  • I made a custom section of lattice for a porch to keep the leaves and critters out. The old lattice was 3/8 inch thick which is thicker and stronger than the lattice you find at the big home improvement stores.

I know this is old, but thanks for taking the time to post this. I really appreciate it. Thank you.

I'd love to see the finished product as you installed it. I just tore a bunch of builder's cheapo diamond lattice from the bottom of my porch, I've been looking for how to make square lattice videos, so thank you! I have little woodworking experience, but this looks simple enough even for me! Labor intensive, as you said, but so worth it!

I've got big box trellis that is falling apart after 3 years even after I protected it with an oil finish. I am currently designing new lattice work and will consider your techniques here. Well done!

I notice that in the store bought lattice the staples are folded over at the back like when you staple paper, which makes the joint stronger, are you going get that with your stapler?, do they pull apart?

That is just beautiful! Your so right about keeping the area under the porch safe too. I really don't like the lattice that is connected by those staples either. I did use the vinyl lattice that I thought would be temporary, yet it has been up over 15 years and is still as nice as the day we put it in. I thought of using it again for some planting, and it's not like it used to be. It looks thinner, but I will have to see it in person before I would even consider it again. I really like yours very much, and I also love that it's squares too. What color are you going to stain it? I would love to see it when you finish it. Beautiful work, you have to be proud of it. Oh, and I love that your going to trim it too, that will look perfect. Bless, Sheila

+Sheila6325 I'm staining it a sort of battleship gray. It's a bear to paint once it's all together. I'm wondering it I should have just painted the strips of wood first before putting it together. I spray gun would have been nice too instead of a brush.

NewEnglandgardening Oh wow! I just love gray, it always looks so neat and clean to me. I've also found that it covers more dirt and problems than I ever thought it would. My garage is super white, and I thought it would be a nightmare, but after years of not ever touching it, it still looks wonderful with the exception of some bad spots that were my fault for not moving the dirt when it sunk about an inch or two. Colors can make a huge difference, and change your mind about how they will work too. I think that next time maybe you should paint it first, but I'm quite sure you will paint it perfectly and won't have any problems with it. I'm having another garage built and hope to get it painted gray too, with white trim. It just looks so "right" no matter where it goes. Just hope I can get it started by next fall. Lots of beds to build too. Boy, it never ends huh? LOL Bless, Sheila

I would've subbed if he showed how he ripped down the 2x4's.
But am gonna save the video, because he has some really great ideas on how to assemble the lattice.

Nice job that plastic piece is to stop the gun from denting the wood

I think you low priced it when you said it would have to be priced at $100 but it is another one of those cases where you get what you pay for. Not only will this look much better than the mass produced stuff but it will last many times longer. I see you have attracted a couple of thumbs down trolls my latest video got 8 thumbs down in the first couple of hours then no more that has to be a group plan I guess.

+Dale Calder It was another couple of hours to paint too. A neighbor had some replaced and I was talking to the carpenter and he had to look around before he could find some thicker lattice. Everything's coming down either to Lowes or Home Depot around here and they just wouldn't carry something like this at a price people would be willing to pay. I don't think I've dished out any thumbs down before. It's a RUclips video. I'm not pretending to be the New Yankee Workshop. It's just me putting around in the cellar with available tools.
