These cars are extremely addictive LOL. Been buying, building, restoring and racing W-bodies since 2002 and as a lifelong mechanic have always sworn by the 3800 engine and GM-W, H and 2nd gen G bodies
The Impala SS from this generation got the Supercharged 3.8. But they only made it for a year or two. The LS trim got the N/A spec 3.8. And the lower trims got the 3100 V6..any of the 3.8 examples are pretty good though.
Did some of the lower trim GMs get the 3100? I thought they were all the 3.4, like the Impala. I know the 3100 was the base v6 in the Grand Am. I’ve honestly never looked into the 3.1 or 3.4 lol. 😂
Had a stock base model one as a rental car back in the day, for a full week. Wasn't slow, but not quick either. It was big, plush, roomy, comfortable. Being single, too big for me. (This was back when no one lived out of their vehicle by choice.)
Yeah, they’re nothing crazy bone stock, but overall good cars. But the modifications potentially is huge! I actually briefly rode in a 3.8 supercharged Riveria today. I had no clue those were as fancy as they were back then. My friend might buy it, and if he does I’m sure I’ll share videos of it once it’s built down the road!
That’s awesome, I’m glad you’re enjoying it! I still want to find one of these to do a big turbo build on, but idk if I ever actually will go down that rabbit hole.
A schoolteacher for the district I worked for had one, silver just like this one except the rear was not black as most were instead the rear was silver like the rest of the car and it really gave it a unique look.
That’s awesome!! So many times have I thought about buying an 05 SS to build much further than my 02 3.8 was with a basic stock pulley supercharger and bolt ons. 😍
The LS had the 3.8 aka 3800 not 3400. On Monte Carlos the LS was a base with the 3400 but on Impalas the LS was one step bellow the 04 SS being the L36 N/A instead of the L67 SC
Got my first car 4 years ago a 2005 chevy impala with 133000 miles and enough rust on it to give you tetanus for just looking at it. Shes still kicking to this day. The 3800 V6 series 2 engine in her is bullet proof never once had a problem with it. Shes at 176000 know and has taken me cross country. There is no better car id rather have bought and will be proably the best car i will ever own.
I did buy one for like for lie 4000 dollars, had a small problem whit the fuel-pump it was easy to find a replacement most likely the same as a Saab/opel (vaxhall). Need to look over a stuck brake-pad but it's a car easy to work on, nice to drive and feels modern.
I was born in 1989 so I grew up with all these and man I miss cars from the 90s early 2000s they were so much better in every single way and they weren't infused with planned obsolescence. Play bankruptcy GM was a totally different company from what it is today. They really were the mark of Excellence back then like their slogan went
@@AutomotiveAnonymous208 Yes, I now have for the last 5 years the last Impala SS ever made the 2009 with the 5.3 LS4. Very fast excellent riding car but as with most it needed a new transmission. Oh and if you watch the 2004 Indy 500 race you will see the 2004 Indy 500 SS lead out the field.

