This is my updated photoshop Dodge and Burn tutorial that can be used in fashion photography, portrait photo retouching. It make skin retouching nice and easy. This is my updated tutorial video as I felt that my previous one I did not explain things properly.

I thought I share my way of doing it :) So first thing is that you actually don't need to fill up the layer with 50% grey. You can just create a blank layer with Soft Light blend mode and start brushing white or black on it. The effect will be the same, but later if you want to generally darken the whole layer, you can do that by just clipping a Curves adjustment layer to that. If you fill the layer with grey, then you can't darken or lighten the whole layer because in that case the whole image is affected.
Also you can do the dodge and burn on the same empty layer, you don't have to do it on separate layers. If you want to lower the effect, you can lower that in the blending options. Go to the blending options and find the Blend if part, and you can adjust the darks and highs there. Also you can increase the effect with a curves layer clipped to it, so basically you don't have to use two separate layer. And if you use just one layer, you can do the dodging and burning very quickly, because in that case you can just change the dodge or burn by pressing the X key, so you just quickly changing what color are you brusing, black and white.

This is one of the easier methods for d&b. I may start using it so thanks for sharing. I know I will get carried away and have like 5 dodging layers and 5 burning layers but hey, that's what group folders are for.

fill a layer with black and put the blend mode to Color then you can use a contrast curve over that.. :)

People plz help) When to use healing brush? Before D&B or after?
Thank you! Just wondering, what was the brush hardness % set at?
Normally very soft, most people use it at 0% hardness. But of course there are some situations when you want to use a harder one, but not for usual d&b for beauty stuff with pretty soft and diffused light.
So basically you do now use Frequency Separation? Thanks
I love you tutorials and i'm a huge fan of your work but i don't get how using the black and white layer is destructive, especially if you creating it on a new layer and it doesn't change the pixels. A lot of photographers i follow use a help layer, if you could please clarify this, that would be great
Otobong James I think what she means is using a black and white adjustment layer can give you inaccurate color. So you will essentially be dodging and burning areas that don’t need it because your eye is fooled from the adjustment layer. It’s better to use a hue and saturation adjustment and then lower the saturation to 0 and if you need contrast, add a curves adjustment layer

what I dont understand is the purpose of editing on 50% gray layer opposed to just directly... whats the difference
do you work with colours before or after retouching?
Is it really necessary to remove the dark area below the eyes? I mean, how much is too much? I feel like that was part of her character and it felt a bit wrong to see it gone.
