My favorite episode where Opie is the main theme was the Mr. McBeevie episode. When Andy says towards the end that he didn't believe Opie was telling the truth, but that he believed IN HIM. It was an amazing moment. And when Andy goes out into the woods to think and meets Mr. McBeevie I actually cried the first time I saw it.
My favorite is season 1 episode8 when Opie only gives 3 cent.lol Andy ask Opie if he every give any one anything that he enjoyed and he said yes a sock to the head.and Andy was trying to teach him about the value of giving and he said it broke down to a boy and a half Opie said he had never seen a half a boy.funny to me lol
Lots of good child actors in history, but I think when you look at the fact that he had recently turned 6 years old (barley 6!) when he started with TAGS, and the type of scripts and level of true complexity on the show, it's safe to say he was the best child actor. And he was perfect in every show, very convincing. Move on to Happy Days and American Graffiti and you'll see how truly talented Ron was/is.
I recently met a fellow who was in charge of acquiring authentic boxing props for Cinderella Man. He had nothing but praise for Ron Howard. He said he was a prince of a guy.
I'm so proud of little "Opie" growing up to be a real life hero to so many of us, by attaining so much success while becoming one of the great men of our times. Never involved in anything corrupt or scandalous and treating everyone with nothing but kindness and love. Beautiful human being.
I agree but I get the same from watching the Walton's. I don't know if it's really the '30s I'm nostalgic for or because it takes me back to the '70s when I first watched the show.
One of my favorites was the episode where Andy eats crow. Opie didn't give enough to charity. Andy got upset and lectured Opie on the value of giving. At shows end Opie says he was saving his money to buy a coat for a classmate who was poor.
When I was a child before I even started school my mother and I would walk to the mom and pop grocery store after she finished her morning cleaning. We would walk back home and eat a candy bar and drink Pepsi out of glass bottles while watching the Andy Griffith show. This is one of my most fondest memories of my childhood.
So many great episodes...my personal favorite was the bird episode. When he accidentally killed the mama bird it was sad and tragic. You could feel the pain and turmoil. You could feel the disappointment in his dad. But then Opie decides it’s now his responsibility to take care of those starving little birds and he raises them. It shows maturity, responsibility, love and determination. Great episode
Man in a Hurry is the #1 episode in a major poll. The episode combines so many excellent components of the show -- Opie's relationship with his Dad, Barney's silliness, Aunt Bea's graciousness and Gomer's gullible yet sweet disposition.
I remember right after they finish singing on the porch, Barney repeatedly says how he plans to go to Thelma Lou's to watch TV, and annoyed Tucker yells, "Will you just do it!' Hilarious. One of favorite episodes too and It was also Jim Nabors debut as Gomer on the show.
@@stephenthoren2571 I could easily understand why it would be rated best, because this episode portrayed the elements that made small town Mayberry appealing. Although Tucker, a businessman from the big city, is initially frustrated over the town's lack of efficiency and technological resources in resolving the problem of getting his car fixed, once he interacts with the Mayberry citizens -- with as you say, "Aunt Bea's graciousness and Gomer's gullible yet sweet disposition," as well as Andy's magnanimity and even Opie's small but caring heart -- he realizes that the simple but endearing pleasures of living in a small town, coupled with the genuineness of its people, far outweigh the inconvenience of its primitive technology. He is so moved by it that instead of returning to the city to meet a deadline, he extends his stay in Mayberry.
The best Opie-centered episodes: 1) Mr. McBeevee. 2) The bird, 3) Opie stands up to the bully, 4) Keeper of the Flame. Drunk Barney saves the day! 5) The outsider: Opie is jealous of Andy's girl friend, Peg. Opie kicks her note into the trash can so Andy doesn't see it.
One of my favorite scenes featuring Opie is when Opie tries out tactics given him by a spoiled kid to get his own way: He asks for a raise in his allowance, and when Andy turns him down, holds his breath. Andy finally notices, and asks: "What are you doing?" Opie, tight-lipped: "I'm holding my breath!" Andy: "Oh. Good lung exercise." Opie lays down on the floor, rolls around, crying. Andy: "What are you doing now?" Opie: "I'm throwing a fit!" Andy: "Oh...Well, don't get your pants dirty"...Heh...
