is completely bs.
Other than that, I agree with everything.
*aggressively chews cookie*
You make some vaild points. I still enjoyed the Campaign, but I fully respect your point of view on this matter.
God Damnit Matty ITS THE WILL OF THE FORCE, EXCEPT THAT PLOT ARMOR! Lol
Everytime somone insults or calls out EA it feels me with joy
hey matty! think you could put a list of must have games, and games you don't like for new switch players in an upcoming podcast?
I don't mind that she defects. I just wish they hadn't done it so soon. I wish that her arc was a bit longer, I wish we could have seen why she would go from being 100% gung ho to betraying everything she's ever learned. I also don't like how the Rebellion basically welcomes her with open arms without any real consequences. She doesn't even seem to be on thin ice at any point. Leia and the other rebel leaders just take her claim that she's defected at face value. They don't even seem suspicious of her at any point.
Bro if ea had a Movie campaign instead like EP 1-9 that would be Cool
Because Dice still doesn't know how to make Single-Player Campaigns.
Would have been much more interesting if Iden helped create the First Order (SPOILERS) instead of joining the Rebels.
This campaign was fantastic
I don't have any problem with defecting but I wish we had more imperial .There still hope maybe in future dlc and updates we see rise of first order or better see a pregual when inferno squad was made after destruction of death star one and were killing rebel scums and fighting with remnants of saw gerra partisans
Does anyone know if this game is moddable? Not planning on writing a new story or anything...
Wild Productions nope
They have a section in their terms about UGC, don’t know if you can change the campaigns scripts like that though.
Haha Frostbite moddable? Lol good fucking luck.
MygunsJammedify Lol. I was mostly kidding. Mostly...
Wild Productions oh lol
They forced you to play those heroes so you would want to buy loot boxes to unlock them.
What a boring campaing. Hopefully in the Star wars battlefront 3 we will get a Separatist campaing, where you play as Separatist till the end.
"Battlefront 2 story spoilers ahead."
Does it really matter at this point?
They should’ve made a game like last tiger from battlefield 5.
Whoops, thought I was watching a Cinemas Sins video, my bad lol.