great Canadian made car.. im still driving my new 2006 ltz impala 3.9l looking at getting into an outback turbo. is the outback a better highway drive?
Yeah they are! Oh very cool. Yeah, the modern Turbo Outback’s are incredibly smooth and comfortable to strip and traveling vehicles. I don’t have any complaints about mine regarding that. 🙂
That would be a sick project! If you’re going to do that level of swap maybe consider a 4T80E from the Northstar Cadillacs. I don’t personally know much about them other than that’s a transmission option. I know when I had my supercharged Impala I was always worried about the transmission.
@@AutomotiveAnonymous208 i have a feeling a 4t80e wont handle the power ill be throwing at it in the long term lol. Itll be similar tl the twin engine impala, but over double the power
😭 I miss my '03 3800 Impala LS. I sold it in 2015 after I bought a 2015 Equinox. Sold him for what the dealership wanted to give me, $500, smh. Now here I am 43 yrs old and hoping to find one for my 15 yr old son. 😭 people want too much for an old ass car.
Haha I totally get that! Ouch 🤕 It’s crazy, since less than 1% of people know or care about the power potential of this push rod V6, it makes no sense why they don’t all cost $1,000 these days haha.
Almost any car with the 3800 SII or SIII can be heavily modified to make that power. The problem with all the 3800 SII car accept the Camaro and Firebird (that had the option of a T-5 manual and the 4L60E)was the transmission, the 4T65E was very weak, especially hooked to the LS4, it is possible to swap the 4T80E from Northstar fwd vehicles but, it's a huge hassle. I think it's possible to use a manual transaxle like the F40 6 speed from G6s but it's a lot of work too. From this period I always rember people buying the Taurus and Sable with the DOHC 3L V6 for dirt cheap, they were the Altima of the mid-late 2000s. The Impalas were always more expensive in good shape or they had major problems already and I tend to think stock for stock the 3L DOHC Fords were a little quicker than 3800 SII W-body cars. Once you start mods, of course anything can happen and you can change the fabric of the entire car if you want too. You'd be better off finding a Caprice PPV, G8, GTO, F body or 5th Gen Camaro than an Impala from this period, even the 300-320hp 3.6 V6 cars with rwd are a better choice, you can find decent running G8, GTO and PPV V8s for $5-7k.
Great insight! I’ve only more recently been hearing about the 4T80E swap. And I know a few people have messed around with the Fiero transmission to some extent. But at this point I don’t remember a lot of the old specs and forums posts that I once knew. Great suggestion, for someone without sentimental attachment your list of RWD V8 GMs or even like the ATS for more of a tuner car would be sweet. Personally, I’d love a supercharged Chevy SS as the budget/sleeper CTS-V or the new CT5-blackwing! I drove the 3.0TT version and holy cow is that a well balanced GM sedan. 🤩
I own this car right now in 2024. Its got over 200k miles on it and it still runs, its definitely not the fastest thing ever but its definitely fun! I also have fun fixing it too😂😂 I wanna add some kind of forced induction at some point but there’s more work that needs to be done before I can even consider it. This is also my first car too and it does a good job convincing me to keep it everyday
That’s a fair point! These engines just had so much potential and at one time about as much after market for performance mods that mustangs or corvettes had at the same time. From what I see online their aftermarket support has definitely died down quite a bit from what I use to see available…😝
@@Titanic19127 doubt my cammed 300c would loose to the average one I come across on the street. Typically have subwoofers, cheap wheel's and horrible exhausts.
Spinning out a rod bearing or blowning a head gasket with boost pressure is almost a guarantee, on non boost factory spec engines. Ring and bearing clearances are larger on boost prepped engines.
Had 2. A 01 and 02. Oldest son wrecked the first one. The second one had a clogged cat and melted the intake. From there lost the motor. Our youngest son was driving it and is looking to get one of his own
The only thing thing that I hate about these Impala was that they only came in Fwd, Image if there was Awd LT, LTZ, SS models even RWD as a option, but for a Fwd it was a good car dependable and could modify for a cheap grocery getter.
That’s even more impressive, must have been a very healthy 3.8! Kinda crazy that a decade newer 3.6 charger makes 100 peak HP more than the old V6. But you can’t get around all that charger tonnage I guess, lol.
The vast most of them are in junkyards as they just weren't built to last. Just one example where GM used plastic high pressure fuel injection parts, which eventually would degrade and leak. This would cost thousands to repair most of the time they were junked as they weren't worth this costly repair. Which is why you rarely see them anymore while my daily driver is a 2001 Accord with 345,000 miles. The thing won't die. The first expensive repair and it will be retired, but again, the thing just won't die. I suspect if it was a chevy I probably would have junked it multiple times for many reasons.
My dad drove a 94 accord for about 5 years back and forth to work he bought it from a friend about 6 years ago for 500$ . My dad put around 100k miles on it the car hade around 400k and the transmission went out last year unfortunately. But the motor runs great. We did have to put a new timing belt on and have the head redone because when the belt broke it bent a few values lol. But I still drive it around a little close to the house because I love the car. My dad know dives a 08 honda accord to work and back. He also has a 1999 chevy silverado and it has 440k miles on the motor and has never been rebuild or anything the motor still runs great. The transmission when out at 300k miles though
Lol, you’re right, but they did have potential! 😉 I use to beat up on other high schooler friends mustangs when I had my supercharged/bolt on Impala senior year. That was fun.
@@AutomotiveAnonymous208 the junk 4 speed transmissions GM put on these cars were notorious. I have a 2010 Imp with the 3.5 engine and while the engine is fine the tranny is what holds the car back. I'm not beating older pickup trucks with that slug. 😭
Best sleepers are a buick regal GS! supercharged 3.8 grandma car! The Impala in video isn't a sleeper though, isn't a l67 supercharged car, a Impala SS would be.
Yeah, the l67 was a cool engine! But if there’s SS badges I’d say that’s more obvious and less of a sleeper than building a base exterior trim level. But the 10s 0-60 it did on camera is definitely no sleeper. It’s old and exhausted lol. Or at least short winded at my altitude.
@@AutomotiveAnonymous208 yeah a regal GS is less obvious seeing GS than it is SS on a blacked out Impala, would be nice if l67 was optional on regular looking trim impalas, similar how Pontiac did firebird formulas and the last gen grand prix gtps
Honorable mentions other than the supercharged gm cars would be a buick lacrosse super, it has the drivetrain from a ls4 v8 impala ss and a grand prix gxp, but in form of a grandma buick