The best part to me is in the end when the dad realizes that he has indeed spoiled Arnold rotten and Andy says to him, "Would you like to finish your talk with Arnold outside in the woodshed?"
I see the entire series as a work of art and interpret it as a whole. Saying what my favorite episode is would be like saying what part of the Mona Lisa I prefer. No single part of it is a masterpiece - but, taken as a whole, it is. The magic of the Andy Griffith Show is the world it paints in your imagination. I've seen all the episodes enough times I could just about recite them. I can watch the series from start to finish and never feel like skipping an episode.
ha, my favorite is the MEDICINE MAN, where Aunt Bea and her cronies get drunk on his medicine, especially the part where she is twirling on the piano stool...WHat an incredible actress she was!
Through the decades, in innumerable interviews and public appearances, Ron Howard never failed to prove himself to be one of the nicest, most likable, most reasonable and generous of men. What a joy it has been to have known him.
One of my favorites is the one where there's blasting for a highway to run near Mayberry, and a goat winds up eating a couple cases of the dynamite that's being stored near the Courthouse. And, everyone's scared the goat might "go off". So, it's up to Andy & Barney to find a solution.
Ron Howard seems like such a decent, down to Earth guy possessing a rational percipience quite at variance with someone who was born and raised in show business.
One of my favorite scenes was when Opie tried to break up his pa and girlfriend because he felt Andy wouldn't want him around one day. The way Andy assured him that that would not happen just melted my heart.
The bird story Ron is referring to was titled, “Opie The Birdman”...Season 4/Episode 1....Opie accidentally kills a mama bird with a slingshot....in that scene, Ron cried real tears as he thought of his pet dog, Gulliver, who years before had been hit by a car and killed...the episode is regularly ranked in the TOP 10 TAGS episodes of all time with TV Guide ranking it 2nd...just watched it tonight on TV LAND....very very touching episode
There are too many good episodes to say which is my favorite 🤔 I love every episode 😍 Ron Howard was so adorable and now a remarkable and successful man,I'm so proud of the path he took 👍
That was just the tag at the end of the show. I'm surprised he would call this episode his favorite. Maybe it was because his dad inspired it. But it was in the later part of the show after Don left and the show was going downhill.
So many great ones, but I like the one where they let Otis be sheriff so he can impress his family when they come visiting. I also like the one where Buddy Ebsen plays an old hobo and impresses the kids. Lastly, the one where Floyd pretends to be Andy's father to impress a penpal woman who comes to visit- absolutely hilarious. Such a well written show and Andy and Barney are timeless together.
My favorite moment of the whole series was a line delivered by Opie at the end of an episode. Throught the show, he was taking advice for a new kid in town, a spoiled rich kid who learned how to manipulate his parents through tantrums. At the end after the spoiled kid was punished, Andy has a talk with Opie who had been emulating the boy. Andy says "Don't you think he deserved to be punished?". And Opie replies, "I don't wanna say on account of... he's one of my own kind." That right there was probably one of the funniest moments in all of television. So well delivered!
This is one of my favorite episodes. When Opie visits Andy at work and pulls every trick in the book but says each time, so matter-of-fact, what he was doing. Love Opie, love this show!!
Maybe you're right. I do know that Gary Coleman's parents exploited him financially, which undoubtedly led to the issues he had as an adult. And Danny Bonaduce's father, a frustrated TV screenwriter, out of jealously abused Danny as a child, which was probably why he became so erratic during his adulthood.
I recall reading an interview somewhere that Danny said his home life during the Partridge Family years was very tumultuous. The abuse from his dad became so intense that at times he had to live with Dave Madden, the guy who played Reuben Kincaid on the show.
