Just had to swap both bulbs on my 06 325xi, this video was a lifesaver. I have a half-inch drop with 18s and there is barely room to squeeze a hand through with the wheel still on. After watching a few times, doing this by feel was much less daunting, hardest part was disconnecting the actual bulb. THANK YOU for making the time all those years ago to explain everything so thoroughly and methodically. Definitely saved me a few hours of frustration.
That’s awesome. Thanks for the comment! All these years later, I still have the car and love it. I recently rebuilt the entire suspension… installed M3 control arms, sway bar links, new struts and shocks, and replaced the rotors while I was in there. I also had to replace a window regulator in on the back passenger side. 145k miles
@@theXchange my dad owns a 55 reg and it’s still a beauty, also appreciate this video because whoever designed these headlights to be replaced like this must’ve found out their partner was cheating on them because they’re an absolute pain to deal with especially having 18s on😂😂💯
Although you put this out 6 years ago it's the best one I've found that explains it properly for the past 3 weeks I've been having a few minutes each day trying to get the clip off the bulb although mine is 2014 x1 with less room than you had I a last achieved it thank you very much
Looked at maybe 10 tuts on this with dudes taking off the wheel the inside wheel arch the whole nine 🙄 this is by far the best one no bs no having to listen to non related foolishness just straight to the point and excellent camera work, I’m an android user myself but kudos to iPhone on this one. I got to rate this vid a 15 out of 10 🤣🤣🤣 I got the whole thing on first watch, I won’t even need a repeat, think I’ll skip the grease tho lol
Don't Skip the Grease Bro!! I had a BITCH of a time getting the wiring plug OFF the old bulb, I had to pull so hard I thought I would break it. And I work out bro :-) Finally had to remove the metal retaining clip to take the bulb out and THEN used a screwdriver to wedge the plug off the bulb... I have a tiny tube of dielectric grease, you can be sure I dabbed a tiny amount on each bulb plug contact on the new bulb before re-installing. I'll pat myself on the back 5 yrs from now when I am doing this again...
Thanks for the instructions! Worked great on a 2011 328i. Your video was so detailed that I was able to change my bulb quickly and almost entirely by feel. Three items of note that may have been mentioned elsewhere: 1.) Open the hood to let some light into the engine bay and it becomes easier to see what you are doing and 2.) To release the spring that locks the plastic access cover, push straight UP on the spring with a fair amount of force and 3.) To release the spring that holds the low beam bulb, push and hold FORWARD and then slide to the RIGHT (on driver's side anyway) and it then opens easily.
I second Rotek Garcia. I have seen other videos run for less than 5 minutes for the same job, They were OK. But Kris has done a marvelous job focusing on the tabs and clips so well and explaining on how to push the clips and tabs. All with one hand. Bravo. I just got a quote from the dealer for $190 for 2 low beam bulbs. Hope to do it myself. Thanks a bunch Kris. Keep your videos coming
This little tutorial gave me exactly the knowledge I needed to walk into this task. I saw several videos telling me to remove the wheel first. Yes, that would make it easier if changing tires, but in real life practice, NOT. It's sloppy wet snow around here but even so, in a unheated garage at -5c, I got it done in less than 15 minutes. Is there nothing about BMW that is not completely opposed to what you know about cars? Anyhow, this saved me significant time and was totally spot on. BTW, for people exploring DIY, my car is a 321i which seems to be basically an E90 for all intends and purposes; probably the biggest this for me to find videos is by realizing this. Thank you again; consider yourself subscribed to!
You sir, are an absolute GENIUS!!!!! 5 minutes and I was done and it worked! I was shocked I could do it. The guy at Auto Zone said to take out the air filter, battery, etc. he had no clue Thanks so much!!!!!!!
I think BMW is against practicality, never had to ask help before or watch tutorials to change a bulb until this E70, the only difference is that the access to the bulb is from the top and 0 visibility, such a headache! Thanks so much Kris! I learned something today indeed :)
Thanks for this video. The same bulb went on my car last week and i had a quick fiddle from under the bonnet in the car park at work and gave up! This is my first car which has silly access to the bulbs.