I had an 05 LS and I’ve got to say that 3800 was a bullet proof and extremely fast engine. I absolutely loved this car and would love to have another fully loaded one. But my favorite memory was always beating people at stop lights.
I actually use to really want a Dodge Intrepid RT with that 3.5 engine, but then I found my Impala. Yeah, those 3.5 Nissans and also the Toyotas were really impressive when they each came out. 😎
Oh I’m sure it does! And the cool thing about that mileage and low price is when stuff does need replaced chances are you can upgrade with improved parts at a similar cost as factory replacement stuff. Win win!
Yea I definitely love GM w bodies also. I've had 4 of them. I currently have a beautiful 04 dale Jr supercharged Monte Carlo ss. Before I had an 03 Monte Carlo SS high sport, an 02 Impala LS and a 99 GTP
@@AutomotiveAnonymous208 I've done a few mods but nothing too crazy yet. I put a zzp racing pcm in my old GTP, a K&N cold air intake I ran into the hole in the side of the fender/bumper where the hole is and sealed it with Plexiglas so it didn't draw hot air from anything else, bigger injectors at 80 psi, and a smaller 2.8 pulley. But everything else pretty much stock. Honestly even stock I'm very happy with the 3800s and it's my most favorite engine of all time! And honestly I wouldn't trade my Dale Jr Monte Carlo for any other car in the world. This is one gm w body I will have till the day I die
Yeah, those were a better power plant bone stock! But did not seem to hold up to mods as well or have the room under the hood like the smaller V6. It’s kinda crazy that the v6 got all the mods and after market support back then, but they were also sold in much more quantity and a decade before the LS4 so I’m not necessarily suprised.
@@AutomotiveAnonymous208 not to argue , I own a SS Monte w/3800 and great points but there's no better engine stock or aftermarket than LS engines. Especially aftermarket so little confused but 3800 is a great engine
Yeah, for sure! I’m also just sentimental to the silly V6 lol. GM definitely put out some great push rod engines in the last few years before the current AFM/cylinder deactivation systems have added complexity and in some cases lifter failure problems. I use to have a 1998 LS1 Trans Am (that I sold before starting my channel) and it was such a great car! I added bolt ons like headers to it and it felt so healthy and such linear power. 🤩
Yes, the 7th gen in the 90’s had the LT1 5.7 V8 from the corvette! The SS trim of these 8th gen’s was only offered in 04-05 with the supercharged 3.8 V6. And then the 9th gen, 06-09 (I think it was) had a LS4 V8. But that wasn’t exactly a corvette engine, but pretty close!
@@AutomotiveAnonymous208 I got a speeding ticket in North Bend, WA in 17. I honestly thought the speed limit was 70mph because I was on I-90, Eastbound, but the speed limit was only 60. Anyway the cop was in an Impala SS. The cop seemed cool so I told him that I’d race him in his worn out Chevy. He then told me that it had the corvette engine. I just laughed and told him that I’d still like to race because I was in our 2010 Tundra 4X4 with the 5.7 V8 and TRD dual exhaust. If he would have agreed, you betcha that I would’ve raced him.
@@AutomotiveAnonymous208 I wouldn’t doubt it for a minute. That truck had endless power, but at 8mpg city and 15mpg on the highway, we simply couldn’t afford to drive it
My cousin had the 2005 impala ss with 5.3 v8 after adding a bigger oil cooler an aftermarket transmission this car would piss off alot of hemi an mustang owners lol.
The 5.3 Impalas actually started for the 06 model year, but likely produced during the end of 05. I use to think the 5.3s were so cool when I had my 3.8 SC. I also use to watch videos of them doing as well or better than the 4.6 mustang and 5.7 chargers lol.
I've been a cab driver for 17 years, and drove lots and lots of Impalas from this generation. They were all pretty crappy, lots of transmission and heating/cooling issues. The Luminas that preceded them were much more reliable, and to be honest GM hasn't made a good car for the taxi/livery industry since. Those Impalas and Malibus from that era were the impetus for the taxi industry to switch to Toyota and Honda and never look back. When this switch happened ,maintenance costs across the fleet were reduced by 50%
Lol, that’s true! But I don’t remember that being a common issue on these when I owned one. I think a leaky oil pan gasket was more common. Ask me how I know lol.
I had two of these. One was a 2003 LS with the 3.8 V-6. The other was a 2005 base model with the 3.4 V-6. Both ran with green coolant, and the Dexcool was removed. Both also were regularly serviced, and both developed intake and head gasket leaks. The power steering racks also leaked and had to be replaced every 3 years. Both also had transmission problems at 70,000 miles, and needed transmission replacements.
You’re right, especially as the general rule of thumb for most vehicles not meant for boost. It’s definitely a rabbit hole. I think I remember reading way back when that the stock block bottom end could usually hold up to around 500hp. And if someone’s going crazy and much further than that they likely would build the engine with stronger or forged internals.
The 5.3’s were definitely much better stock for stock compared to the 3.8 or SC 3.8. But they never got the aftermarket support that they deserved, especially compared to the 3.8s 😬
Did this guy just call that Impala a.....sleeper??? You just took you cred into the red with that blasphemous statement, you was lucky to get these to even start after 3-4 years and really lucky to get the 3.4 water pump to last longer than 3 months without going right back out again because of the terrible engineering of the coolant system. Even if by some off chance or loose definition it could be called a sleeper, as soon as you hit it the key would swing back and turn it off. I guess maybe if by sleeper you mean having to sleep in it because it stranded you somewhere remote then I guess it tracks. In 2015 when the newest model was just 10 years old you would've been hard pressed to find one on the road. Don't say I'm Chevy bashing either cause that's all I have ever bought and I'm a Diehard Chevy guy. You ever hear of the term "Friday car" referring to a lemon inferring it was built on a Friday? That's the only day they built these.
@@AutomotiveAnonymous208 yeah lol, I dont pull punches when it comes to cars and engineering, I dont care what badge it has on it. I mean I guess the engine is solid, but that was negated by the coolant system. If I changed one of those waterpumps, I changed 30 atleast. But if you kept the oil changed and the coolant system operational they lasted but that was rarely achieved. The grand am was fun to drive in the same way a go-kart is, felt light and had a little acceleration. Sounds like this video was more nostalgia than it was about being a sleeper.
I appreciate that! And yeah more nostalgic for sure, especially when we got to how bad that 0-60 actually turned out to be. 😬 One of the most fun passenger cars I’ve ever driven was the 2,000# Mitsubishi Mirage video I posted about a year ago. It also felt like a go kart. But about 2 weeks after I filmed that it was announced that it’s also the car associated with the highest fatalities in accidents haha 🤪 🤕.

