- FRANZ JOSEPH TEMPORARY EXHIBITION (www.franzjoseph2016.at/)
To mark the centenary of the death of Emperor Franz Joseph, an extensive and multi-faceted exhibition exploring the life and work of this legendary monarch will be held at Schönbrunn and the Imperial Furniture Collection in Vienna, Schloss Niederweiden in the Marchfeld region of Lower Austria and the Imperial Carriage Collection in Vienna.
He is just a legend...
Thank you!
@@kaiserfranzjosephi1933 May you rest in peace.
This man was a tragic figure, despite his privileged life and upbringing...In his duty bound life time he saw his own brother executed in Mexico, his only son and heir die 'mysteriously' in the Mayerling incident, his beloved wife Elisabeth (Sisi) assassinated by an anarchist in Lake Geneva, and his nephew killed on a visit to Sarajevo, setting off a chain reaction that led to World War.What a life!...Even for an Emperor!..
Alexander Karayannis There was nothing mysterious about Mayerling. Just a love struck Crown Prince trapped in an unhappy marriage. Even by modern standards it was a great personal tragedy and scandal. No wonder, he was anxious to cover it all up as a “shooting accident”.
@@ferencrupeck845 Thank you for your reply Ferenc... You are right of course, nothing too... mysterious or inexplicable about the whole affair, but, with no other witnesses around, this 'mystery' of what happened at that Mayerling hunting lodge continues to fascinate to this day!...
He also saw his father mother and his second brother die during his reign
@@halo8119 This is all true, but he also lost his first born baby Sophie in infancy, and in truth he wasn't exactly devastated with Franz Ferdinand's demise either, in fact, he was rather relieved as he admitted later...My point is, his life was long, full, and eventful despite his noble birth, and the daily rituals of running an empire that disintegrated just a few years after his own death...He had his fair share of triumph and tragedy as any mortal does, but, what an incredible life journey it was!...
@@alexanderkarayannis6425 I respect and admire Franz Josef but he really should have stepped down and allow his nephew; Franz Ferdinand rule.
Austria has never produced a man as great since
Unlike hitler this man was no monster
God Save The Emperor!
Restoration now!
I have never read or heard what the people he ruled over had to say about him. Was he a beloved ruler in parts of his empire, and hated in other parts? I know Serbia had no use for him, but as this documentary shows, he was obviously revered by many.
The Serbs hate everybody around them
I tend to agree with you. Snippets like this one always seem to place royalty on a pedestal. Once they lose their crowns and empires, it is always someone else's fault as they were ordained by God for their roles. They know that they have human subjects because their subjects pays the taxes that allow them to l live a life grandeur.
Dave Hoskins He had the common touch and even ordinary people could request a private audience with him if they had a particular issue or problem that was difficult to resolve. How many modern day monarchs do you know that are that accessible?
@@annkey4091 Actually he was largely credited with uniting the tinderbox of varying ethnicities in his Empire. As Monarch he saw it as his role to be a symbol of unity as well as to keep the Politicians at Bay. In general he was loved especially in the last 30-40 years of his life/reign. There he excelled. This is agreed especially as he was a bit despised earlier with his Military occupation of Hungary and Neo-Absolutism. He helped usher in Universal Male Suffrage (which came into fruition in 1907) and the Welfare State (not unlike Otto Von Bismarck who did it to keep the Socialists at Bay).
Very interesting. Thank you for sharing.
What a guy I must say.

This man was in a position to raise Austrian empire to a first rate great power,But ending up making her the least of the great power. If only his upbringing taught him the importance of new technology and if he wasn't so prone to nepotism in the early years of his reign.
Poor Franz Josef couldn't adjust to the changing of the world around him.
Due to this Old Gentleman WW1 started😢.
Someone skipped history class
It was not really him, it was the Austrian politicans but more the Russian government.

He was a "tragic figure" only because he was unable to see that the whole administration of his Empire was a complete failure. He had no idea of politics let alone of running the Austro-Hungarian Empire that this sad tin-soldier-loving idiot (?) had inherited. Unlike the British Empire the Austro-Hungarian 'subjects' were ruled by Austrian administrators who lacked any kind of empathy for the people they just 'administrated': e.g. there were no colonial settlers in the colonies of this sad Empire.
MOST IMPORTANT OF ALL, Franz-Joseph was unable to realize that he and his Empire had long ago been nothing but a burden to the German Reich. If the Germans, years befor 1914, had dropped that doubtful confederation with Austria-Hungary, there would most likely never have been such a catastrophe as the Great War (World War I) !!
