I just bought a Merlin. I have no natural or learned music talent, skills or experience. Like none. I have found your tutorials exceptional and want to encourage you as they have been an encouragement for me to learn. Thanks.
Thanks for the encouragement. I'll be 48 years in the making and I'll let you know how it works out. I can whistle, lol, so maybe that will translate into having an ear for music. But again, good, detailed tutoring like what you are providing will go a long way to help people like me, so thank you.
Your videos are the best Merlin resource on the internet. In just a few days, I feel like my understanding of this instrument and ability to play it has skyrocketed! You are a natural music teacher. I have no questions when I come away from watching your videos. Thank you for sharing your gift. Seagull should be paying you for what you have done to promote this instrument.
You are a natural. Holy cow, I am so impressed!!!! Looks like the Merlin Seagull G. Now, I am thinking of buying one. Very inspiring. Subscribed and want to watch all your videos. Wonderful, just wonderful!
Brilliant, just brilliant. Happy New Year dude. The first video attempt was definately due to the "Bandana of Doom" (love the correct usage for a tie by the way). I laughed out loud when you started to sing "I don't know the words to this". More please!
Bought a used Merlin a few days ago and found your video which is GOLD! Thank you so much! I can now actually use it to play songs that are recognizable and that I like!
This is a big help thanks. Currently trying to figure out how/why you can use D A Bm G for C G Am F. Rewatching video and saw you talked about transposing. Great stuff. Thanks!!!
Transposing is AWESOME! It can change the key of the song to match your singing or other other instruments, or for myself, in the case of the ukulele and merlin, change the chords to make it easier to play. Chordie.com allows you to transpose with their tool so you can choose alternate keys easily! In the case of CGAmF, C and Am not easily played on Merlin. So moving everything up by one note fixes it, as C becomes D, Am becomes Bm, both easily played on Merlin. The other two notes are easily playable in either key. I hope that helps!
I started to make a dulcimer and need to finish it but recently one of the Merlins came up for sale locally and it sparked my interest in this instrument.. seems pretty versatile. So if you look up the circle of 5ths you'll see the keys you can play in and quickly work out a workable chord progression.
The technique you're referring to is ´´portamento´, it is pretty interesting you can look it up, even advanced guitar players think about that finger sliding for switching chords, not all the time but it is a nice tool for smooth transition.
Hey Ant! I've been watching your channels since like 2 years ago. Are you still in China? What are you up to these days?? Love the channel, keep it up :)
Mix the order some and you have 100's more. Using D G & A, 100's of folk, Blues, Country & Gospel songs. The 50's Progression would be D Bm G & A. Learn 1 more chord, Em and play D Bm Em A for more 50's songs. (And 60's! That Boy (Beatles), Oh Donna, and a ton more! Pretty cool!
Hi,I'm a little confused as those chords aren't like I've seen on Merlin chord charts. Can you enlighten me? I'm brand new and just getting used to it.
Sigh… Sadly here they are SUPER expensive from local online sellers. Last one I found was almost $1000 Canadian! I have resigned myself to waiting till my next trip back to Canada to pick one up. If you find a local deal, please do let me know, as I am now merlinless…
Am I wrong in suggesting to tune it down a whole step? At least more songs are written in key of c and don’t need to transpose ( a valuable skill non the less)
Thread resurrection... With the short scale length, it'll be particularly sensitive to the change in string tension. Heavier strings may support the dropped tuning with appropriate tension for playability and sound, but it may be hard to find appropriate heavier gauge strings for such a niche instrument.
First time I see one of your videos. I liked you not like a typical 2020 morons who are youtubers simply because they can record videos with their smartphone. Cheers!

It fun to play a limited instrument and see what you can squeeze out of it.
Agreed! I sincerely wish I still had my merlin. I am going to do my best to pick one up again next year when I am back in Canada.
Brilliant......love it

Oy fricken Vey! you legend! 👐
Ooh I love the sound of the Merlin: I'm currently in Shanghai do you know where I might purchase one?
Sigh… Sadly here they are SUPER expensive from local online sellers. Last one I found was almost $1000 Canadian! I have resigned myself to waiting till my next trip back to Canada to pick one up. If you find a local deal, please do let me know, as I am now merlinless…
This is great, thank you. Did you have a list of songs that use these chords?
+sirant perfect, thanks again
@@sirant how do you transpose to the key of D tho?
@@Anjohl He literally explains how at 3:06.
you just move all the chords up 2 semi-tones or half-steps. like a C goes 2 half steps up to D, like C goes up two C# D@@Anjohl
What is your tuning? DAD?
Yep!
Am I wrong in suggesting to tune it down a whole step? At least more songs are written in key of c and don’t need to transpose ( a valuable skill non the less)

Is this the G Merlin?

How you play chord C?
Huakalongo youd have to mod your merlin and add a fret between thr firdt and second frets on your middle string.