I have a 2004 Impala SS Indy I love it. Been nothing but great relaxing rides. L67 is a great simple motor and no issues. Other than the exhaust leak I need to fix and other regular maintenance. She’s good!
That’s awesome!
Hell yea an 04 Indy SS!! Badass as hell those are beautiful and rare af!! I have an 04 Dale Jr supercharged L67 Monte Carlo SS. I'll never let her go. Also bringing home in January an 02 Dale SR L36 Monte Carlo SS. I turned my Dale Jr into a show car and doing the same to the SR. Gonna collect all driver editions, pace cars and then collect the Daytona 500 GTPs and the beautiful ruby red Anniversary model😍😍😍 I also need an 04 Indy Impala SS.
None of the Impalas had the 3100. It was the 3400 on the base. But yes the base GPs had the 3100
Had a stock base model one as a rental car back in the day, for a full week.
@@AutomotiveAnonymous208
Would definitely enjoy seeing a video of that on your channel.
Yeah, I’m sure I’ll know in the next day or two if he’s going to buy it. 🙂
Have an 2000 Ltz. Brought her around 2 year ago with 150,000mi. She now at 168k and, has so much life ahead of her. I’m glad I made my decision.
That’s awesome! Those color matched rear ends are the ones that were tasted as being the “budget GTR” haha.
Actually a well built car. Had one and I’d say it was actually better built than my Camry. Lots of room, good acceleration, and reliable.
That’s an impressive testament! Mine wasn’t super reliable but it had a tough life as a detectives car. 😅
Thanks for sharing and putting the word out I have a 04 LS sport package Impala and a 05 Impala SS supercharged 3800 and a 05 Impala base 3400 too 👍
That’s awesome!! So many times have I thought about buying an 05 SS to build much further than my 02 3.8 was with a basic stock pulley supercharger and bolt ons. 😍
I still have a 2001 3.8L. It was my first car and I bought it 7 years ago for $900 CAD. I can't believe it's still going,
Owned a 2001 Impala LS,wish I still had it. Never gave me any problems. Mine was the 3.4 engine 68k miles no issues just normal service intervals 😢😢
The LS had the 3.8 aka 3800 not 3400. On Monte Carlos the LS was a base with the 3400 but on Impalas the LS was one step bellow the 04 SS being the L36 N/A instead of the L67 SC
My wife's 2005 had over 200000 miles on it when she gave it to our nephew it now has over 250000 on it and still going
That’s awesome!!
same transmission?
The Pontiac Grand am with the 3.4 n/a ran pretty good too.
Yeah, I’ve heard that! And some of them came with those gnarly hood scoops lol.
@@AutomotiveAnonymous208they looked really good with the Ram Air hood scoops on the 3400s. Especially in coupe form
I was born in 1989 so I grew up with all these and man I miss cars from the 90s early 2000s they were so much better in every single way and they weren't infused with planned obsolescence. Play bankruptcy GM was a totally different company from what it is today. They really were the mark of Excellence back then like their slogan went
Great dependable cars, I had 2 3.4s 2002 and 2005 and the 2004 Indy 500 supercharged 3.8. Very good looking car.

