This is my previously unreleased footage from the notorious Formula 1 San Marino Grand Prix in Imola, 1 May 1994, as seen and filmed as a spectator to the event.
Formula One World Champion Ayrton Senna died on 1 May 1994, as a result of his car crashing into a concrete barrier while he was leading the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix at the Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari in Italy. The previous day, Roland Ratzenberger died when his car crashed during qualification for the race. His and Senna's accidents were the worst of several accidents that took place that weekend and were the first fatal accidents to occur during a Formula One race in twelve years.
The 1994 San Marino Grand Prix was a Formula One motor race held on 1 May 1994 at the Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari, located in Imola, Italy. It was the third race of the 1994 Formula One season.
Roland Ratzenberger died during qualifying for the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix.

Amateur footage of the weekend Imola 1994 are very rare on RUclips. In those years there were no phones and very few people carrying camcorders to film. Is always interest on my part appreciate the work done by these people and reporting to the present day precious movies for us fans of that era. I want to say THANK YOU Thomas for this. Cheers from Italy. Marco.
Grazie!

15:50 Rest in peace, Roland!
the moment he did not go straight into the pits, his life was already lost. If only he took the pits entrance before the last chicane..
It’s a weird feeling seeing footage of someone who’s got about 30 seconds to live
It's amazing how much speed is lost through the television cameras. It isn't until you see footage shot from people attending the races, that you see the true speed of these cars. And seeing that makes you realize why it's such a dangerous sport. On a lighter note, that screaming Ferrari V12 sounds amazing
Except that the only difference, we were more aware of the situation of Roland Ratzenberger and that of Ayrton Senna as a television viewer while the spectators who attended the race did not necessarily see the seriousness of the situation in any case the things for sure it was the darkest grand prix i have known and i have more to trace with excerpts that i was able to extract from a dvd that i bought on the 1994 season and it is how I was able to retrace the events and that I also shared on RUclips with better quality videos.
What you have here is something never to get rid of. You must pass this on to generations to generations, that's the magnitude of this footage.
The little touches like the build up to a session and after are just spot on. Very rare to find footage like this and you should be credited 👏👏
Thank you!
I agree. This footage is very rare and valuable, as a piece of sports and social history.
@did you go to a lot of F1 races back then??
Amazing unseen footage , sad seeing Roland flying past pits on his final ever flying lap
Very sad.
I was 16 at the time, it was rare to own a camcorder at that time, thank you for sharing the video plus it was a terrible weekend we saw the images live or heard on the radio or on the 8 p.m. set. news it was really horrible this weekend in any case a big thank you for doing this upload so by playing Assetto Corsa it allows you to pretend like you were there
and I prefer this era to 2023, bravo to you Thomas for having produced these amateur images, from France.
Very interesting to see and hear this grand prix from spectator's perspective!
RIP Roland 28 years to the day 🙏🏻
Auf wiedersehen mein freund
A day after this everything got different,,, although I did not even came close to knowing him, Senna was a real idol,,, funny I was thinking of him today while attending the mass at church in Duomo, Milan.
*I think* you can actually see the moment there with Roland where he clips the front wing on the entrance to the Bassa. The car jumps in the air and the wing mounts loosen. A few corners later the wing went underneath the car and caused the crash. You just want to scream 'pit!' at him. What an awful weekend.
Paul Martin it was scarier than that. The front wing failed and at least partially, if not fully, sheared off coming out of Tamburello on the run into Villeneuve. It wasn’t a case of the car tobogganing on the wing, but rather with no front wing to speak of, the car lacked so much downforce the front end couldn’t grip the track, meaning turning and braking were practically useless.
Sorry...where he clips the wing?
I don't think you can see on this video.
I.think he crash the front wing in the lap before
It was the same lap your talking about but earlier in the lap at the acqua minerali chicane. Then the lap he started when he crossed the line towards the end of this vid was the lap he crashed
Thank you very much for sharing with us.
Great footage!this video transforms you really at that bad weekend . rip Ayrton and Ratzie
Blackest weekend in F1 ever.
2 deaths and 3 accidents
I love this video and I watch it every week😍😔🙏🏻

