In the mid 70's I drove ON every accessible Texas beach from the Boliver Peninsula to the Rio Grande. Some of those beaches, Sargent comes to mind, are just covered with timber, logs, stumps, etc. I learned that most of the wood found on Texas beaches comes from the rivers, and is especially thick after high water in those rivers, The debris flows down river, into the gulf, and the prevailing Southerly currents catch it and take it South, depositing it all along the beaches. Of course other trash does come from ships and rigs in the Gulf. Love your videos, both for the flying and the locations you pick.
first time I watch your video , very professional very informative it promotes flying as a great hobby/sport or just plain fun. I love the 172 just the right size. Many thanks great job
dude I love these videos. keep doing a good job. your constant proficiency of verbally saying and doing checklist items and good decision making process helps me to also refine my flying. thank you. I fly in North Georgia, out of KCNI, if your ever in the area. lol. thanks again man
I grew up on that beach in the 60's and it always amazed us what would wash up on the beach. The word was ships and off shore rigs would dump trash. UGH. Enjoyed the view from above
They’re all legal until something happens. Just remember the catch all... “reckless and negligent operation of an aircraft” they will throw at you if you crash.
Landed several times on that abandoned AAF field on Matagorda. Easy hike over the dunes to your private beach. It's long walk home if you botch the hot start.
I loved going down to Port A ever since I was younger, and taking a plane down there is a dream of mine that hopefully ill be able to fulfill once I get my license.
Love your video's, at 62 years old I'm still afraid to fly. My last flight was July 1975 on TWA airlines, but somehow I feel if you were flying I would be much more comfortable. Thanks Brandon for sharing these video's maybe one day to could take me for a small flight.
I took my family to Mustang Island this summer in my little Piper Cherokee. There is a hotel called Amelia's Landing which is owned by a pilot, and all the rooms are aviation themed. He also has a courtesy car available to pilots at the airport. Just FYI for the other pilots checking out this video
I did the same flight years ago in the opposite direction only I got down to 50'. I'd already run the landing checklist just in case. We were flying at 70kts with half flaps so I was ready to land at any time. As we got down to Port A we climbed and circled the bay before having a near mid air with an MD80 while landing at KCRP. Seeing cows in the surf was cool. I have video of the flight somewhere.
1:06 You commented "Let it accelerate, don't wanna start climbing and have a gust take away my speed." Seriously folks, words to live (literally) by. My dad died doing exactly that.
+MrAviation101 According to the FAA, it was not due to a mechanical failure of any kind, and a witness said he rotated, and almost immediately began a left banking climb. Then what seemed to be a random gust hit him from behind and above, (because of the left banking turn) and he stalled his left wing and nosedived.
Yeah, he said "I don't wanna start climbing too slow..." Strange. I wouldn't wanna climb too fast and have a gust "take that wind". The closer you are to the runway on a take off during a wind shear or engine failure the better.
New subscriber. Your videos are very inspiring. I am 15 years old hopefully, I'll get my Glider Pilot License and PPL in the next few years, and do what you're doing. The prom vid that you made, also motivates me, lol. - Proud member of Royal Canadian Air Cadets
I lived in Port A for a while. there's a unmaintained beach south of there that you can drive on called big shell and little shell and my friend found like 200ft of rope that was like 4 inches thick that washed up from a ship.
Hi, I don't know much about aviation and I came across your channel quite by chance, but I'm finding it very absorbing. Could you tell me what the coloured square display is just right of centre on your dashboard and what it does please?
Love the videos man! BEST way for me to be as close as possible to flying until flight school, (love the various amounts of camera and positions). Love from CLT! lemmie know if you ever fly out to KJQF...... happy and safe flying.....
When was this flight recorded? I've been thinking about planning a trip down there to Kite but i want the wind to be solid if i'm coming from California. Was the airport of departure KRAS?
Enjoyed the video. One question I had though is since it appears that the airplane was operated beyond gliding distance from land were IFD's carried on board?
Hmmm... I'm wonderin' if there may have been a touch-n-go on that deserted stretch of beach that got edited out of the video??? :-D Seriously, always enjoy your videos Josh!
