I worked on this film and this is the ending I remember being edited together first. Next thing I know the film is being released with a much different ending. So to all those folks who thought I was crazy when I said there was an "alternate ending" to this movie, here it is! Thanks Tiberius!

I have to say, I like the theatrical ending much better! This original ending was nice -- especially to see Walt married with two boys of his own. But the theatrical ending, with the son of the Sheik, meeting the "son" of the two legendary brothers -- and finding they were both raised with the same stories -- really wrapped up this movie nicely. "They really lived!" Great ending.

Same same here! Just 72 here. I joined the US Army at 17, retired from said Army at 19, the rest is a series of tall tales, adventure, misfortune, tragedy, world travel, and general fun.
Born an Rh baby & grew up in West Texas, got all the dieseses a kid could get and survived them all. Had an old grand daddy, he was much like these 2 characters. Only he was dirt poor.
He taught me the basics about life.
How to track, trap, and cook things.
How to sharpen & use a knife.
How to use a child size 22. Pump rifle.
I learned to play poker and how to shake a man's hand & how to greet a lady. I listened to his tall tales from his youth and his travels as we sat at his campfire. He taught me a few things about how men should act.
He was worn down and only had one eye left and it was bad. He once drove my father's car into the lake trying to drive it. That was a sight!
I think of him when I watch this movie.
He liked to play his harmonica & drink a little wine. He ended his days herding sheep around Uvalde Texas where he was born. Blessings to you Grandaddy Elliot, where ever you are now. Thank you. I understand now.

      1. The Ukrainian Legion is getting fed into the battle line very quickly. No training, no cohesion, no esprit-de-corps. You'll just be a replacement and probably not even know enough Ukrainian to get on the radio effectively.
      2. Then people will start dying. Maybe in your squad. Odds are, as a replacement, you'll get told off for recovery detail... stacking the dead like cordwood in the back of a GAZ.

Additionally there are so many UK/US volunteers they are now folded into their own battalion (aside from SF teams).
As for your second point, yeah I get it I just don't like sitting on my ass in the rear while my boys are out there helping people. Hell just last week my buddy sent a video of them pulling civilians out of rubble (alive) from a missile hit in Odessa or some city.

What you choose to do after your hitch is up is entirely up to you. You're a man and must make a man's choices for a man's reasons. And you're **certainly** not gonna make them to make me happy, right?

This is the first time I've ever seen the original ending. I wish they kept the foreign legionnaires' salute in the theatrical ending as it would have been a nice tribute for their years of service. I'm fine with the grandson and great grandson arriving by helicopter to affirm the sheik's side.

I loved the ending that I've watched on video rental, television and now digitally own. This ending, which I've never seen is good. I'm not sure which one I prefer. This original or the one in digital, I like both, which I wished they could have merged the two versions, and have the adult Sheik grandson with his son, accompanying the old Sheik, and translating to the adult nephew & family, about how he felt about the two adversary brothers and how both grandson and nephew chuckling about the stories told to them forming their character.

I've watched this movie so many times since e I saw it orginally at the theater and I rememeber that when it was orginally released it did not have much advertising about it..not like many films that don't hold candle to it....I own a copy but still watch it evetytime it's on my streaming channels....it's like the original Angel's in the Outfield, Field of Dreams and the climate that give hope using humor and down to earth feelings The movie Hope Floats is sort if the same...in the end everything e is well...and we all are wanting that in life.

I haven't thought of this movie for years, and here I am, watching the end and sobbing as if I'd just watched it all over again. It was an amazing movie. I did like the theatrical ending, though.. with the helicopter. There was a bond there. Two boys, growing up with the same stories, just never believing it was anything but stories. But this.. this was a proper send off to the men. Both for Walt, but in two different ways.

One of my favorite movies of all time. Me and my grandma watched it when it first came out, and it still brings back so many good memories. It was such a a well developed story, and had a great message behind it. I will say I kinda prefer the theatrical ending, but I do wish they had included the teenage punks all grown up and respectable in that version. It would have tied up the whole thing nicely to have seen them. Cool to see an alternate ending to a movie that's very near and dear to my heart, for sure, though.
