Listening is super helpful! I try to listen to trombone music when I first wake up and have breakfast. Get the ears primed. I'm usually listening to some type of music throughout the day. I listen to a pretty wide variety of music. Not just the nerdy stuff. I got to do a lot of listening and part reading when I broke my collar bone and wrist in 2018. Couldn't hold up the horn for about 3 months. I had a lesson yesterday with Oliver Siefert, from the Frankfurt Radio Symphony, and he talked about using a metronome with no sound, just the light. So after relying on the metronome to count for us, turn off the sound and use only the light function to show the tempo. Turn away from it and then turn back later, to see if you're still in tempo.
Thank you for this! I am a bass trombonist currently student teaching and I wish I had more time to play, but most of my time out of school is devoted to working on lesson plans. I've on occasion found myself doing some of these, but I'm gonna try to do so more consistently.
Any mouthpiece recommendations? Right now I’m looking into the Dennis wick 3AL (I’m planning on using this mouthpiece for both tenor and bass trombone. )
Well, for one, I wouldn't use the same mouthpiece on both. They're different instruments! A 3AL can work on tenor trombone, but the modern ones are HUGE and will be really difficult to play. But it's still much too small for bass trombone. A 4BL on tenor and a 1.5G on bass would be my choice to start with.