I never did a T&G, though I was very tempted. San Jose Island has a good bit of obstacles in the way on the beaches, but go two Islands to the north, and the beaches are wide open. Next time!
MrAviation101 I read up on some stories of guys landing on the highways north of there near victoria I believe. Also apparently some investors from dallas once tried to start a suborbital company on one of the old NAS's up north of Mustang Island. Cool area.
I've flown along the beach before (long time ago) and it is tempting to drop down low but like you said that doesn't give you much time for emergencies.
Interesting video ! I've watched a lot of American and Canadian aviation videos and I've always wondered about the flight rules and law over there because I've seen a lot of people flying really low, some people even getting taught by their instructor about how to land on roads ! ^^ I fly in France so under the European aviation law and I find it interesting comparing them all. :) In France, we aren't even allowed to fly under 500ft unless there is an emergency or when taking off or landing of course. If I were to fly over the coast like you did I'd have to be at 1000ft if I was in the 600m radius of the people on the beach ^^ Great video anyway !
It's 500 ft above the surface. In fact, subject to interpretation, it could be down to the surface so long as 500 ft distance is maintained from the beachgoers.
Being that the beach is maybe 100 yards wide, there's no need to fly over the ocean. An engine failure over the sand would not have prevented a water landing; even with a crazy onshore wind. Not to mention, setting down on land is probably a better idea than ditching.
Hi Josh. Have you ever thought about installing auto pilot. I'm asking because I was lucky enough to fly with a friend yesterday who has it in his 172, and to feel the plane change course all by itself is an amazing feeling. I know it would be expensive , but with all the flying you do, it could be worth it. The glass display was also pretty awesome.
joe leeman either ditch in the water or head for the grassy dunes. Either way the airplane would be toast, but we'd most likely walk/swim away with minimal injuries. The worst thing we could do is try and put it on the beach. We'd kill several people at least.
I'm sorry this is unrelated to flying. But the thing you said about the empty land. they always say the world is overpopulated, but when you're flying there are always huge pieces of land just empty. And I just always wonder why they don't build there.. or grow food or whatever.
The idea of the world being overpopulated has more to do with logistics than physical space. A certain amount of land (how much depends on farming technology) is required to produce enough food for each person, for example. The world could be said to be overpopulated if any requirement is exceeded. For example, if the environment can't absorb the carbon output of an average person, it could be said to be overpopulated because the carbon build-up would be causing a problem. Another way of looking at it though is that technology and/or policies should be improved to solve those logistical problems. Then the world is no longer "overpopulated" even without reducing the population.
Come up and fly over Lake Texoma on a Summer weekend afternoon. You may see some idiot actually skiing his tires on the water. Cubs, Taylorcraft and other taildraggers doing it around the Oklahoma side of the islands out of Highport Marina.
I'd be terrified to fly below 500 feet considering you are nearing RC aircraft altitude. Many people fly their quadcopters off of the beach. I'd like to think that most of them would be smart and descend when they see an airplane coming, but you never know.
Here’s a fun fact about the shipping channel... every once in a while, they do have to dredge. But, not for what you think. With how much the ships draft and how much water the props move, those ships naturally dredge the shipping channel each time they go through. The prop and draft literally sucks up the muck on the bottom and throws it on either side. They mostly have to dredge the sand bars these ships create from the spinning up of all the sand/muck.
"Do you make youtube videos?"
"Affirmative. Watch out for this one."
Best part. You are a celebrity now!
What can I say, curiosity got the best of me. I had to ask!
+Austin Wise LOL
+Austin Wise It's seriously cool that the ATC controller in the video is commenting haha! You have cool videos on your page as well.
That wasn't the controller, it's an uncontrolled airport, so it was just someone listening in on the radio :)
Huggin' beach below "fife-hunnit". We do this a lot south of JFK and the Long Island coastline. Good flyin', Josh.

