    My first Gibson was a 2005 Studio I still have. Since then I have bought and sold Gibson Custom Shop 58 and 56 Reissues, Traditional, Studio faded etc......each guitar is different but a “good” studio with the pickups you like most will play and sound just as good as any other Les Paul you can buy. The best sounding guitar I have owned was an Epiphone Joe Bonamassa Les Paul with Burstbucker 2 and 3. The neck was beyond huge and I just didn’t enjoy playing it after a while. But holy crap all that Mahogany made a difference.

    I picked up a 2020 Studio, also slim tapper neck, and very quickly became one of my favorite guitars. Might upgrade the pickups in the future, I don't like the neck pickup that much, but other than that, very comfy to play and brings a smile to my face every time.

    Like Bradford Murray below I picked up a 1990 wine red LP studio about 15 years ago and it's one of my fave guitars to play... slim C neck ebony fretboard and all mahogany construction. Singing high tones and a bottom end that shakes the floor boards. One of the best buys I ever made.

  • @bradford_shaun_murray
    @bradford_shaun_murray 2 года назад +6

    I've got an old wine red coloured 1990 Les Paul Studio with an ebony fingerboard I got a few years back. I like it because it sounds as good as some Customs (maybe because of the ebony finger board) and is solid. Has trapezoid inlays. I like the Gibsons from the 1990s.

      Studios and customs have the same pickups. 490R and 498T. I also love 90s LPs. I have a 1993 studio lite (exactly like the one Jerry Cantrell plays in the "Would?" Video) as well as a 1994 studio lite in trans blue. Love them both! They both have 490R and 500T pickups.

    • @Crypticmaskguitar
      @Crypticmaskguitar  Год назад

      To be fair, though... The Customs all have different pickup sets, as do Studios from time to time. Lots of Studios have come with 498T, 490T, Classic 57s.... whereas most Customs come with Custom Buckers, Classic 57s, 498T, Burstbuckers... Pickup choices have variance year to year for the most part. Cheers -Ryan

      @@Crypticmaskguitar sure there are variations of all Les Paul models throughout the years. As I mentioned my studio lites have 500T pickups in the bridge. Since he said his studio sounds as good as some Customs, Its likely due to the fact that they are using the same pickups.

    Yesterday I bought a 2013 white Les Paul studio. I’m left handed. The white ones , especially Left handed are hard to find. The guitar is supposed to be in pristine condition. It’s on its way. I hope I don’t feel it’s overlaquered the way you did. Paid $1,300. Again it’s a 2013 not a 2007 so hopefully I’m good. Great video !

    • @Crypticmaskguitar
      @Crypticmaskguitar  2 года назад +1

      I hope so, too hahaha! It’s a weird feeling. But it can be on a guitar by guitar basis. My ES-335 from 2000 gets that feeling after an hour of playing. Same with my 2021 Explorer… but that’s after a solid hour or more of playing. You can honestly wipe it clean with you sleeve and carry on with life, but it can be annoying! Enjoy the new guitar! Cheers -Ryan

    Your videos are on point! Very informative as usual! Let me ask you what are your thoughts in comparing a Gibson Les Paul Studio vs a Gibson SG Standard? I believe they both have the same pickups. Which do you think are the more geared toward, classic hard rock, i.e., AC/DC, Sabbath, Boston, that kind of music? Thank you.

    • @Crypticmaskguitar
      @Crypticmaskguitar  2 года назад +1

      The SG Standard has 490R/T Pickups, whereas the Studio has 498T/490R. I do have a 2011 Gibson SG Standard Limited that has the same pickups… But the current offerings have different pickups in them. It is a video that I have on my list to make, however, that list is about 300 videos long hahaha. In all honesty you can never go wrong with an SG for that style, but the same can be said about a Les Paul. It’s really up to body thickness, neck preferences, and weight. Cheers -Ryan

    listening on my laptop but they pretty much all sound identical - I would say the studio you played at the beginning sounded the best, had the most bite.. the 60's one you played looked visually like you had to work harder to bend the notes... someone at the office here has a Traditional 60s for sale and I was looking for the difference between that and the studio - one site I read the traditional has dipswitches inside for more tonal control, but that might be a different year? The Studio is marketed as having a wider tonal palette for studio recording, any thoughts?

