About 5 years ago I made a point to not stop or ease off and "push through" to maintain my fitness year round, and discovered I quite like winter riding. The key for me was realising that there is a difference between being "warm" which in deep winter is unachievable and just not being so cold its uncomfortable, once you find that balance its mostly happy riding.

I am a 100% "Roadie", but if ice and/or snow come along (or leg injury for that matter) I will go out on my old mountain bike. It's sooo comfortable, it's like riding around in an armchair and the snow and ice simply add to the excitement. If the cold is bothering you that's because you're still wearing your warm weather gear. I suggest 'thermal overshoes' which stop the air flowing through the vent holes in your shoes and also keep the warmth in. Winter leggings are a must, for me at any rate, in the colder months and definitely in the snow and ice period. A second pair of gloves (I use ski gloves) to go over my cycling gloves and I am as warm as toast. The turbo looks great, but you can't beat the exhilaration of being out in nature irrespective of the weather conditions. (i.e. fresh air, wind, rain, wildlife etc.). Purely my humble opinion. Great videos Katie. Thanks for all your hard work!!
Hi Katie a good video if l get wet from the rain l dont stop you get cold nothing beats riding a bike on the road country Side takecare have a good weekend
Ride 5 days a week all winter in rain, snow and ice. 300 miles a month. Never miss a day Just change to my gravel bike with 45north ice spike tyres. Not a problem 👍😊
Agreed on indoor training and cold weather. I bit the bullet a few years back and got a Wahoo Kickr Bike. I waited until Wahoo had a sale on refurbished bikes. That saved some money and it had a full warranty. Love it!
Wear a thin baselayer under your heavier baselayer, the thinner absorbs most of the sweat keeping top baselayer drier. The two layers also help to trap heat, look into builders gloves,. cheaper than cycling gloves
After commuting to work in freezing temperatures and arriving with extremely cold and incredibly painful ears, I now always cover my ears on a cold ride.
As often as our tendencies align, I'm rather surprised to say that I feel different about the autumn/winter season; In fact I quite like the feeling of battling the cold, dark windy weather, more often than not I am going to be doing this alone as there won't be many people apt to follow me around. Still, I enjoy it, I feel charged and rather motivated by it; Typically I would hike longer, lift a bit heavier and go for longer evening walks, other than cycling. I don't experience any sense of discouragement or deflation. If i do feel a little be down, something might be up that's unrelated to fitness. Either way, I feel grateful that you are spending some time here with us; Never did I take it for granted! 😄😊 👋 🍂💨
Loved your ideas! ❤ I only do running outside in winter, cycling is always on trainer (both my bikes are not suitable for studded tires, so cannot…). However I ordered a mountain bike this weekend, hopefully it will be delivered by Christmas and I will take her out for a spin, 🤞🏾hopefully in 2023!!
I visited your country last month. I got to ride in the Cotswald. Very beautiful. Struggled with yall not driving on the right side of the road, but overall, very nice visit and looking forward to another cycling holiday there maybe next year! Cheers.
Bonus winter training tip: Go smash up your local climbs. Great way to stay warm when the weather isn't. Speaking of which, I have an early morning ride in 30°f weather tomorrow. Time to follow my own advice 🥶
About 10 days ago I removed all the hanging bike bags off my ancient Body Sculpture BC5700 exercise machine and started doing 10 miles/day on it, everyday. It's so old, Tutankhamen last used it 😮 Stuck a HomeBargains gell seat cover on to save me 🤗 Group run on Saturday around town. Don't wear black tops on the road - motorists don't see us 😖
I just carry on the commute all year and elongate it accordingly in the evenings - do a "hill of the day" and stick to an hour max as fast as possible. Invest in a good jacket and some Sealskin gloves. Keep hands and feet dry-ish. Clear eye wear. Good lights.
Yes, consistency; that's my chief problem right now. Oh, and about cafes....the only one within 50-odd kilometres from here is just 250 to 300 metres from my front door, so that's out. Katie, you won't believe this but I bought a Saris M2 smart trainer about August LAST YEAR and I have only used it once - I fell off it!!! How embarrassing! Fortunately, my car's bonnet saved me from any damage. You see, the only place I can set up the Saris for riding is in my garage AND I have to set it up each time I use it. I didn't really think it through when I bought the Saris, I'm afraid. You know, in all the years I've been riding, I don't remember ever having cold feet. Cold hands, yes, perishingly cold in fog once but not the feet. Anyway, another very helpful video, Katie, so thanks for that.
It was about zero degrees (celcius) today here in Finland and it was fine. Absolutely LOVED it, actually. I have a warm gilet and then just thermal undershirt, long sleeve shirt, thermal long bibs and covers on the tips of my riding shoes, and obviously gloves. I'm totally fine that way. I guess I was a polar bear in my previous life or something but this is literally my favorite time of year. It's the last moments here to ride a road bike before it starts snowing and really getting icy and I have to subscribe to Zwift again, so I'm enjoying the heck out of it. Also plus side? Less, almost no sweating at all unlike summer time which is wonderful, I absolutely detest sweating. Also almost 4k euro for a turbo trainer? LOL yeah no. I'm fine with my Kickr core and bike setup.
I think this is the worst time of year for cycling In Finland. Not much daylight, gravel roads are rotten and the 0-5 degrees with humidity feels worse than -10C. Well, I might change my mind when pushing through deep snow with ISP:s...
When the temperature drops below about 45F/8C I wear snow skiing goggles. I’m sure it looks totally goofy. I do not care. The goggles keep my eyes from watering which is the main aim and I think it helps me stay a little warmer.
I generally find that when it gets cold like o celcius or minus 1 to 5 the legs gets sluggish and it is way harder to pedal. Also the glasses seem to fog up due to the face covering. The feet get the coldest😮
I seem to recall seeing you ride trails, in snow, on your mountain bike. Don't want to take your mountain bike out and get it filthy? How about a BMX cruiser, maybe with a coaster brake? That's what I ride in the winter. You can actually turn an old mountain bike into a BMX cruiser, also.
Can't stand doing any sport indoors, even if it's windy/raining/snowing etc. On windy days I stay in the valley for shelter. I had a cold-feet problem which I have now resolved... with the activated-charcoal sachets that recreational downhill skiers put in their boots... toes now as warm as toast ! If it's icy I'll go for a run or walk in the woods instead.
We have a Freezing Saddles Challenge starting on 1 Jan. Ride at least 2 miles everyday for the 1st 80 days of the year. No real prizes but tons of fun and you get to meet new people.
That trainer looks amazing. I hate my trainer its choppy not smooth and doesn't have same feel as a bike, but sadly that bike is way out of my price range. But if I do come into extra cash, I would gladly invest in that trainer.
Sorry but I disagree, when you stop your body get cold. It then takes you a good few miles to get warm for me. Complete the ride then have your coffee stop/cake.