I like watching your videos. I'm an aspiring Pilot myself and I always learn something from your videos. Thank you
nice video as usual Josh. Adding the thought, training involved is an awesome service. thanks for the ride
Great video. I have grown up around aviation and thrush aircraft. Good to see younger people in flying. Keep Flying!
first time I watch your video , very professional very informative it promotes flying as a great hobby/sport or just plain fun.

That was a quick trip to Oshkosh
lmao
My thoughts exactly.
lol
Lol
B Gosh!
Always enjoy the ride. Thanks
I grew up on that beach in the 60's and it always amazed us what would wash up on the beach. The word was ships and off shore rigs would dump trash. UGH. Enjoyed the view from above
Its amazing realizing the thrilling things you can do in an aircraft that are completely legal
Aviation is freedom!
Excellent video Josh, you are doing so well. Nice disclaimer and reg update as well
I loved going down to Port A ever since I was younger, and taking a plane down there is a dream of mine that hopefully ill be able to fulfill once I get my license.
I gotta get back in the air! I miss flying. Have to review all my ground school stuff, and start flying again.
Love your video's, at 62 years old I'm still afraid to fly. My last flight was July 1975 on TWA airlines, but somehow I feel if you were flying I would be much more comfortable. Thanks Brandon for sharing these video's maybe one day to could take me for a small flight.

Nice! We go down to Corpus Christi to harvest cotton every year, looks like fun flying

I'm sorry to hear that! He died because a gust lowered his airspeed and it stalled?
+MrAviation101 According to the FAA, it was not due to a mechanical failure of any kind, and a witness said he rotated, and almost immediately began a left banking climb. Then what seemed to be a random gust hit him from behind and above, (because of the left banking turn) and he stalled his left wing and nosedived.
Fantastic video by the way.
Never take anything for granted, anytime, anywhere, and lets enjoy the time we have.
Yeah, he said "I don't wanna start climbing too slow..."
Strange. I wouldn't wanna climb too fast and have a gust "take that wind". The closer you are to the runway on a take off during a wind shear or engine failure the better.

I love your videos!! You have inspired me to be a pilot!!
Very good video and very good advice. Thank you
You're about famous now in the aviation community!
Welcome to Corpus! I am one of those kiteboarders you flew over!
Awesome! You're lucky guys!:-)
I lived in Port A for a while. there's a unmaintained beach south of there that you can drive on called big shell and little shell and my friend found like 200ft of rope that was like 4 inches thick that washed up from a ship.
That area has a great view. I fly to mustang air field often from KBRO. Come on over to KBRO next time. Great view..!
Cheers.
Awesome video. I can't wait until I have my certificate so I can do this too.
Come to SoCal and you can do this north of San Diego between La Jolla and Camp Pendleton.
Serious good time.
Hi, I don't know much about aviation and I came across your channel quite by chance, but I'm finding it very absorbing. Could you tell me what the coloured square display is just right of centre on your dashboard and what it does please?
It's his GPS unit. Probably a Garmin 430
Thanks Rob.
I did all my primary flight training for the Navy at Corpus Christi!
I just bought my my first headset the lightspeed zulu 2 just like yours, so happy😀😀😀😀
outstanding headset!
I had seen your unboxing/review about them and I knew exactly that I had to get this headset
Great vid! I don't see Brooke anymore flying with you. Maybe I shouldn't ask, but are the two of you still together?
Yes, just both busy!
That's good! Keep flying!
Glad to hear, I'm new to your channel. My heart dropped when I read his question. I love to see happy couples even though I prefer to stay single
I am really digging the brown lower-panel for some reason instead of the usual black/gray.
thanks for sharing. great video
Watching it after 5 years still appealing in 2021
Love the videos man! BEST way for me to be as close as possible to flying until flight school, (love the various amounts of camera and positions). Love from CLT! lemmie know if you ever fly out to KJQF...... happy and safe flying.....
a nice tour.

What an amazing videoc
Detective Wise is now a celebrity.
How do you like the Stratus? I see Foreflight now supports the GDL 39 wonder which one you prefer?
Enjoyed the video. One question I had though is since it appears that the airplane was operated beyond gliding distance from land were IFD's carried on board?
I'm going to get a lesson and try it out. You're really making me want to fly.
Hmmm... I'm wonderin' if there may have been a touch-n-go on that deserted stretch of beach that got edited out of the video??? :-D Seriously, always enjoy your videos Josh!
knowing saint jo island, you would definitely not want to land on the beach but there are a few strips that are still good to land on there.
I never did a T&G, though I was very tempted. San Jose Island has a good bit of obstacles in the way on the beaches, but go two Islands to the north, and the beaches are wide open. Next time!

did yall see the old airports out there along the coast!! super cool bit of history out there!
I've flown along the beach before (long time ago) and it is tempting to drop down low but like you said that doesn't give you much time for emergencies.
Correct. I don't like doing it, unless it's over a wide open un-populated beach where I'm planning to put her down.
Too cool, Port A is my home town.