Very clear instruction. Thank you! It also worked for my 2008 BMW 328i. If it's difficult unplug the socket, using a long nose plier grabbing and pulling the socket may help. I didn't have problem unplugging the high beam but had to use a plier to unplug the low beam socket. Just be careful not to pull too hard to damage the spring that holds the bulb.
This was excellent and very helpful in getting it done. Doing the work with one hand while videoing with the other ... not easy! One suggestion to make it perfect - when you say "move it over with your thumb" for example, specify the direction of movement (e.g. left, right, up, down). The space was so limited that your hand blocked the movement of your thumb. Thanks again!
Finally I got the bulbs replaced in 1 Hr. took my sweet time. Just a few observations from my personal experience. 1) I have a 2010 328i. The process was easy to replace the driver side bulb since you are using your right hand for the job. Also felt that the access to the opening was 1 inch off (compared to Kris's 325i) based on how Kris was able to access the clips and shine the light 2) The passenger side replacement was relatively hard since you are now working with your left hand. Also it was clear to me that the ease of access to the clips and bulbs was NOT the same as the driver side. I pretty much removed the clips blind with just the feel with my left hand - not too bad. When trying to put the 2 metal clips back, I was literally looking at the ceiling while my left hand did the job. Thanks to Kris's excellent close up shots, I was able to visualize and feel the clips. NOTE: I have 16" inch which means small tires means more room in the wheel well area. For folks with 17 or 18 " rims it might be a tiny bit tighter space to work with. All in all, I spent $35 for a pair of bulbs and 1 Hr of labor time. Well worth it. Thanks Kris
Best video on youtube for this fix. Very well filmed. According to other people takes 20 mins - 2 hours. Took me 5 mins on my first try thanks to this vid - thanks!
Thank you so much for such attention to showing detail. Best do it yourself video I have seen. Very well explained. Don't have enough words. Thank you.
Good deal +Danny Gonzales! Glad it helped! You probably saved yourself a lot of time too unless the dealer is next door ;) Plus it feels good to do these kinds of things yourself.
Thank you so much for this video. You just made my day and saved me a lot of money. I just changed the bulb all by myself. My Dad and my husband will be very proud. :)
Kris, wonderfully clear. If you ever create a video on, instead, replacing the headlight lens assembly, I.e., dropping the bumper, I'd be soooo interested to see it. I'm embarking on this job and can only find sketchy foreign guys (some words I can't understand) who skip steps and such. I'm scared to embark on the repair with the quality and quantity of videos I have seen so far. These bulb lens boxes go after awhile. Mine did at 108k miles. Thanks.
+Jonathan Reed I just surpassed 108k on mine, so if I have to replace the headlight lens assembly, I'll definitely create a video to document the replacement! Thanks for the comment!
Kris Reese kris, I did locate a 16 year old in mass talented with cars... after watching his video yesterday I did the big repair... I got it done successfully. I went ahead and not only replaced be faulty lens assembly on the drivers side but the 2 fog lights. All very reasonable oem parts at autohausaz. I had a fried socket in the lens assembly. I did break one of the lens washer caps... stupid because one other video suggested removing them and there was no need. I saved 1100 on this repair alone.
Thank you very much, one light stopped working and I have a planned trip tomorrow, so today was the last chance to repair it and I did it, thanks to you!
I’m glad you thought to do it for yourself! That’s what it’s all about (saving some cash), especially for these simple fixes. Air and cabin filters are just as easy!
Thank you so much good sir for this tutorial, super clear instructions, and great filming showing all the important bits. Six-year-old video and it's still the best one on here!
Good video and instructions thank you. I had to remove the wheel well covers to access the high beam on the 325xi. The right side was the most difficult to replace.
This is an excellent video. It allowed me to successfully change the bulb on my 2011 328i X-Drive, left headlamp. I was surprised to note that the door/hatch is pretty much above the tire, so that turning the wheel as far as it can go helps somewhat but the whole space is still very small--I could barely get one hand in to do the various steps. The hardest part for me was removing the wire clamp which holds the bulb in place. I had to use needle-nose pliers to make that work. I could never have done it without this very helpful video.
