    Hi Ashlee, I'm so grateful for your videos. Can you discuss why this method would be preferred over "Copy Course"?

    • @VirtualTeachingPro
      @VirtualTeachingPro  3 года назад

      Hi there! I think it's more of a preferred personal preference and what you need that works best for you. This video is about a year old right now so there are many options available on Canvas now in 2021 that weren't available when I recorded this tutorial. If you use copy course steps then it needs to be in the same institution but if you want to copy that course into another class in a different college/school/etc you will want to export it. Hope that helps a little!

    • @VirtualTeachingPro
      @VirtualTeachingPro  3 года назад

      Hi there. Good question. This is example I used in the video was an older class where I was testing out the idea of links in the homepage bc Canvas was new to that college. I put links on the homepage as an experiment to see if it helped them navigate the content a little easier for an online asynchronous course. It was helpful to some but now that Canvas is used more and students are familiar with the platform I no longer include the buttons or links on the homepage unless it’s a school where the students are new to online classes or Canvas. Already trying née things to see what works!

    Hi there! I'm very new to Canvas, and I have created a Sandbox course to play around in so I don't mess any of my real courses up. I have a homepage and a few modules created in my Sandbox course. When I import from my modules and pages in Sandbox, will all of the links stay the same in the modules and on my homepage? I'm a little apprehensive to even attempt this because I'm so afraid I'll lose everything I've spent so much time on.
    Your videos have been a lifesaver so far! I truly enjoy watching and learning from you!

    • @VirtualTeachingPro
      @VirtualTeachingPro  4 года назад

      it should not change anything once you import it or copy content into your new courses. I say should because I feel like Canvas is changing constantly and every school district has been setting up different functions/elements/restrictions for their needs. It's kind of like the wild west of online teaching right now! You shouldn't loose any work. If it helps, export your course you've created in sandbox and save that file as a back. I did a video on how to do this. Hope this helps a little.

    I absolutely love your videos and rely on them to build courses for next year. How do you make a template Page and keep reusing it and relabeling it? I thought I had a template but realized that everytime I renamed it it changed the content and I had to make the Pages from scratch each time. I apologize for my lame question.

    • @VirtualTeachingPro
      @VirtualTeachingPro  4 года назад

      Click on your pages tab on the left side bar. Go to the top and click on the red button view all pages.Go to the far right side of the page you want to reuse and click on the three dots. click duplicate page. now you have a copy of that page and can rename and re use and build off of that as a template. Hope this helps! Just remember to duplicate items in canvas to create a copy of it then you can rename and reuse it. No question is ever lame :) Just like we tell our students...all questions are just as important.

    Thanks so much for the awesome videos Ashlee! One question we had is about images on a page. If you import a page or module like you showed, the images will import to the new class automatically, correct? (You don't have to also pick them from the "files" section when you do the import?) I had some issues with kids not being able to see images on a page even though I could see them but I think it was because I was copy/pasting and not doing the actual "import".

    • @VirtualTeachingPro
      @VirtualTeachingPro  4 года назад

      You should be able to see everything including images and videos but I always suggest going back in and double checking everything. If you make sure you always import files and images then they should ideally be logged into your cloud so when you copy course content to other classes the files attached will go with them. I do sugggest importing everything so it's in the system rather than dropping or copy paste into pages. Also, when you import images make sure they are accessible filling in the alt text on the right.

    To be fair, if I sound less than nice or bitter it is because our school district started using(forced us) using Canvas last year, A WEEK before school started! ANYWAY, in the video at 10:34, she discusses changing the date which is helpful BUT on that page, there is a beginning or ending date during the import process. BUT the class dates are not important and she doesn't bother. HOWEVER, the due dates of imported assignments are REALLY important, and changing them for each assignment is VERY TIME-CONSUMING. Also, she lists 3 things, attachments, files, links, that might not work and she says that is not important. SO, add up this 13-minute video and all the other little things she mentioned that will take 3-4 minutes and THAT ADDS UP! I appreciate her help but the elephant in the room is that LMS is the biggest time-waster than anything I have seen in education for the past 25 years. I admit there is so much I don't know about this LMS but to me, it seems like itunes for schools. A place where all the education apps and be sold but we only are buying them because people in district offices around the country, who have not taught is YEARS, thought it would be a good idea. BECAUSE there is NO WAY anyone who has been in a classroom for 30 years would have EVER DESIGNED a grade book like Canvass's ( yes, I added the extras). Could they not figure out how to erase or reset the due dates when they added the option of changing the dates of the cousre when importing am assignment? AND why don't they have an "assigned day" option when editing, or is "available date "supposed to be used? SORRY I know i must sound like the guy from "Network" but I am mad as He** but I have no choice but to take until another new shiny toy is dangled in front of our districts TOSAs ugh

      Hi there Josh. First, I'd like say that I am very sorry for your frustrations with Canvas and the quick move to online teaching. It's been a challenge for educators all over the world to make that jump without much help or prior warning.
      Just a tip: when you import a course you will always need to go through and update each due date on the assignments even if you put in the dates. It will unfortunately never work out perfectly as each calendar year always shifts.
      Canvas is always updating and even though it is not perfect it has become the most widely used LMS across the world. The advantage is that when students transtion from K-12 into college they will more than likely be familiar with the platform.
      There are many components and working pieces in Canvas and does take time to learn what works best for you and how you teach your classes. I do think Canvas will be the main LMS for the future so at least (we hope) we will all get to stick with one system and support each other in this new online form of education which is exactly why I created my channel as a FREE resources for educators.

    Ashlee, I teach elementary self-contained which means I teach each subject every day. However, as a 3rd grade team, we each plan for a different subject. Is there a way for me to upload all my assignments each week for the subject I plan for, and send that to my team to save us some time. That way I don't have to upload each assignment/quiz/discussion each day for each subject. Does that make sense??? So can we copy modules and everything in it and send it to our entire team for them to upload or is the canvas copy/import function only for courses we teach individually?

    I went to assignments and pressed delete syllabus and I couldn't see the material that I just copied in my new class, When I go to settings it shows the information of the new class only. In the section Import content says:
    " No jobs have been queued
    Content import files cannot be downloaded after 500 days."

      You can edit the syllabus once you upload it into the course you are copying it into. Copy the content you want into the new course then go into the syllabus and edit it in that new course. hope this helps a little. It's hard to understand exactly what I can say that helps in this situation via text without seeing your screen.
