- I don't like where this is going so I am making changes at My Self Reliance in 2024 that are probably going to hurt my channel.

You cannot possibly know the mental freedom that you give to a 78 year old woman and her dog named Cali. My Cali is a shabby 23 pound lurcher a year younger than yours. She watches without a break for glimpses of your dog and she also greatly looks forward to your cooking interludes. What you do is so meaningful in a world where so much is meaningless. I could be wrong but I believe this channel has been your mainstay over the years and you have many faithful viewers including myself. It’s been a rough year here in the United States for many of us especially financially due to inflation and wasteful government spending. I would like to be able to be a Patron but every penny counts at this time. I hope you don’t leave us in the dust after all these years. I’ve enjoyed living in the sunshine part of your channel and have looked forward to each session . I live now in a world of hardship and don’t need to see any more. You’re a great and talented man and I hope you don’t change the content of this channel.
Agree with your comment. I feel no guilt watching ‘free’ content because I know that I’m the product that’s bringing in the cash and without me and thousands of others, the content creators’ cash will dry up. It’s already a symbiotic relationship (create content I want to watch and the ‘influencer’ can make money from the time and effort I spend engaging with it), so skimming extra off the top with a paid membership is unpalatable to me. There’s also an irony in the term self-reliance since this content creator relies on revenues generated through loyal followers to fund their life.
I’ve been watching since the beginning. My life is winding down (I am 74), but I can appreciate your philosophy and creations. Society always changes, but I agree that we face some enormous challenges. Don’t underestimate your audience. The good, the bad, and the ugly can be part of the channel as it is part of life.
Your life shouldn’t be winding down at 74. Get exercising, and supplement appropriately. Live your life.

Of course our lives are winding down when in our 70. Don't be so ridiculousand arrogant. This earthly existence is a mere passing thru into our eternity. The sooner we're out of these wretched earthly bodies the better. All they do is deteriorate from the day we're born. God gives us 70 -80 yrs on this earth and that's sure plenty time to get your life in order for eternity. We are born to live eternally not to wrong as nany days as posdible out of this earthly existence. Im rejoicing as I near my call to eternity, cant wait. Ive lived as much usefulness here in this damned world as I care to live. My treasure is stored up in Heaven where it can't rot , rust or depreciate, where it can't be destroyed or dtolen. Shawn I want to thank you for all you have taught me these past several years by doing and explaining how to do on a homestead. I moved hundreds of miles away from everything I have known and bought a homestead eighteen months ago. I have put in a vegetable and herb garden. I have a pole barn for working and a small outbuilding for storage. I made sure there would be enough space in the event something catastrophic occurs in our country or the world that dictates a safe sancuary for our kids and their families. I attribute all I have attained to your tutelage and example. I am still learning from you and will continue watching your content for the duration of my life or for as long as your channels continue. You are an excellent teacher, a wonderful husband and father, and thorough steward of the land and wildlife. You were put on this earth to guide multiple people to a self reliant life in my opinion and I will be forever grateful you took on the task with ferver.
So beautifully said by a true loving parent that will go to any length to prepare and protect their family. This is exactly what I wish to do for my siblings and their families. Few are onboard and too many more don't realize what we stand to lose and how we should prepare. Shawn is indeed a great teacher, put here for us to come upon, learn from and take heed. He was my very first subscription here on RUclips all those many years ago. Brava to you for taking action. You've inspired me to finally do the same. Thank you. That's what it's supposed to be, but don't be naive, there's not a single ''off grid'' RUclipsr. They all rely on technologies so that you may watch their videos.

I agree with you Lynn. I cannot help but feel a bit used when RUclipsrs diversify into more monetisations. That in itself divides people. I do appreciate Shawn’s opinion but don’t agree with all he says or does. Sadly, I don’t think I will continue watching.

What drew me to your channel was the construction. I know that's unsustainable, since you only need so many structures on your homestead-but what keeps me coming back is the fact that you're living the lifestyle I want to live. Only I didn't know it, until I started watching you. You've opened my eyes to a way of life that's natural, beautiful, and sustainable. I feel the way you're living is how humans were meant to live-even if it is just a romanticized version. Thanks for all you do, and happy new year!
I'd love to see him build a larger workshop in the area he was pointing towards. Also a guest cabin somewhere on the property for when family visits, would be a good project.