Well this is just something...wow...
Fantastic uploads. Thank you!
Than you for appreciating the videos.
This was a disastrous weekend for F1. Tragically two drivers lost thier lives, the world lost one of the greatest drivers and human beings that ever lived. With the benefit of hindsight after the death of Ratzenberger during Saturday qualifying the remainder of the event should have been cancelled in respect his death. This ultimately would have saved Senna's life but sadly it was not to be. RIP legend...
Ayrton Senna was not one of the Greatest, the Greatest ever!!!!!
I think if it happened today they would not race the race would have been canceled
@@audreyperrin320I totally agree with you. If Roland had been declared deceased at the track, which he was, the race would have been cancelled under Italian law. Unfortunately money took precedence over safety and people's lives, yet again.
A special piece of history thank you 🙏🏻
Did you guys know at the time Roland and Ayrton died on track? This is some amazing footage, thanks for sharing.
Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaas
thank you
Mind Senna and Roland lives today ?
My dudes; this race was cursed af.
Critical injuries on Barrichello
Death of Roland
Injuries at race start including fans in the grandstand
Death of Senna
Two mechanics seriously injured.
The universe was pissed off this race continued.
This is the sound of F1, wonderful, the sound of ferrari is sensational.
Even though that weekend was marred by tragedy sometimes I find myself coming here just to here those engines screaming past the cameraman
Tack!
I have a slide 35mm of Ayrton Senna around Tosa and based on the marks on the track it must have been from Ratzenberger's car the previous day, thus it has been taken on Sunday 1 May 1994! That is why I'm asking you if he was participating on April 30?
please can u sharing playlist....nice music ;)
16:01is this austlian ratzenberger?
that ferrari noise!
All cars noise Mercedes , Ford , belissimos sounds
Since that Sunday afternoon I'm wondering about several unanswered doubts....
Just saying....how is it there were no amateur film makers in the Tamburello area ?
Let apart professional film makers,a crowd of enthusiasts was on the stands and not even a single video, not even one out of hundreds of bystanders ??!!
Wasn't there one single fan using his smartphone in video mode ?
Smartphone in 1994?
@@ricardagottschalk9089
You're 110 % right :-) ....albeit the essence of my
comment is still there.
Since that Sunday it seems unlikely to me that no recordings or witnessings were available following the accident, could it be a picture by Reflex camera or a Super 8 video or whatever...
Possibly on one day,who can say....
there is a recording by stefano maffei on that corner, very interesting watch
@@Nickeloss Thanks for the info.
There's also a video from the stand in front of Tamburello. That shows the crash and the doctors working on Senna, then the helicopter taking him away. The fans mood changes from happiness to solemn in
Qual minuto ocorre a batida?
Have you other footage from those days? ;( Thanks Thomas
Yes this "F1 Imola San Marino 1994" is on my page, and a longer video of Sunday comes soon.
Yes. Watched the first video some days ago, i will wait the third one. Ciao grazie
and you have more from other years ? or other gps where senna was in
Do you allow me to take a few short sequences from your Video? so that I can complete the edit that I have already optimized in 4K in addition to the videos that I have captured from the DVDs that I own
Hi, that’s a no, sorry. I usually Get a more formell request, and a contract.
Practice:Ratzenberger
Qualifying:Barrichello (nearly)
Race:Senna
Conclusion:What a great fucking weekend
You forgot the Crash at the Racestart.
Is that clip of Roland one of the last ever recorded?
Hi! Yes, unfortunately it is.
Purely out of interest, how come after all these years you are posting up the footage?
Thanks very much too, by the way!
The reason is simple, I just recently started using RUclips to upload material. And I was tidying up in som closets at home and came across some old video recordings that had just been laying there for a long time. I started the process of transferring them to my Mac and then I got to look at the footage again, som forgotten and some I knew I had.
The first of that old footage I uploaded in case some people might be interested, was this video from Imola in 1994. The whole thing is a video starting at home in Norway, seeing the race and going back again with my father.
Thank you SO MUCH for uploading this!
Thanks Thomas, weird to go back to that day 23 years later, I was watching this live at home as an 11 year old.
Hi, I have answered that in the two other videos, but I can post my answer here too. The reason is simple, I just recently started using RUclips to upload material. And I was tidying up in som closets at home and came across some old video recordings that had just been laying there for a long time. @ Thank you Thomas!
アイルトン 君がいなくて寂しいよ
Was Ayrton driving on 30 April 1994? or he Qualified in Pole Position the day before on Friday 29 April ??
George Voudouris on Friday it was training, and qualifying was on Saturday.
@ I know but there is no specific information in the Internet of the Sessions that took place both on Friday 29th and 30th or a full video here in RUclips (besides amateur material as in your case) which proves or disproves the fact that Ayrton Senna participated in one or both these days. Thus, I am wondering whether Ayrton Senna participated o Saturday 30 April 1994 the day Roland Ratzenberger died, because I've read that on Friday had achieved his Pole Position. So since you witnessed the event can you confirm that he run on Saturday?
Practise 2 Saturday morning #1 Ayrton Senna 1:22.083
It was both Friday & Saturday each mornings Practice, afternoons Qualifying. Pole was in Friday Qualifying.
@ Das stimmt so nicht.
Am Freitag war das erste Qualifiing und Samstag das Zweite.
Das wurde erst später geändert.
Have you videos from other races to?
Yes! I have from a couple of other races.
And I will publish more footage from the Raceday at Imola that Sunday shortly.
Thomas Grønvold will you post also the other races? This videos are history and i'd love to whatch other :)
Yes I will do that.Thank you for your interest.
Thomas Grønvold No man, thank you for sharing this videos