    • @Crypticmaskguitar
      @Crypticmaskguitar  2 года назад

      Traditional don’t generally have dipswitches. Some of the Standards have them (the weight relieved ones). Traditional were replaced with the new standard 50s. The first studio is an easy player… but not as easy as the standard. The Studio is called a studio because it is stripped down, so you would keep it in the Studio rather than using flashier guitars in a live setting. All of them are comfortable and great players! Cheers -Ryan

    And it's a 2007! Sorry you got a bad one. Seems like there was a lot of inconsistency from Gibby around that time. Anyway, if you get a good one, it can be a beast. I even love my 2015, which almost everybody hates! (I did change the tuners, because it had a robot tuner on it). Im looking for my first Gibson Les Paul. Currently have a custom shop Epiphone Les Paul. I do not know where to start filtering my options. I was thinking of a budget of 1000-1500 and second hand is also an option. Will I find a decent Les Paul for this budget? The "issue" is that my Epiphone just sounds so good! Or is it smarter to save up a bit more? I play 80's metal/hard rock, modern metal but also clean stuff. Bands like Metallica, Iron Maiden, RHCP and Led Zeppelin are just a few for ideas. Any suggestions?

    • @Crypticmaskguitar
      @Crypticmaskguitar  2 года назад

      $1000-1500 is a great start! The big thing is that you NEED to play it before you buy it. If you can look in Music Stores before looking to buy from someone directly, that's probably the way to go. Basically any Les paul will work well with the music type that you are looking to play. The big thing is that you need to be comfortable with whatever you buy. You'll need to find out if you want a Satin or Glossed finish, Neck Profile (Fat or Thin), and of course one of the most important... Weight. Finding a Non-Weight Relieved Les paul that is within your budget on the used market would be AWESOME! I find that they feel better when you are digging in on down picking and feel a little more comfortable and satisfying when you are palm muting. BUT they can be heavy and if you are not used to it... might feel uncomfortable. But the best advice I could give again is: Play them all and figure out what you bond with best... then if it is over your budget look on the used market to see if you can make it work there. Best of luck! Cheers -Ryan

      @@Crypticmaskguitar thank you so much for the information! I never seriously looked into a Gibson before and this is really useful! I have a huge music store a hour drive away with a lot of LP's to try so I will be doing that, see if they have any nice second hand guitars and otherwise keep searching. My current Epiphone also is a bit heavier then most LP's so finding a non weight relieved is the dream! Other then that I don't really have much demands, like you said it is about what I bond with! Quality wise I should be good to go with any LP? Thanks again!

    I have a 13 traditional and an 07 studio. They sound so different to me. The studio doesn’t have as much treble response (probably being all mahogany & chambered) but I get a great tone out of it, especially after upgrading to 500k pots. The traditional fits like a glove in my hand with the big chunky neck and is a beauty to look at. When people say tele on steroids, I know what they mean after owning this beast. I love them both and I don’t think I could part with either one 👌

    you know what I find funny? I've been researching Les Paul guitars to buy one in the next few weeks. What I find funny is most of these guitar reviews have more to do with the paint than the sound. I'm starting to question if I'm paying $1000-$1500 more for a paint job. I just found a Gibson Les Paul Studio that has peaked my interest for $1500 (about 1/2 the price of the Custom I was thinking about). Is the difference really majorly about the paint?? The tone of the Custom and Studio are slightly different, but when you playing punk and metal the effects eat up that little bit of difference. The guitarist for AFI says he prefers the Studio because it's easier to throw around on stage. I will say I've come to the conclusion I prefer the 490/498 pickup to the burst buckers. What's your thoughts?

    • @Crypticmaskguitar
      @Crypticmaskguitar  2 года назад +2

      Are you sure you are reading about “Paint Jobs” and not “Finish”? There’s a big difference. They “Paint” the guitar and then they apply a finish to the guitar. Gibson uses “Nitrocellulose” on their guitars rather than Polyurethane. If there is too much finish applied to the guitar then the finish, especially on the neck, will react with your sweat and it will leave a sort of film on the guitar while you are playing. So for instance… if you play for around 30 minutes it will feel like there is a healthy amount of dead skin on the neck of your guitar. I had quite a few Gibsons from 2007 that exhibited this behaviour and I got rid of them… I have 20 Gibsons now that don’t… as far as Les Paul Studio vs Les Paul Custom… there are customs that are weight relieved, but, My Les Paul Custom is the best best guitar I’ve ever played… hands down! BUT if I were to “Throw Around” a guitar on stage I would definitely want a $1,500 guitar rather than $3,000-$5000 guitar. It’s not just the paint job that is the difference… it’s the weight, ebony fret board, neck carve, binding on the neck, binding on the body (front and back), and the fact that most are “Kissed By God” hahaha Cheers and Happy Hunting -Ryan

    Got a few different LPs, a -73 Recording, modded with slanted Seymour duncans, 3 studios from 91, 95 and 00, a -96 Classic and a -09 Junior. I could live with either one of them. All different from each other... the -95 studio is the favorite though, cant explain why.

