This is definitely one of my favorite movies of all time. You can never go wrong with Robert Duvall and Michael Cain. I loved the lion and how she came to her "cubs" rescue and died protecting him. Never fails to bring tears to my eyes. Such a creative story and so well written. Great reaction! Enjoyed watching with you both.

I love movies with a couple of "old guys" in character roles. They can turn the the charisma on and off like a light switch. It's so much fun to watch them turn it on and steal any scene they're in, even the whole movie and just walk away with it.

Duvall sleepwalking, wearing flowing nightshirt, and cowboy boots while carrying a toilet plunger is a highlight.

This is 1 of the best movies ever!! Especially the restaurant scene, well every scene with Duvall and Caine is great. And the moral of the film is so important.💖💖

Second Hand Lions was such a great surprise when it came out. Glad you enjoyed the movie.
The real Second Hand Lions included Garth and Hub.
Fun Fact. The cartoon strips were drawn by Berkley Breathed who authored Bloom County (1980-1989, 2015-current) and Outland (1989-1995) which were set in middle America, probably Iowa.

Can you believe this movie was considered a box office failure? I never understood why. This is one of the best movies I ever saw. The McCain brothers reminded me of my Grandfather and his bother my great Uncle. I going to date myself here a little bit but, they were WWI Veterans as well as other wars and conflicts. There stories of battle used to fixate me for as long as they would talk. I miss those two old men. My father was a D-Day Veteran and the liberation of France. I could listen to him for hours as well, and I miss him every day.

A clip of the bar scene came popping up in my youtube feed for the last 3 months. The day before yesterday, I finally got a hold of the movie and could watch it. Had to put off on the reaction video for the time being - was a good decision, so I could enjoy the movie fully spoiler-free (apart from the bar monologue).
Needless to say: I like this film very much and can only recommend it to each and everyone. I'm still a bit stumped how I could miss that movie back in the day (well, not really - I exactly know why and who is responsible for my questionable choices on movie-going back in the day).

A wonderful movie. The uncles remind me of a few people I've been lucky enough to know. Have you watched Robert DuVall's 'Get Low?' It's a strange rich film where he stars as a grizzled old hermit who lives in the woods near a small town. Lot of philosophy in it.
By the way, the pig was removed from the film after it bit Haley Joel Osmont.

Another underrated classic from much earlier in Michael Caine's career was The Man Who Would Be King...with Sean Connery...I think you folks would probably love it. ✌💯

My grandfather, a grumpy old Cajun who was born in the mid 1910s, was physically strong until the end of his life at 98 though he suffered from alzheimers toward the end. It actually made him really dangerous, because if he got confused and frightened he'd fight people. He once broke an orderly's nose.
I remember my mom getting a call when Papa was in his late 80s to tell her he'd been bitten by a rattlesnake. He was out working the farm and, because he'd had heart trouble and was diabetic, my Granny used to come check on him and bring him water when it was hot, and he thought it was annoying she was coddling him, so he crouched down in some plants to jump out and scare her. Put his hand on a rattlesnake, which bit him. According to the doctor who called my mom, when he asked Papa if he knew what kind of snake it was or could describe it so they could treat it with the right antivenin, Papa pulled the still twitching snake out of his pocket and put it on the exam table. When his appendix burst he took some pepto and went back to work, and nobody knew he had anything worse than a bit of a stomach ache going on until he passed out in the barber shop three weeks later from sepsis. He used to show me all his scars and tell me stories and end those stories with important lessons like "this is why you shouldn't drive a tractor barefoot if you like your toes."
Years later, after his mind had mostly slipped away, we visited him in the nursing home for his birthday and my mom baked him the biggest, sugariest cake. I was in my teens then and aware Papa was diabetic, so I asked her about it. She just said, "If he dies from from birthday cake he'll go out happy."
All that was to say, these two lunatics driving a plane upside down into a barn as their exit strategy made a lot of sense to me even as a kid.