He is a great builder but he doesn’t know everything about life. God does. Read the Bible it will tell you how to live a happy life. I like his channel too but hate his doom and gloom talking. He is not a man of intelligence just a man of opinion. It is dangerous to follow him for teaching about life as he does not seem to be able to give any positive help. He is paid very well from RUclips he does not need more money from people that can’t afford it. Do what I do turn the mute on and just enjoy the view and watch him do things around his place. And I ask again where is his wife? Why does he do everything by himself? I think he needs to talk more able his own family. Where are they. God bless

The "romanticized videos" are pure art. As a photographer that's what brought me to this channel. That and the quality of the sound in your earlier videos building your first cabin. I watched because I admired how creative you were/are. It's easy to miss 'seeing' your own artistic expressions.

I sub to both channels and yes the my self reliance channel can be more romanticized but honestly its completely unique among homesteading/nature channels due in large part to your next level cinematography and editing skills that youve honed through the last 8 years.
Im not sure you realize this but youre an excellent story teller and movie maker on par with National Geographic. I believe it’s because of this that you have became so popular so while I understand possible frustration with how the channel looks the cinematic quality brings people in and maybe makes them get a bit closer to nature.
Ultimately its up to viewer to be able to seperate the natural beauty of what you are showing and the reality and harshness of nature. As a long time viewer im assuming your audience is smart enough to realize the difficulties and dangers of what you do. Nonetheless keep up the exceptional work. Ill be watching both channels.

Plus the educational content of what Shawn does.
His hunting for food is very educational. Done very ethically and everything is used to enable him to live in a difficult environment. Something people should find educational in itself

@@timschaefer86yes. I suggested awhile back that shawn should have a video of just his nature shots. They were usually mixed in with his homesteading so if you werent an avid watcher you could miss them. His drone footage interspersed with his framing shots are something not many youtubers are doing and are quite impressive.
You mentioned Patreon so many times this video you have 2.15 million subscribers I understand you want to provide for your family but I’m sure you earn a substantial income from RUclips thanks for your content

Many of us that are not in a position to actually live the self reliance life actually DO like learning the skills and methods, even if we are unable to live the life style. Learning is always good.
I've been following you from the beginning. Love your stuff. I won't pay for content. Your following is based on YT content. Please keep that in mind moving forward. You obviously have to make your moves based on revenue.
You are an AMAZING teacher ~ whether you are explaining things with words OR when you demonstrate without any words. When you are just filming you working without talking, you definitely are showing us "how to". Your relationship with Cali is priceless and adds volumes beyond words. Everthing you have done is worth watching. The integrity you have in your heart pours out to us who watch and THAT is why I watch almost ALL your videos. You are calm, contemplative, move with intention and focus, and intelligent. Your wife is very fortunate!

Hey Shawn, I've been a subscriber for many years now and it's always been the quality of your videos that has kept me sticking around.
I get what you're saying about the romanticisation of the the idea of building a cabin in the woods. However, as a guy that lives in the midlands in the UK, a Friday video that shows the incredible flora, fauna and evnvironment of a country that is so drastically different to what is available on my doorstep is 100% enviable. Your ability to craft a visual story which engages millions of others around the world is not a bad thing and personally, doesn't stop me being engrossed by the garden, or the other myriad projects that you have bubbling away in the background.
Your channel will naturally evolve over time and whilst i don't necessarily share the same level of pessimism around the fate of our fellow man (some are of course lost causes...), this doesn't stop me from recognising the good ideas that you have regarding self reliance or attemping to implement at least some of them with the limited space/resource around me.
Keep doing what your doing, as long as your happy doing it. It's always worth remembering that it's a privilege to look into your world and you don't owe us lot a thing!

For many of us caught up in the daily political strife of our nation we do not need another history lesson or additional political commentary. we can find all we want elsewhere. This is our romantic escape please keep it simple and light and continue the great craftsmanship.

I've been a general building contractor for 30 years, when I watch this channel I know all the background work and struggling you went through to get each task done. I know the reality of drilling holes with a brazen bit when there are battery tools readily available to you. I know what it is like to hand nail everything because when I started as a carpenter only rich guys had nail guns in the early 80's. My wife on the other hand likes to watch the "Hallmark" version of your story and I'm fine with it because it is what has sold her on me getting a place in western Wyoming to start becoming less dependent on power, water and groceries provided by others.
Shawn, I found your channel when you were building your first cabin (2017 I think?). I've been absent here for a few months due to illness, other projects and things. I finally found a Saturday to sit down and really pay attention to your videos starting with this one. I don't know if you'll even see my comment. I have learned a lot from your channel as you try things and reflect on what worked or didn't work and what you would do differently. I hope you'll stay on RUclips for those of us who are encouraged by your efforts. The fact that you have been sharing your journey for so many years is proof that a person CAN step-by-step create a new, more self reliant life.
I watch your channel Shawn as its an alternative life and lifestyle to mine here in Europe, and one I will not have. I will continue watching both RUclips channels but I dont use Patreon at all as personal policy. As it leads to everyone wanting paid subscriptions. I already have one on RUclips.
I think you'll be surprised how societies can be inherently resilient and not just self reliant.
What you are doing is v. admirable but millions of people can't live in a Canadian wilderness because the size of national populations and preserving nature itself, requires the majority to live in urban areas.
Keep being self reliant.

