    Brown belt here. My game never really clicked until I started learning concepts instead of trying to memorize and drill individual techniques. Learning concepts is the easiest way to fill in gaps and have a more well-rounded game, and Jordan's channel/program is by far the best at explaining concepts and making them easy to understand.

    I first conceptualized wedges bjj mentality, but it’s nice to have it in this format with accompanying footage for sure

    Mate, before I started watching your videos, I felt like I was making very slow progress. Your fundamental videos which teach concepts are flipping bang on. Definitely learn better watching them videos and it shows in my rolls as I have just jumped from 3 stripe white belt to Blue belt. I was more surprised than anyone. Fantastic. Concepts are so much more easier to learn then individual movement/techniques Thank you so much professor 🫡

    I get the concept but I dont necessarily understand how to apply it in different situations. Would you be willing to release a follow up video showing examples of how and when to apply wedges in different positions?

    Great video!! As a Bjj purple belt, I can confirm that this concept makes a huge difference when understood. I use this concept + my frames to control opponents from top more often than not… especially as a smaller guy too. I can’t rely on pure pressure cause I’m not THAT strong and I’m only 140lbs… so frames from the top, as you put it- using wedges, is essential for maintaining control. It’s also extremely valuable for escaping too. All the brown belts and black belts above me do the same shit to me that I do to blue and white belts, just better and more refined. It’s amazing how jiu jitsu IMO* boils down to be more about concepts + positioning as opposed to sequential techniques. Like in a live roll or competitive match… you’re gonna find yourself in scrambles and in positions you didn’t expect to be in, so it’s helpful to understand concepts of BJJ in a more dynamic context, rather than static or linear I suppose. Like instead of a + b = c… think more in terms of probability; example- If I’m in your typical top side control, and they begin to frame and shrimp out, I have X amount of options, which can be summarized into a few categories. I can try to maintain side control (for me this is the least likely thing I’ll do because a) I’m a smaller guy and b) it’s not my style) - I can transition to another top position using windshield wiper motions with my knees and shins, constantly focusing on my wedges & frames (usually frame on the throat with a forearm too). This one I do most often, I usually just transition from position to position (depending on what they are doing) until I can systematically open up an exposed limb or part of their body where I can attack a submission, ideally without sacrificing too much control. Another thing, I could always abandon upper body control completely and enter a leg entanglement… which I’m not great at tbh 😂😭 but hey jiu jitsu is all about self improvement, right?

    The art hasn't changed that much in actuality. The INTEGRITY of instructor grading has changed. Its takes the average practitioner around 550 mat hrs to achieve a purple belt. However, many instructors keep practitioners with 900(+) mats hours in white and blue belts. The former trains 2.5 sessions/wk while the latter trains 7+ sessions/week. Shogun Rua achieved black belt in 4 yrs. Why? Because his instructor was HONEST about what was in front him. This is what changed. Today he'd be a blue belt, and this has now become culturized(accepted as norm). Belts matter if you make them matter.

      Just watch the video over and over again until you understand. Watch it with somebody and ask them questions about it. Go try it; little by little, flatten your opponent and don’t let your opponent flatten you.

    • @DrewD748
      @DrewD748 5 месяцев назад +6

      Its mainly about blocking the frames. Think of the 4 limbs as doors, and your limbs as wedges. If you can get inside their limbs/doors with your limbs/wedges you take inside position and prevent them from either defending (bottom position) or advancing (top position). Also the further your limbs are from your core the less power you have in those limbs, a closed door is more secure than a open door. This is something that is lost on a lot of people, position before submission.
