  • Samsung has removed MST, or magnetic secure transmission, from the US editions of the Galaxy S21 phone and all future Galaxy phones sold in the US. This feature let you pay at almost any terminal, even ones that don't support NFC or mobile payments.

    I really enjoyed surprising shop owners with the MST payments, when they claimed their machine would need a physical card only. But in Jan 2020, the govt. made EMV chip cards mandatory. So new cards themselves would not have data on the magnetic stripe. Instead they had a chip and NFC too. So the POS machines are also upgraded at a lot of retailers to accept chip cards only and the swipe function was disabled on the POS machine itself. So MST would be useless as the machines would have that function disabled or newer POS machines do not have a swipe feature at all.

    • @HoIyGrail
      @HoIyGrail 3 года назад +27

      Home Depot updated their facilities with new payment systems, a few months back. And they still don't work with NFC. Luckily my note 20 Ultra still works with MST in that situation.

    • @scottls
      @scottls 3 года назад +16

      Cards with smart chips almost always still have the magnetic strip on the back because the smart chip can easily be corrupted if it is pulled out while it is actively being read. (just like a memory card can be corrupted if you yank it out while it is active and not ejected properly) If the chip gives an error code 3 times it will then prompt you to swipe the card instead. Even the Apple Credit card has a magnetic strip on the back.

    • @DigitalM45x
      @DigitalM45x 3 года назад +14

      But the thing with Samsung Pay was that it was smart enough to switch between MST and NFC at a moment's notice. I don't even think it would be possible to find a POS terminal with magnetic swipe turned off as well as NFC

In the end the camera on the S21 Ultra was the deciding factor for me this generation, but with phones being so good regardless of brand now (IMO) I don't understand the rationale behind cutting such a differentiating feature. As it is, I don't have any meaningful incentive to continue to use Samsung Pay.