      That’s understandable! I was up to 56 guitars… I realized that I change strings twice a year. It cost me $800-900 a year just to change strings! I’m trying to work my way down to 25-30 guitars which is much more manageable! It’s hard to set limits with guitars but it’s a good thing to recognize that things can get out of hand haha! Congrats on the impending new guitar! Cheers -Ryan

    Please can someone help me. I’ve got a 2014 anniversary studio. Are studio’s good les Paul’s. People always seem to go for standards but I haven’t got that sought of money. Is my studio worth upgrading or should I just sell it on????

    • @Crypticmaskguitar
      @Crypticmaskguitar  Год назад

      Biggest question here, and the only one that matters: Do YOU like your Studio? If you do then it doesn’t matter. Studios ARE Les Pauls. Some people look down on it because it is more budget friendly than some other Les Pauls. They don’t have all of the “Bells and Whistles”. But if that doesn’t matter to you then it doesn’t matter. BUT. Depending on the year: Classics and Traditionals were the exact same thing as the current Les Paul Standards. Classics and Traditionals can sometimes be a little more friendly on the wallet. BUT They ARE heavier guitars. Some people aren’t fans of carrying 9-11lbs on a strap. Best thing to do is go to a store and try out as many Guitars as you can so you can form your own proper opinion. I have 13 Gibson Les Pauls… and I definitely consider Studios Real Les Pauls. Cheers -Ryan

      Thank for your reply but I’m still in a bind. I’m not a great fan of studio’s and what gets me is pros never play them they always play standards. No studios no classics or traditional’s. Slash plays a standard but instead of stock pickups he uses different pickups and instead of traditional tuners everyone seems to prefer locking tuners. I’d prefer a original weighted les Paul not weighted relief but what les Paul is traditionally weighted not weight relief. People also changed the tune omatic bridge etc. what’s wrong with the stock bridge. Please if you can answer the questions in this reply!!!!

    • @Crypticmaskguitar
      @Crypticmaskguitar  Год назад

      Few things here: Standards ,for a good 10 years or so, had the same weight relief as Studios. During that time Traditionals were what was known as todays Standard 50s, and Classics (although some still had 9 hole weight relief) were what was known as todays Standard 60s. "Pros" definitely use them. Pickups are a matter of preference. Locking Tuners make for fast string changes and less wraps around the post so tuning stability is increased, but they give a slightly different vibration. Gibson's ABR-1 and Nashville bridges are awesome, not many people change them, unless they are changing the colour of their hardware. Then they go with Tone Pros. As far as which ones are Non-Weight Relieved. You would have to look at the specs year by year. Currently the Standard 50s/60s are Non Weight Relieved. Prior to 2019, the Traditional was the generally the only guitar that was Non-Weight Relieved, aside from a few Classics and believe it or not one year of Tributes. Also... most "Pros" will change the truss rod cover from "Standard" or whatever they are playing to the black truss rod cover with no writing on it. That way people think it might be a Custom Shop. Cheers -Ryan

      I’ve got a 2014 anniversary studio with a coil split system. It’s dessert burst and are they any good. I find it strange as single coil pickups were known for noise problems hence why Humbucker pickups solve the problem. So coil split system is strange gibson fitted coil split on a Les Paul. Pity i couldn’t send you pictures and would admit to if I had the money I’d change it for a standard. I could upgrade it but would it be worth it and I believe it would devalue it. What is your opinion????

    • @Crypticmaskguitar
      @Crypticmaskguitar  Год назад

      Coil split just gives you more tonal options. Standards had them for about a 10 year period. I have them on 3 of my Les Paul’s but don’t use them very often. Yes, your 120th anniversary Studio is a good guitar. But if you don’t like it then that is a different story altogether. It’s not about what other people think of your guitar, it’s about how you feel when playing it. If you think it all comes down to pickups, you could definitely change them. The Studio has a PCB, rather than Hand Wired… so you could look for Gibson Quick Connect pickups and the change would be very easy. Or you could get some wire, capacitors, and new potentiometers and solder in new pickups. Have you played a Standard? If you have and you prefer the feel of that… then I think you already know your answer. Cheers -Ryan
