Great to see the mad dog coils review and you making some QSOs from a park. I think parks are my favourite type of radio activity at the moment. Great to see the 7300 got an outing as well.
We were building these back in the 70,s. Two inch PVC. Then used a number 10 wire cut the length of a quarter wave at 80 meters. Marked the wire for each band on a quarter wave 6 meters thru 80 meters. wrapped it around the PVC and added a ground for the counterpoise . Then plug in the coax from the transceiver. Tap the coil for the band you want and transmit. So simple. Oh ya forgot the 102 inch whip. Or whatever length you want. Use small stainless screws for each band into the wire on the coil. Most of the time I didn't need a tuner. Back then that would have been a manual tuner.Actually since it is a coil you really dont need a tuner. So I would make a Shunt coil 1 inch wide wounds. Add that to the coax center lead and to ground. Done, no need for a tuner. The 2 inch PVC helps to give some bandwidth. Used these coils for my long wire for 80 and 160 to add length and bandwidth . I would say now days would be build for $80 ish bucks depending on how much of this stuff you already have. We are hams and we build neat stuff.
I built mine with a PVC pipe with a 3 inch diameter foam pool noodle slid over it and bare wire wrapped around it, with an old bamboo fishing pole to support about a 10 foot long vertical wire with a couple inch disk of PCB material on top as a tophat. At the coil base I used a jumper with an alligator clip on top and just moved it up and down for the lowest noise in the center of each band, then marked those spots. I don't recall how many bands it covers, (haven't used it since before COVID,) but it was very easy to hop around on the bands just by moving the alligator clip up and down on each band while listening for receiver noise. I didn't even need to check the SWR if I listened carefully for the noise level. I made the whole thing from junk in the shed, so it cost nothing and it all folds up and is held together by 2 Velcro straps, and weighs next to nothing at all. I was shocked at how much people were paying for those Wolf River coils. They cost more than I paid for an HF rig! We're hams. We can build an antenna in an afternoon for free. And I bet my coil has lower dielectric loss than a Wolf RIver coil, because the pool noodle is practically all air.

I bought an 80M metric version after watching your video, Hayden. I'm hoping it will finally allow me to operate HF from our boat on the Gippsland Lakes - its not a yacht, so doesnt have a mast available. After it arrived, I recalled that I have a few old whips in the shed that might also be usable with the coil, although they have imperial threads. However, the thought of having to also buy the imperial threaded version of the coil didn't appeal to my Scottish genetic base. I did get the 3/8 24 NF coupler nut though and discovered that the 3/8" threaded hole in it was very close to the diameter hole required for a 10mm tap. A few minutes careful work with such a tap transformed half the depth of thread in the coupler nut to 10mmx 1.5mm. A relatively easy mod that now allows me to use imperial threaded whips with my 80M coil. Bill VK7MX

No guesswork tuning if you use a steel rule to measure from the top winding down to the slider and record the settings for each band. Quick and simple.
I have thought about getting an amateur radio license. I have always enjoyed the radio hobby as a listener. I have done lots of radio related service and repair. But, I have never transmitted, save into a dummy load. But alas, the entry level license offers very little HF privileges. It does not even offer all of 10 meters. Of course all analogue modes are allowed from 28.3 to 28.5 Mhz. But, it would be extremely unlikely to get a response on 28.455 Mhz if I sent out a CQ on FM. It is not illegal. But it is just not conventional and would likely anger some operators. There are unlimited privileges from 6 meters to infinity. But HF is where my interests happen to be. Thus, I just remain an unlicensed hobbyist, preparing, building, reprogramming, modifying, and installing, radio equipment and peripherals.
Just saw your video on mad dog coil just wondering on the tripod would like a adjustable tripod but am wondering what type do i need to look for do have a Camera tripod but obviously has different top has a camera slide in base to it and does not seem to have a screw in section small enough to screw something like this into do i look for a speaker tripod or something else?

No it will have limited effect on detuning. If you switch back to 80m, you still have the same inductance (windings) to the end of the coil to antenna connected
I can see the point of this for 80m but for 40m a 10m squid pole and wire with the same counterpoise is less compromised more efficient?? …. Though perhaps marginally more difficult to set up (unless it is very windy)? Great to see an Aussie in the antenna space though… I’m sure it will go MAD and sell by the truck load for hams in a hurry as the tuning is quick and doesn’t involve capacitors so it can take more watts up the spout!!! If you use the telescopic whip on the 80m and 40m coil you can tune 20metres I have built one using Marty’s video. By thanking the collar to the top of the coil and shortening the telescopic whip you can tune 10 metres. However if using the military style sectional whip I haven’t been able to tune 10 metres.

Loading coils for verticals have been around for many decades, nothing new here. Your problem is laying out ground radials and he hazard of someone tripping on that wire. This could have disastrous results for POTA. Use your vehicle as a quasi counterpoise or a single wire you can monitor. Or better yet, get something safely in the air above other users of the park.
Interesting except for using a BNC to attach coax. I would prefer an S0-239 to fix a PL-259 Coax. No one in the United States is going to want to use a VHF BNC.

No I don't earth or ground the IC-7300. I just run the counterpoise out on top of the ground

BNC is great. Quick disconnect perfect for portable. My Buddipole uses a BNC too and it was Made in USA 🤔