Excellent! thank you for this, I saw so many videos where they take the entire wheel and the wheel well cover off, this is much better and clearer on how to change the DLR bulb. I was going to book the car into a garage, but after watching this video, I'm going to order the bulb and try it myself on the weekend. My car is a 2007 E91 335D pre-lci, fingers crossed.
This was awesome!! Took me a while to figure out how to take out the power plug until I watched this video and gain the confidence to tug and pull it out. Didnt even need to take off the tire!! Saved me so much time and money. Thanks!
Perfect video. You can see the temple exactly. It is very important how it clicks into place. Amazingly, I had problems with my e90 after changing the bulb. Even though the bulb was sitting perfectly, I had to lower the headlight. Thank you for the helpful video.
Great job. Very helpful and I am the most un-handy person on earth! took about 20 mins and that is with time going back to this step by step. Thanks again for posting!
haha i did actually drop the little cap and rememberd you saying it wouldn't be a fun day so i panicked but then i opened the hood and easily found it and picked it up. thank god. thanks for the video mate. very helpful and detailed. god bless ya
Ah seriously the thanks should all be from me! From my previous cars I had nightmares about needing to take off the front headlight mounting to change the bulb, so seeing your guide on how easy it is saved me a fair bit of cash. I really liked that you said what not to do as well as what to do, as it's easy to follow these 'perfect' guides and then make a mistake because you're not sure what to look out for. Thanks again.
I’ve wasted almost 1.5 hours trying to remove this connector from the globe 2:45. I’ve tried wiggling, I’ve tried twisting and pulling I’ve even tried with pliers. Is there anything that I’m Doing wrong? It does not want become detached at all. Would appreciate any help or tips guys.
thanks this was really helpful - I ended up doing part through the hole and other part from the top ... because once my hand was in the hole I could not see anything anymore... so the combo worked out good - it was pretty tough to the the connector off, but rest was fine - thanks again
Damn I wish I'd seen this video before I changed mine! I had no idea about the little access hatch so did them blind from above. Was real easy to get them out but took about an hour each to get the bulb retaining clips back on! My back was shot from leaning over and my knuckles were all cut up! Great video thanks.
Just bought a 330i after being a benz guy for so long and i was so confused when having a bmw, found this video and realized how simple it actually is 😂
sounds like I should do a video on the high beam :) I’ll see if I can get that done before I take mine in for repair. My oil pan gasket needs replacement and that’s a very involved job. Costs $1100 or so 😬
Thanks. Yea, it’s a really involved job, and therefore expensive. I’ve decided to go ahead and have it done though. I’ve been rolling around with it leaking for years. It’s just time. I also need to replace my suspension system. I can upgrade to the M3 system and pay $1400 for all the parts and put them in myself, but winter is upon us, so I’m just doing the back with OEM parts for $212. Saving a ton by doing it myself. Dealer wants more than 1 grand to do just the backs. A specialize BMW repair shop in my area quoted $650. Anyway, my car is in the shop now getting the oil pan gasket replaced + brake fluid flush. I’ll see about doing a vid when I get it back, though I really need to work on the rear shocks. Back one blew completely and knocks like crazy. It’s leaking all over the place!
Great video! Thanks! I do have a question (perhaps you have the answer): If you stop the video on 2:44, how do you call that black headlight connector holding the 3 cables that you just unplugged? Mine just burnt out so I need to replace it. Thanks again Kris!
I was struggling and managed really well with this beautifully clear and detailed presentation. By the way my car had a little access panel which allows you to reach inside the bumper if you drop something into it as I did
Brilliant video, I'd never have done this so fast using my Haines manual. Out of interest does anyone know why the replacement bulb isn't as bright as the original? I got two for £16 so cheap ones, are the brighter originals still labeled "H7" with 477 underneath or are the brighter ones sold under another code?
