  • How do you become well known and in demand in your field? It starts by finding your niche. There's a reason that Specialist's are in so much higher demand than General Practitioner's in the medical field. When people have a specific problem that needs to be solved, they want to go to the best possible person to solve that problem. In this excerpt from one of his Adobe MAX 2022 talks, Chris talks about why niching is so important to keeping your career growing, and why fewer people doing the thing you excel at is your best option to create value.

      I’m a specialist that is also in my spare time building to be intermediate in many, there’s “t shaped marketer”, I’m … M shaped 😂
      It’s so much fun seeing the crossover and cross pollination of several, but primarily I’m a filmmaker, that loves telling emotional and inspiration stories so I can amplify the voices of those making positive change in the world.
      It’s just a bonus I’m a photographer, marketer, psychotherapist, vfx compositor, musician and illustrator.
      Up next is learning how to build offers, copywriting and helping creators scale. 🎉

    True, even when I played RPG games when I was young, specialising in one class makes me an effective player. The sideline is you'd need to have a team with you that can do well some things you're not good at. But as a business approach, if you're specialised, companies will find you to fix that specific problem they have issues with. But be smart and know your market well, so your niche won't suffocate you.

    I'm currently a seller of vintage collectables and I'm also a firm believer that niching down is the way to go, to an extent that I also do that for awhile in my business. I was wondering though, what are your thoughts on niching down to multiple niches? Like, for example doing Logo Design for Restaurants & Logo Design for Breweries, etc.? Also, what if you decide you want to expand your services and don't just do logo design and go broader and do Branding? Would this be benefitial or a hinderance, since you're going broader?

    My question is, doesn’t demand also scale down the more niche you go, hence why you have fewer competitors? Does the market premium adequately make up for that? How does that vary by industry or job types?

      Then you have to get long term clients and it's harder to prove your expertise in something you don't have much experience in. Niches are harder to get into, because they are niche, but rewards are great as well.

      I don't think that anti-niche time will ever come. It's great if you share things out of the niche from time to time, but you can only share in depth knowledge if you are niched down ^^

    Specializing in a specific discipline - okay. But a lot of people say it's also better to specialize on a specific industry and I would disagree in that. When you are specialized on a specific industry, you are competing against yourself in every single project. You will never make your customer to the best of their industry when you also care about their competition. it takes me 2 minutes with your customer to get your job ...

    • @jameslay6505
      @jameslay6505 Год назад +4

      I think I agree if I understand you. In other words, specialize in a specific problem rather than a specific industry? I guess as a customer, if there were a few solutions laid before me, would I choose the one that solves my problem? Or would I choose the one that is used by my competition? I'm not sure I know how people would act in that scenario.

    • @abaddierey

      Isn’t specializing in a specific industry, the same thing as finding a niche…………

    • @jameslay6505
      @jameslay6505 Год назад +1

      @@abaddierey Ill be honest and admit that I don't know, but my guess is that you can specialize in a problem that is not specific to an industry. So there's a niche of businesses who need to find drivers to perform regional deliveries, mostly on the weekends. The drivers are paid well because of the long hours and hard work (set up, break down), but do not require higher education. They are normally pretty unreliable unfortunately, which is the problem. This would be bounce house rentals and dump truck rentals and audio visual conference rentals and probably a lot more. Different industries, but they share the same specific logistical issues.

      Depends on how you communicate it. I’m sure I’ll win the client by saying: “My logo designs have helped bring businesses exactly such as yourself to increase sales by x and here’s how…”. Bring it as almost a formula/treatment which works every time, instead of speaking of competition. Besides, never presume what the competitors of the prospect are. Perhaps they don’t perceive them as such.

    I am wondering if niching is a good idea in very competitive spaces like Upwork's. With soo many different types of jobs available and soo much competition, it eventually boils down to a numbers game and how many proposals you can send out. Some clients don't even respond or hire anyone. As long as your work is of reasonable quality, it might be better to generalize in order to increase your proposal amount.

    • @ethanrogers9627
      @ethanrogers9627 Год назад +5

      Yeah, the answer is "Upwork sucks". If you're stuck with Upwork, you're stuck with generic work for generic audiences and low pay. Get out.

    • @shushu5474
      @shushu5474 Год назад

      @@ethanrogers9627 this is true. If you're stuck in Upwork, then you lack one fundamental life skill - networking. This is a skill that successful freelancers talk about. In fact, most successful freelancers I see rarely open their Upwork accounts anymore as they've already found their valuable clients outside the platform.