My favorite Andy Griffith was season 1 episode 8 where Andy was mad at Opie for only giving 3 cent for the children fund and Andy ask Opie something like if he ever gave something to someone and enjoyed it Opie said yes he gave this little boy a sock to the head and Andy was like no something you really enjoyed and Opie said I really enjoyed it lmfao something to that affect look it up.it was the funniest episode to me lmao
That interaction between Andy and Opie also features the hilarious misunderstanding over "a ratio" and "Horatio." Whoever wrote that scene was brilliant.
My favorite too. I particularly liked the dialogue where Andy is trying to explain “ratio” to Opie. I have it saved on my DVR and viewed it many times. Both Andy and Ron are great.
@@erickibler901 thats another favorite it was a funny episode.and the one were Andy told Opie that history was hard snd then Opie went to school and manipulated everything andy had said. I believe it was season 3 episode 4 or 5 I cant remember now.
Much love Ronnie! I sometimes call my cat Opie, just because he's red. He's a BIG orange/ red tabby and his real name is Arthur. We watch Andy everyday at 7 pm. Me TV!!
When Opie didn't give enough to charity. Best Opie episode for me. He told pa that he didn't leave any apple for the worm (when talking about sharing). Still makes me laugh
I remember the baseball episode quite well. Not only was Opie disappointed in his dad for calling him out, but everyone else -- Aunt Bee and all of the town locals -- turned against Andy as well. The interesting thing about this episode was that it marked the debut of Howard Sprague who played a columnist on a Mayberry newspaper, and wrote a commentary defending Andy's actions and praising him for not being biased toward his son.
My favorite episode was Opie found a money purse with $50. Andy told him, if no one claims it you can keep the money . Opie waited anxiously for the time limit to expire. He bought a fishing rod, but found out who had actually lost the money. Andy knew too, but couldn’t break the news to Opie. Opie returns the fishing rod to give the money back.
I remember watching that episode. Andy was determined to be in impartial official on this game, and at the end of the episode, they showed a picture someone had snapped that showed Opie was safe.
My very favorite episode is when Ernest T. Bass drags Barney away dressed as the bride while the preacher quickly marries Dud Wash and Charlene. My next favorite and close second is the Dill Pickle Story. "Them Kerosene Cucumbers."
All the episodes with Briscoe Darling and his family were hillarious. And, Howard Morris as Ernest T Bass...What a True Talent he was. I just watched Ernest T Bass Joins The Army. 😂😂👌😂😂📺
My whole family was very affected by the 'bird' episode in the Andy Griffith show. Opie was so convincing as a heartbroken kid, we were all so involved!
I think you're referring to the first episode - not counting the pilot. It's the episode where they introduce Aunt Bea and she accidentally leaves the cage open. It was on just a few days ago.
One of the saddest shows (for me) was when Barney returns to Mayberry on the same train as a local girl who was a starlet. When Barn saw all the crowd at the station, he thought they were waiting for him. He even had a speech ready.
I think that the grown-up stuff offered to kids already dizzy from the changes in their lives is actually a form of torture. My girls were invited to a couple of parties in Hollywood when they were young, and were so disgusted with the young people they were anxious to meet and to like that they never were tempted to return. Like every other child trying to grow up in a confusing world, it takes parents who "just say no" to keep the boundaries safe until it is time to see them on their way to reasonable adulthood.
It was innocent entertainment but when interviewed Andy noted that there was lesson in every episode to be learned. We could use some more of that today instead of mindless one liners
Wow Ron, I could see that would be a very hard thing for a father to do. Immense conflict for both the parent and the child. I've always enjoyed you. I like your work. Thank you for your contribution. Take care and be well.
What's great is that his dad thought it was funny that he was upset, no doubt he was a caring and thoughtful man, but he wasn't a coddler. Which is why both him and Clint have turned out so well. No doubt they're passing those same values to their own kids, and on it goes.
i cant get andy to stop crying. that was a favorite part.or citizens arrest when barney says it is priceless. asking the question what is your favorite show or moment could drive you crazy. some are funny and some hit you heart so hard it just about knocks you over.so i think every part of that series is golden.