That’s really neat! I’ve driven a LS4 MC but haven’t found an available Impala, I’ll definitely film one someday!

great Canadian made car.. im still driving my new 2006 ltz impala 3.9l looking at getting into an outback turbo. is the outback a better highway drive?
Yeah they are! Oh very cool. Yeah, the modern Turbo Outback’s are incredibly smooth and comfortable to strip and traveling vehicles. I don’t have any complaints about mine regarding that. 🙂
I planned on taking the drivetrain out of an 08 ss and dropping into an 05 buick century personally. These cars are badass for what they are
That would be a sick project!
Nice!!!! That twin engine GTP is so sick. That was #goals when I found that video shortly after it came out, lol.
At 10:27 you said the power steering was up too but nah that's tucked underneath the alternator, gotta remove the coolant resivoir to get too it
😭 I miss my '03 3800 Impala LS.
@@AutomotiveAnonymous208 Bought 02 impala 3800. 114k mi paid too much for it.
I paid $1900 for my 04 Impala SS. You can find deals out there
@19shawn85 where do you live because in Atlanta it cost 4500-5k minimum
These Impalas are great first cars! Yeah, take care of necessities before wants. But someday I’m rooting for you to boost it, lol. 😎
I wouldn't call it a sleeper if your gonna show us all modified examples. Anything can be fast with money
That’s a fair point! These engines just had so much potential and at one time about as much after market for performance mods that mustangs or corvettes had at the same time. From what I see online their aftermarket support has definitely died down quite a bit from what I use to see available…😝
3800’s have decent power to start off the gate. Simple shit from ZZP can easily bump it up easily

