    This is so unusual as a Lovecraft story. In most stories, we have one narrator and a few chatacters, none of whom take attention away from the events. They are like Ed MacMan who would introduce Johnny Carson on the Tonight Show and then fade into the background. In this story, we have a cast of diverse characters with distinctive personalities and some variance in their voices. The story is largely character-driven. It showcases H.P.'s ability to diversify and collaborate.

    Whenever I hear Rutland, I think of where my wife was living when I first met her. She lived on Library Avenue (in the part of town known as "the gut"). You would abide by two rules there. First rule: never lock your car at night. In the morning, people not following that rule would wake up to a smashed window and everything of value gone. You can probably figure out the second rule.

    Honestly, this story is unique for lovecraft, as it's more or less a happy ending. At least in the sense that everyone got what they deserved. (Spoilers ahead)
    Tom got buried alive for being an abusive asshole.
    Henry got buried alive for burying tom alive, as well as tampering with the laws of nature in ways he obviously shouldn't have.
    Sophie, who desperately wanted freedom, is now trapped in the house she hated, scared for her life as punishment for condemning the man who saved her from her abusive brother to a fate worse than death just because it was convenient. (Since she didn't love Henry and wanted to get rid of him)
    The whole town is cursed for being a bunch of indifferent assholes toward the whole situation.
    Only one I feel sorry for is poor Johnny 😥

    There are certain crypt-ic references to landmarks and colloquialisms native to my home state of Oklahoma. Stillwater, for example, is a small college town, where I actually pursued my studies in psychical medicine under Dr. Silence (okay, English lit). But Lovecraft seems to have a habit of collaborating with authors who showcase my state, in such stories as The Mound ( I have been to Binger many times) and The Curse of Yig ( The Insane Asylum in Guthrie is a deserted complex built by the Masons long ago, and a prime destination for college students who love to horrify themselves-and it was creepy I assure you). I do not know if this is an Oklahoma story, but the characters certainly sound like they hail from round about here.

    • @altasheridan7815
      @altasheridan7815 5 лет назад +2

      This Stillwater is northern Vermont. He always seemed to view Vermonters as New England's hillbillies. And as my mom;s family were rural Vermonters I can see his point a bit lol. It's beautiful country around the Stillwater State Park but very rugged and it was still fairly remote last time I was there circa 1970.My older relatives used to tell stories Lovecraft could have really run with. Our family (cousins a time or two removed) apparently had a cursed house in its past where all the men died horrible inexplicable deaths, allegedly stemming from the embittered invalid spinster daughter of the original builder whose malign spirit was active for well over 50 yrs until the place burned to the ground. VT is that kind of place