My favorite one is when aunt bea gets drunk. .lol And when Otis the town drunk has to stay at their home and she puts him to work. .the rock. ..lol My favorite with Opie is Keeper of the Flame. .and The one where Andy gets mad at him for only putting in 3 cents for charity but Opie was saving his money to buy a coat for a girl that didn't have one. .. The Andy Griffith show is the best. .all of them ,but I have to admit that the first 4 or 5 seasons with barney were the best. .HELLO DOLL
The best Opie-centered episodes: 1) Mr. McBeevee. 2) The bird, 3) Opie stands up to the bully, 4) Keeper of the Flame. Drunk Barney saves the day! 5) Opie is jealous of Andy's girl friend, Peg. Kicks her note into the trash can so Andy doesn't see it.
Shhh!! He's too ignorant to realize F1 ran on the 13 turn road course at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway from 2000-2007? And since they ran in a clockwise instead of counterclockwise direction the main turns on the oval that were incorporated into the road course were right turns for the F1 races held there.
Ron's talking about F1 and Larry's talking about NASCAR...Ron gives him a look when Larry says "the endless left turn" and realizes Larry is loose in the marbles (NASCAR term).
Hahaha....The look on Ron Howard’s face was classic when the conversation was about F1 and at the conclusion Larry King makes the comment about the “endless left turn”. Ron Howard the professional that he is, doesn’t say anything, but the WTH look on his face made me laugh.
I like that they, particularly Andy is always looking out for others' feelings. He doesn't want to see anyone get hurt. He'll even make Barney look good when he had nothing to do with it. Andy is sometimes quite naive but other times level-headed. I've seen every episode hundreds of times. There's definite references to Opie "give me a whippin'" which is surprising. I can't see Andy spanking Opie. The rich kid got whipped by his dad in the woodshed out back of the jail. Andy said he deserved it. And all the smoking by Andy.
I have 2 faves, Man In A Hurry, for SO many reasons, but great episode (and Opie got to sleep on the ironing board between 2 chairs!!!). and the other is where Gomer sings Santa Lucia. Need kleenex for both.
(Spoiler Alert). To finish the story about Ron’s favorite episode…at the end of the show Helen visits Aunt Bee and they begin going through some photographs Helen shot at the baseball game. When they come to a photograph of Opie crossing Home plate it is clearly evident that Opie was indeed safe. They look at each other a moment, then tear up the photo. Great ending! It’s one of my favorite as well.
My favorite episode was when Opie accidentally killed a mama bird with his slingshot. This episode has always made me cry due to Ronnie Howard's great acting skills even as a young child. This was very a heartwarming episode
Okie grew up on the Andy Griffith show there are several shows Ron as Opie stood out I loved the McBeevee episode I also like the first episode when Aunt Bee Came to live and Rose left but the most memorable for me is when Opie and Ellie the drugiest are getting to know each other she goes to clean the Door Windows and when she wipes away the grime there is Opie peering in on here and boy he sure wants an ice cream cone because he Ain't got no money he can't have it so Ellie makes a deal with young Opie you don't say Ain't no more and I'll give you the ice cream well he had to tell his PA I got the ice cream cause I said I'm not going to say ain't no more so I'm not going to say ain't no more that was classic
Mark Williams was MR Mcbeeve the one where the guy was fixing power lines? Opie said he jingles in the trees and no one believed him? One of my favorites!! :-)
Who can ever forget kerosine cucumbers? Or Barney trying to teach Goober about how to date a woman by spying on Andy and Helen? “Pipe down this isn’t a ballpark!” LOL
The Best TV Show Ever, with all due respect to Seinfeld, I Love Lucy and The Office. My mother and I watch Andy Griffith almost every night. She’s 85 and I’m 58. . . It’s ok. Go ahead and comment. I can take it.
My favorite and most touching episode was OPIE'S DRUGSTORE JOB (season 8). But now that RH mentioned the baseball episode @1:12, l will watch that on my DVD with more interest.