Thank you so much for the tutorial on how to replace the headlight bulb on my BMW E90,I did it successfully and thanks to this wonderfully easy video👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾
I don't have another video, nor have I seen the same model with a different cover. If there is an access hatch, the innards should be much the same (if not exactly the same since you have the same year model as shown in the video). Perhaps start out by removing that cover and see if everything else matches up.
Great great video! Very calm and explained everything well. Really no need to remove a tire 🤦🏾♂️. Best tutorial video on E90 by far, super thumbs up👏🏾💪🏾🙌🏾.
Should be very similar. The internal wiring mechanism will likely be different, but over all accessing of the headlight compartment should be the same.
Thanks Kris....appreciated. I need to find one of those aftermarket clear lens covers. Mine is damaged. They make them for a lot of BMWs, but having a problem finding one to fit my E90 2008 335xi sedan with Xeon adaptive headlights......I gave you a sub...
Very well done. You must need to make another copy of this video, you can use my 328i and shoot the video twice, one for each side. Seriously, thank you. It was a nightmare to replace the one, I think the other side will go better.
good question. I’m not 💯 on that. I kept my car stock. You might want to check some of the e90 user forums out there. A lot has changed with LED since I last thought of doing the same but with Xeon head lamps.
I can’t really say for certain as I am not familiar with tavott. If it’s like a WD40, then I’d surmise it would be okay, but I would use very little. I went a little too liberal in my video even though it’s not going to hurt anything by applying too much.
Just had to swap both bulbs on my 06 325xi, this video was a lifesaver. I have a half-inch drop with 18s and there is barely room to squeeze a hand through with the wheel still on. Great video. Question for you. Will all this work on my 2008 bmw 328xi? Thank you
yes - it should be much the same if not identical!
Your video was great. I was procrastination at first not knowing it would be so easy! Your video was realistic to what I experienced. Life saver!
+Dale Gates Thanks for the comment! Glad it helped!
Damn I wish I'd seen this video before I changed mine! I had no idea about the little access hatch so did them blind from above. Was real easy to get them out but took about an hour each to get the bulb retaining clips back on! My back was shot from leaning over and my knuckles were all cut up! Great video thanks.
This video was great. Thanks for taking the time to make it.
Thanks. You’re welcome
My 328xi 2008 coupe doesn’t have that first little panel...it’s just all one panel..help?
Just bought a 330i after being a benz guy for so long and i was so confused when having a bmw, found this video and realized how simple it actually is 😂
Welcome to the good side. There are a lot of things that can be repaired in a DIY fashion with binmers and one can save themselves $$$ by researching.
Kris, great video! I replaced mine in about twenty minutes today.
Thanks Dave! Glad everything went well!
Where can I access my high beams? I want to change those as well but I can't find a video on that. Great video btw!
sounds like I should do a video on the high beam :) I’ll see if I can get that done before I take mine in for repair. My oil pan gasket needs replacement and that’s a very involved job. Costs $1100 or so 😬
I would appreciate it if you could! Man that sucks. I've heard its pretty difficult to change the oil pan gasket yourself. Hope it goes well tho!
That would be the headlight socket. You’ll frequently find Dorman brand in auto parts stores or even on Amazon. Help that helps!
Thank you for making this. It was very easy to follow!
+niceguyrecords np! Glad it helped!
Thank you so much! I did it all by my self with the help of your video. I'm so proud of myself!
Glad to hear it!
That is helpful 💡 is it same process with the E90 facelift/xenon?
I just changed the light bulb thanks to your video. God bless you.
Great to hear! Thank you 🙏
Is this process similar to changing it on a BMW F30? I have a 2013 BMW 328i. Please reply ASAP thanks.
I was struggling and managed really well with this beautifully clear and detailed presentation. By the way my car had a little access panel which allows you to reach inside the bumper if you drop something into it as I did
👍🏻 glad it all worked out. Thanks for watching!
EXCELLENT Video!! Well detailed and saved me hours and $$$$$ !!1 Thanks Kris!