I noticed you were using the Lightspeed headsets, I was wondering how do they compare to the Bose A20s if you've used them?
Are your plans to go for full license commercial? How many hours do you have by now? Thanks for sharing videos by the way!
Mr aviation you need to come to the Bahamas and do some island hopping. Very beautiful scenery down here.
Clinton Thomas:
I hear Staniel Cay is crazy....😍
What other islands would you suggest??
The Abacos, or Eleuthera
Do you carry any floatation device when flying over the water?
flying over the beach like that is a lot of fun. Is that scholes field? It does not look like how I remember it.
very enjoyable
Not me but people in bay city Michigan go up and down the coast at about 100 feet. It's super cool to do
Awesome video! How do you fund all your flying?
Being that the beach is maybe 100 yards wide, there's no need to fly over the ocean. An engine failure over the sand would not have prevented a water landing; even with a crazy onshore wind. Not to mention, setting down on land is probably a better idea than ditching.

I fly a lot of small planes with a/p. That's a good thing on long trips. But after all hand flying is more fun ;)
What video editor do you use?
love the vid
Josh. What program did you use to make/edit your 'MrAviation101' intro? Thanks
He uses Adobe Premier 5.0 I believe.
Great video as always. You're so level headed and responsible. Just one question.... Does Brandon have a RUclips channel too?
What headsets do you use?
we did the same thing with my dad where we live but we did it around 10-15 feet above the water and at poind we did go below 10 feet
Nice!
Is this Galveston Texas?
You know it’s a good flight when you have to climb to get to pattern altitude
What sunglasses do you have
2:35 Super random question but at that very moment what would you do if the engine went out at that low of an altitude?
joe leeman either ditch in the water or head for the grassy dunes. Either way the airplane would be toast, but we'd most likely walk/swim away with minimal injuries. The worst thing we could do is try and put it on the beach. We'd kill several people at least.
You get a lot of people notice you on the radios.
I wish we could go below 500 ft en-route in Germany. *dreams*
I'm sorry this is unrelated to flying.
But the thing you said about the empty land. they always say the world is overpopulated, but when you're flying there are always huge pieces of land just empty. And I just always wonder why they don't build there.. or grow food or whatever.
and its really hard to build on barrier islands.
***** It's not just along the coast. Wherever you're flying, sometimes you can fly for hours above empty land in the middle of nowhere.
The idea of the world being overpopulated has more to do with logistics than physical space. A certain amount of land (how much depends on farming technology) is required to produce enough food for each person, for example. Everyone on earth could live in Texas with about 1400 sq ft per person. The world is not overpopulated.
+Mark Russell And where would we grow food, sanitize water and conduct other activities needed for survival?
I think when the weather gets warmer i'm taking amanda and brooke down there :-D
Do you own this plane or rent it or have a partnership with your buddy with it ?
Come up and fly over Lake Texoma on a Summer weekend afternoon. You may see some idiot actually skiing his tires on the water. Cubs, Taylorcraft and other taildraggers doing it around the Oklahoma side of the islands out of Highport Marina.
Is Brandon logging duel given?
Sun's out, guns out.
I'd be terrified to fly below 500 feet considering you are nearing RC aircraft altitude. Many people fly their quadcopters off of the beach. I'd like to think that most of them would be smart and descend when they see an airplane coming, but you never know.
yo i stay at the hotel on the very right of the screen at 2:36 its called the dunes and you can buy the rooms as a condo
how much does the Cessna 172 ( in good conditions )?
price?
Richard Simmons needs his tank top back...
on the jersey shore that would be a no go as we'd be dodging banner towers
Not to mention if you lost an engine! Too many people!
Keep up the great work! If you ever hit the east coast I'm buying lunch.
what is the significance of "500 ft and below" ? why not 600 ft?
Government.
I'm confused how you're heading north over the Gulf of Mexico when the shoreline is on your left
He's on the Texas side of the Gulf, not the Florida side.
your videos are.really good, but i think they should be longer in time.
not to sound gay because I'm not...not that there's anything wrong with that, but you are looking pretty buff there Josh
I tracked your flight :)
all i could think about during this video is them flying into a drone
Why you all wear raybans?
because raybans are cool
Because they look cool. Us pilots have an image to uphold.
Why not?
I thought your comments at the end were excellent.
What do they do with all this land that they dig out?
They probably sell it to Dubai for building sky scrapers...
desert sand is not good for that
Can I subscribe off my iPad?
is that guy your boyfriend?
No. That's his friend. He has a girlfriend, and her name is Brooke
lol we both have girlfriends....
Subliem.