The Fun Girls from Mt. Pilot, The Lady Speeder... “ You know something Deputy? You bear an amazing resemblance to Frank Sinatra.” She drives off and Barney says to Andy,” One thing you can say about this case.. it was a gas”😎
This reminds me when my older brother was umpiring my game behind home plate and he called strike three on an obvious ball 4 and he laughed all the way home while I was crying! hahaha Typical older brother!
He didn't say anything at all about Indy cars. He said he watched Formula 1 at Indianapolis. Your uninformed comment shows you know absolutely nothing of the history of Formula 1 in the United States. The Formula One World Championship raced at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway from 2000-2007 in the United States Grand Prix at Indianapolis. F1 competed on a 13-turn, 2.605-mile road course at IMS that run clockwise - the opposite direction of the oval events - and incorporated the iconic front straightaway, a newly built infield road section, the short chute between Turns 1 and 2 of the oval and Turn 1 of the oval.
Reading the comments...so many to chuckle over. The Andy Griffith Show was one of the very best. Ever.

Barney's reaction at the end of that is priceless too.

I truly believe that Ron Howard was the best child actor ever and what a terrific guy. A real success story.
He was a very good actor for his age, but I think Melissa Gilbert was no slouch either.

Ron Howard. God bless you. I grew up watching your show.
My condolences go out to you, Mr. Ron Howard, on the loss of your father. Your father died the same year as my father... 😔
Good to see a child actor [really] beat the odds. Why do so many child actors become dysfunctional where as Ron Howard became a stunning success?
Bee Man It's all about the parents. He was lucky. He had good ones.
It was because Ron as an adult wisely chose directing over acting. Typecasting is the reason why many child stars are unable to find work as adults.
If he had become typecast, he would not have gotten any more acting work in Hollywood. That's the point.
Maybe you're right. I do know that Gary Coleman's parents exploited him financially, which undoubtedly led to the issues he had as an adult.
I think every dad could learn fatherly lessons by this show. I love how he fathered
Episodes with "Ernest T Bass" were so funny
Ron Howard = 100% pure talent!
Actually I meant the one when Opie is carless with his slingshot and kills a mother bird. Andy makes him look after the babies.
Yes, that episode where he kills the bird is called "Opie the Birdman". Andy Griffith said that was his very favorite episode.
Never saw that one and I thought I had seen them all...
Lee Sher
Its the most iconic episode!
A ratio/Horatio is one of my favorites. "A half a boy"
My favorite.
Poor Horatio
I'm trying to think of my favorite episode of Opie in Andy Griffith, but I don't have any. There were all great episodes, all of them
One of the saddest shows (for me) was when Barney returns to Mayberry on the same train as a local girl who was a starlet. When Barn saw all the crowd at the station, he thought they were waiting for him. He even had a speech ready.
"Alright Lefty, you and me's busting out tonight"
When Barney gave the prisoners crafts to keep them busy and one of them made a key from metal kit.
My favorite is “Barney’s first car”.
My two favorite Andy Griffith episodes are "Barney & The Choir" and "The Pickle Story."
Kerosine cucumbers! LOL!
His parents did such a good job raising him.
How is Ron Howard to work with? He seem like such an awesome director and so real, love him.
I remember him saying that as a director, the once scene that took massive work but he is proudest of is the launch scene in Apollo 13.
What's great is that his dad thought it was funny that he was upset, no doubt he was a caring and thoughtful man, but he wasn't a coddler. Which is why both him and Clint have turned out so well. No doubt they're passing those same values to their own kids, and on it goes.
Why can't we have some tv shows now like the ones from the 60's. .
Just 2 or 3. ..I bet they would be hits
i cant get andy to stop crying. that was a favorite part.or citizens arrest when barney says it is priceless. asking the question what is your favorite show or moment could drive you crazy. some are funny and some hit you heart so hard it just about knocks you over.so i think every part of that series is golden.