Personally, I love both your channels. I dislike podcasts and I don't have the money to 'Patronize' anyone. I'm old (63) and hubby is 7 years older. We are plodding along trying to get our 'off grid' property livable, but it's probably not going to happen for us unless someone younger gives us a LOT of help. Living vicariously is all I can do, for the time being.
OH MY LORD, WOMAN...you are NOT old!! There are so many more important things to which a pessimistic mindset is appropriate. Get OVER yourself and GET MOVING!
I like everything you do and have missed the building part of your channel. I have been disappointed in the split and the amount of info on Patreon. Unfortunately, I can't pay for that channel, and it seems that you put the best parts on that.
I love everything about your videos. The beauty, solitude, and watching you framing and finishing the cabin. And Cali, what a sweet pup.
Personally, I’d prefer to see you be more real and communicative on this channel ! A good number of people are having hard times and patreon is a channel that costs money. With the size of the loyal audience you’ve amassed on this channel and platform the amount of people appreciating your input and standpoint far outweighs the romance/ fantasy outlook viewers. Again just my personal view

Respectfully, I disagree that this channel has been romanticized. We see the hard work you do and realize many of us don’t have the physicality to endure the work you have put forth.
I grew up on a small farm where we were self sufficient. Now our government has raised the cost of feed, taxes our land, taking land, rules for transporting livestock, they are making it so difficult to try and live peacefully and be self efficient.
The romance behind this lifestyle is seeing your hard work pay off. If you don’t grow it, raise it, hunt it then you don’t eat; it’s hard living but more mentally fulfilling. You take care of not just your family but friends and neighbors as well.
You’ve reminded me of survival skills I had totally forgotten and have caused me to seek more knowledge and information.
Been watching you for a long time, I must say all your content really helps my mental health and PTSD, thanks for that it’s priceless 🙏

Hi Shawn. As a young child I loved off grid with my mother. I KNOW how hard it is to subsist in the wild and when I watch what you now call "the romanticized" version of your life, I can more or less fill in the blanks. But perhaps since I've lived it and understand the hard work involved, I hardly call what you present as "romanticized". I know hardship, struggle, depleted energy, and the aches and pains of hard work against Mother Nature, and sometimes I actually pray for your energy and strength. You are the only person that I can really identify with on several fronts, so I thank you for your presentation.
So all I can say is that it has been an amazing journey with you over the last 10 years or so and I applaud you! Watching and loving precious Cali has lightened the "load" of empathizing with you. I support you in whatever choices you feel necessary to make and will ALWAYS think well of you.

When you post a video, you cannot control what the people watching that video will get out of it. Maybe they are learning something. Maybe they are just relaxing. Maybe they see you and are grateful that they don't live in the woods. What they experience is about them and not about what you are doing.
I'm on a fixed income. I spend part of my day following folks like you on RUclips. Increasingly, those folks are shifting over to Patreon. I'm just able to pay of my internet service. I know you make more money from Patreon, but I can't afford to support you or any of the others I've been following.
In 2024, I think I might read books. I'm deeply disappointed in my RUclipsrs becoming greedy to the exclusion of people like myself.
I am right there with you. I won't pay for content either. I think possibly he may end up disappointed because many won't pay. Besides just getting views and comments and likes makes them plenty of money. You tubers are getting greedy. Even the kind ones

YES! More instructive content is what I am looking for. Why?... because you explain things in great detail and are a VERY good teacher. I would love to see more longbow and arrow making videos, and using the longbow / self bow to hunt for deer and other game. More log building and gardening videos too. Thank you for all that you do, Shawn. You are in a great place to weather the horrible storm ahead.

Hi Shawn I want to thank you for the update and heads up about the channel and all of its challenges! I'm going on 58 and on a fixed income and wish I could afford to pay for patreon also but at this time it's not feasible! I've been watching since the beginning and have gotten do much from everything you share and look forward each week in anything you share as it is a breath of fresh air to enjoy ! This world is really getting extreme so it's so beneficial we have someone who takes the time to share self reliance resources that you just can't get from a book !