I lived in Milwaukee, Wisconsin for 6yrs. 10F feels warm after riding in -40 which is something a LOT of people do there

Indeed ! Plan a beer stop also works. And come back to home is really challenging.
@@yannickb.9237a good ride to the bottle shop to use your front basket.
That's living .
If it's icy at all, don't risk it.
Not worth ending up with a broken collarbone etc !
Flight to the Canaries leaves in a hour or so Katie ❤

I’m soft and hate being rained on. I love a good Zwift session when it’s bucketing down 😂

Cafe stops are ok, but the best stops are pub stops! A couple of pints halfway round a ride always go down well! Carbs, innit...😀
Some great advice for riding when the weather turns this time of year. Thanks.
Indoor exercise bike for me until next at least May, good luck out there.

I feel your pain, early mornings are now chilly 20 deg C, gotta wait until 9am for additional 4 deg C.....ahhhh Florida-chill

I love this tip: stick to a familiar route, perfect 👌🏾

A 15mph up Dovestones would be amazeballs 😆
My winter tip: embrace the cold. Also: studded tyres, pogies, ski/snowboard helmet and goggles. Layers. Flat pedals and looser shoes.
Embrace the winter it's never as bad as it looks through the window and you'll adapt to it I tihnk my bike suffers more than I do
This year it's always been bloody windy on the tops above Dovestones!!

Cold feet time 😬dare I recommend, once again, the Galibier Fire Feet socks? Work for me every time and money well spent 🥰
Reaaallly?! Ok will have a look!!

As I'm getting older I'm more of the better weather fraternity...can't do the bike cleaning etc but i just fight thru the bad weather if it already
Indoor all the way 😊😊 do you still use your wahoo fan?

Katie, in really cold days I cannot have a cafe stop mid ride cause I get too cold when I come back outdoors 🥶

Yess I have had eye freeze before and it's painful!!!!! Goggles might be the way haha
The bun was up, so we know Katie put in some serious effort.
That training bike looks proper mint. Expensive?

Feet and hands are the key to comfortable riding in the cold.
My feet get too cold. Riding with frozen feet I hate!
Something I enjoy is bringing a thermos of hot tea or hot chocolate.
SAME!!! Feet and fingers... I feel like being physically sick when they are cold ahaha
Hiya, what outdoor winter clothing are you using in this video please?
I only cycle in the cold if I have to work etc.have road to work in soft snow ok but ice no no..
Winter's the same for runners.... weather dictating the routes and type of runs lol...
Treadmill dominates in winter... :D
Be careful, I hit a pot hole in the heavy rain and came off. Cycling much more fun in better weather.

Good idea about riding flatter rides however in Devon it’s almost impossible to find 😂😂😂

I like it but got to be able to do Zwift / turbo otherwise don’t force yourself on to ice!!
Wow VeloEdge was busy considering they only do drinks and cake. So much Rapha kit…
Have you tried mywhoosh?

Have you seen the videos I did on the Tacx Flow and Tacx Neo 2T? They are more affordable and work great. Linked in the description :)
@@KatieKookaburra thanks. I'll check'm out!
Great tips … ta very much! PS: Only 146 days until spring … Hold Fast! 🚴♂️🌞
Do you move your trainer out of the way when you're not using it?
How about a hot water bottle or a heated jacket, may be go on holiday
Why did Ribble drop you?
Type of trainer?
Move to Queensland Australia 😂
Try CX
I could watch this on mute but I love your accent. Also I guess the tips are legit??? Lol.
Step 1 - Zwift! 🤣
Fulgaz for me now.
Anything that gets you training go for it but for me I LOVE the community on Zwift. Nothing better.
I'd add, knowing the road at the start of the vid...please don't ride one handed down there. You're asking for trouble. Stay safe.
Not to hard to dress out there when its RARELY below freezing. Plenty ride all winter and are lucky to see days above freezing
tip 1: book a flight to spain
tip 2 :enjoy
hate to poo poo on the British riders here, but that ain't winter hahaha
It is if you live in the UK!
Sorry but I disagree, when you stop your body get cold. It then takes you a good few miles to get warm for me. Complete the ride then have your coffee stop/cake.
Zwift! End of
The weather is crap and I make it worse, by checking the weather in Majorca, just to depress myself even more...........
I did EXACTLY the same thing this week hahaha. Looks bloody lovely out there at the min right?! 😢😢
Time to get back on the mountain bike and put the muddy gear on....deep joy....@@KatieKookaburra