My favorite one is when aunt bea gets drunk. .lol
And when Otis the town drunk has to stay at their home and she puts him to work. .the rock. ..lol
My favorite with Opie is
Keeper of the Flame. .and
The one where Andy gets mad at him for only putting in 3 cents for charity but Opie was saving his money to buy a coat for a girl that didn't have one. ..
The Andy Griffith show is the best. .all of them ,but I have to admit that the first 4 or 5 seasons with barney were the best. .HELLO DOLL
Opie asked what are we having for dinner you and aunt bee are having fried chicken n me I'm having crow
Yeah F up he should of ate his breakfast right away n then go too back too sleep lol
“Hi, Bernie” 😂
"Here at the Rock we have two basic rules. Memorize them so you can say them in your sleep..."
"never call my son out" thats why we are where we are
Hey Larry, the endless left turn is a term used to describe NASCAR not Formula One.
Man, you can really see how much Ron looks like his dad, Rance Howard, now.
Ron's talking about F1 and Larry's talking about NASCAR...Ron gives him a look when Larry says "the endless left turn" and realizes Larry is loose in the marbles (NASCAR term).
My fave is the Pickle Story. LOL
I liked the episodes with the”fun girls”. When bRney is trying to hook up and getting Andy involved. Love those.
Mine too. That one and "Barney and the Choir"
Yes
Mr. MacBeevee and Opie the Birdman (winkin, blinkin and nod). My favorite episodes.
My favorite is “Horacio, the half a boy”
Opie's Three Wishes is a classic!
Ron Howard’s Dads honestly and morals is most likely why he’s the great man he is today
Hahaha....The look on Ron Howard’s face was classic when the conversation was about F1 and at the conclusion Larry King makes the comment about the “endless left turn”. Ron Howard the professional that he is, doesn’t say anything, but the WTH look on his face made me laugh.
My favorite Andy Griffith episodes are season two and three
I like that they, particularly Andy is always looking out for others' feelings.
Smoking was acceptable back then and so was spanking.
I have 2 faves, Man In A Hurry, for SO many reasons, but great episode (and Opie got to sleep on the ironing board between 2 chairs!!!). and the other is where Gomer sings Santa Lucia. Need kleenex for both.
Poor Horatio is my favorite.
Ron was so natural and unaffected as Opie: such a talented little guy was he: and look who he became!
Calling your son out in a pickup game that's on your son's birthday NOW that's tough love.
My favorite episode is anything with Barney and Otis together.
What we all want to know is who played Mr schwamp!
My favorite episode was when Opie accidentally killed a mama bird with his slingshot. This episode has always made me cry due to Ronnie Howard's great acting skills even as a young child. This was very a heartwarming episode
im in middle school and i find myself sitting down and watching it from season 1 to season 5 in one night
click 1:03 to skip long intro
Unless someone is into Formula One racing.
I just saw that episode Andy Griffith not that long ago. I watched with my parents all the time.
Yes, that was Mr. McBeevie. One of my favs. Opie and Andy brought tears to my my eyes with this episode.
RIP Larry
My favorite is the first episode
Who can ever forget kerosine cucumbers? Or Barney trying to teach Goober about how to date a woman by spying on Andy and Helen? “Pipe down this isn’t a ballpark!” LOL
Any episode with the Darlings
Opie.:-)Gotta love him.
The Best TV Show Ever, with all due respect to Seinfeld, I Love Lucy and The Office.
My mother and I watch Andy Griffith almost every night. She’s 85 and I’m 58. . . It’s ok. Go ahead and comment. I can take it.
I like all of them! with don knotts.
Where Barney tags the governors car and Otis spikes the Spring water
Larry shows that he knows absolutely nothing about Formula 1. Formula 1 doesn't go in circles and they aren't Indy cars.
Thank you, I noticed that as well. What a moron lol
+Logan Abner (Prancingmoose) What a maroon!!
He is talking about season 7 episode 4 "The Ball Game".
He's mountain-man friend. He's life-long friend that you can count on. He's our Opie.
