Then I started scrolling through the comments like one does and saw your comment liked by me some time in the past (I guess, 2-3 years ago when I was binging SNL) 😂 It's like that Memento movie.
I would lay odds that he decided to improvise a slap, if Fred hadn't broken by the end of the sketch. It is their God given mission to break each other up every time and it wasn't working in this one, he was breaking himself up, instead. He had to bust out the "heavy artillery". I think Fred was too busy wrestling with the accent and was off his game and distracted. The slap helped, but still didn't get the reaction Bill intended so he actually went in and tried it again. God I love that man.

bill hader slapping any dude and looking at him like that is my sexuality also john mulaney in the stefon sketch where he's a piss artist/lawyer in like mesh and patent leather
Bill's jaw clenching is so hot!! And Fred Irish accent reminds me of Matt Lucas. I love how both Bill and Seth love to be drrty with Fred, whenever either of them gets paired w/ him. 😊
Well it’s a blend of the general New England accent (Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire, ect) and the quasiCanadian accent you hear in the Northern USA states (like Wisconsin or Minnesota) along the border. Both accents are pretty distinctive and neither is really able to over dominate the other, so this is the blend you get when you put them together.
Life long Mainer here - 95% of the accent I hear in this sketch sounds more like Minnesota, 'ey? Although they did get the Barharbor pronunciation correct. Eh et, I recon - bub.

I always forget how Bill Hader slowly sort of drifts to a Boston accent lol. Fred definitely didn’t expect that slap. I’m guessing Fred did something similar during dress rehearsal & that’s why Bill did it. You know just a little revenge between friends. Man I miss these days of SNL. I haven’t even watched one episode since Bill Hader left.

literally clicked on this thinking did he just sent this to the casting director as his audition
Fred, usually so good with accents, met his undoing with the Maine accent.
Yeah, that sounds more Canadian (stereotypical), but broad, inaccurate accents are a thing on this show.
@Bekky Darling Ayuh.
I have to agree. I don't know what I was hearing - kind of a northern stereotype backwoodsman but not New England.