Ring and bearing clearances are larger on boost prepped engines.
That’s a good point!

The only thing thing that I hate about these Impala was that they only came in Fwd, Image if there was Awd LT, LTZ, SS models even RWD as a option, but for a Fwd it was a good car dependable and could modify for a cheap grocery getter.

@@AutomotiveAnonymous208 no sir it wasn't😂💯
That’s even more impressive, must have been a very healthy 3.8! Kinda crazy that a decade newer 3.6 charger makes 100 peak HP more than the old V6. But you can’t get around all that charger tonnage I guess, lol.
@@AutomotiveAnonymous208 lol facts it might have been the weight difference too
My 3.4 had cat delete and it made it decently fast
That’s awesome!! I wonder if it was getting plugged up by the time you did that.
Do u know about the 5.7 ls1 concept?

The 3.8 was never a "sleeper" by any definition it was a work horse. The 00-05 Impalas were built for longevity not to go fast. 😂
Till that Trans goes out.

LS -4 was something you didn't mention. Still fwd but LS V-8 from factory.
My cousin had one they are pretty dam fast he would embarrass HEMI an mustang owners.
If I remember correctly, the SS had the corvette engine.

I have a 04 with the 3400
👍🏻👍🏻
I've been a cab driver for 17 years, and drove lots and lots of Impalas from this generation. They were all pretty crappy, lots of transmission and heating/cooling issues. The Luminas that preceded them were much more reliable, and to be honest GM hasn't made a good car for the taxi/livery industry since. Those Impalas and Malibus from that era were the impetus for the taxi industry to switch to Toyota and Honda and never look back. When this switch happened ,maintenance costs across the fleet were reduced by 50%
As sad as I am to hear that, I really appreciate you sharing your experience! I know mine had its issues but I definitely enjoyed that as a first car.
we always had crown vics and dodge caravans. one year a '94 caprice. it was a good night if you got 18 mpg off any of em😂
Yeah if the head and intake gaskets did not blow first.
I wouldn't modify a stock one at all... adding aftermarket torbos and superchargers to base stock versions kills them quicker
I crashed mine back in 2013. I own a dodge challenger now. weeeeeeeee

Nothing about this is a sleeper 😂 the SS with the 5.3l is the real sleeper
The 5.3’s were definitely much better stock for stock compared to the 3.8 or SC 3.8. But they never got the aftermarket support that they deserved, especially compared to the 3.8s 😬
The LS is still good I had a 06 Base GP and it moved
Dead stock " nothing done to it" the 1991 1992 Dodge Spirit R/T would be the ultimate sleeper sedan.