Awesome! Glad it helped
Thank you by far the best video on how to do this job on an e90......but that was allot of grease!
+Shishu Ali yup on the grease but it’s okay to be liberal in this case! Thanks for the comment!
thank you so much this is gong into my fav archides. this is one of a few best vids on youtube. quadruple thumbs up
good deal! I'm glad it was helpful to you. Thanks for the comment!
Perfect! Thank you
You can't get more accurate than this, thank you bro!

Thank you so much for the tutorial on how to replace the headlight bulb on my BMW E90,I did it successfully and thanks to this wonderfully easy video👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾
awesome! I’m glad it was helpful!
Superb effort. Excellent camera work & guide! Thanks.
Thanks!
This is the best video of how to perform this! THANK YOU!
You’re welcome!!
My car is 2006 BMW 325i and has a different cover to get to the headlight any help with that? Is there another video?
I don't have another video, nor have I seen the same model with a different cover. If there is an access hatch, the innards should be much the same (if not exactly the same since you have the same year model as shown in the video). Perhaps start out by removing that cover and see if everything else matches up.
Great video and easy to follow; i changed the light with no problem. Thanx and greetings from México.
+César Carranza you're welcome! Glad it helped
Its a life saver.. thank you very much for your time and efforts for this wonderful video.!
You’re welcome!!
Thinking about getting a 320i and was wondering about changing the bulbs;
this is a million times better than replacing them on my Ford :')
Does this method also apply if I have the Xenons?
process would be similar, yes. see if this helps you: ruclips.net/video/ipGMr2ZemQE/видео.html
Thanks for the vid, I took off fine, but little metal hinge piece came loose and I was putting it backwards. Appreciate the help.
Yup. lol. I did the same once before!
Great and informative video, saving money and time ..... many thanks ...
Glad it helped you out. You’re welcome!!
Great great video! Very calm and explained everything well. Really no need to remove a tire 🤦🏾♂️. Best tutorial video on E90 by far, super thumbs up👏🏾💪🏾🙌🏾.
thanks!
Super like. Thanks Kris for the video. Very clearly explained the procedure. I was able to replace the headlamp in 15 minutes.
Awesome! Thanks for watching.
Excellent info and clear instructions
Is this for the bulbs of the center? Engel eyes? I’ve a ring off on one side
This process is not for angel eyes. Standard headlights for low beam only.
Helped me out a ton! Awesome video man… 🤝
Great! Thanks for the comment!
Is this the same procedure for replacing a Xeon Headlight as my E90 car (2008 335XI) has the Xeon Adaptive headlights...Thanks....
Try bavauto.com, and thanks for the sub!
Hey thanks for the link...appreciated............................Philip
Best tutorial video i ve seen, helpful, thank you!
Very well done. You must need to make another copy of this video, you can use my 328i and shoot the video twice, one for each side. Seriously, thank you. It was a nightmare to replace the one, I think the other side will go better.
Thank you. I’m glad the video was helpful and let me know how the other side pans out!
It's the exact same thing with *318i* *2008*, right?
High beam bulb number ?? H11 or h7
Is it more difficult to change from basic Bulb to LED? Is there a fuse or relay i have to change?
good question. I’m not 💯 on that. I kept my car stock. You might want to check some of the e90 user forums out there. A lot has changed with LED since I last thought of doing the same but with Xeon head lamps.
Thanks for the video, however on my 2007 E91 330d iwas able to do the change from above. However, your video had some helpful information.
thanks a lot man very helpful 👍 🙏
Ty my man. Just worked for e90 LCI with halogens.
No problem!!
hey i've got a guestion... could the plug grease can be replaced by a tavott (known in eastern europe as universal grease/lubricant)
thanks
I can’t really say for certain as I am not familiar with tavott. If it’s like a WD40, then I’d surmise it would be okay, but I would use very little. I went a little too liberal in my video even though it’s not going to hurt anything by applying too much.
@@theXchange it's a thicker lubricant, suitable for lubricating bearings etc. thanks for a honest reply.
no problem! It sounds like it would be okay to use.
