- In this video I compare, across 11 games, the performance of the laptop RTX 4070 and RTX 4080 against a desktop RTX 4070.
This will give us an idea on how the supposed same GPU class for a laptop compares to its desktop counterpart.
Is Nvidia pulling the wool over our eyes with their naming scheme?

I made an averaging error in my final chart. It should read mobile 4080 98fps, desktop 4070 97fps and laptop 4070 60 fps
Do you think Nvidia has the mobile GPU naming scheme wrong? Should they be pushing more watts to the GPU if the cooling is sufficient?
Oh, they have it wrong all right, but they did it on purpose. While the GTX 10 and RTX 20 series were close to desktop levels of performance (previous generations had the M suffix on the laptop GPUs), with RTX 30 series, that's no longer the case, and the RTX 4070 is such a rip off compared to even the desktop 4070, that the laptop 4070 may as well be a 4060 Ti.
I really wish AMD put out a Radeon RX 7800M GPU, becuase the laptop I'm getting maxes out at a 7700S because AMD has nothing with more than 8 GB of vRAM...

Well, actually they did give a gap of 25 Watt for boosting your laptop performance. My laptop rtx 4080 manages to keep 2380-2400 mhz boost clock mostly all the time in turbo mode.
But yeah, they should call it 4070 Ti(m) based on the core count and performance.
As an 4080 laptop owner the naming could be more straightforward, but please God no more heat/power lol I have a small fusion reactor as is
Wow, it is surprising that Laptop RTX 4080 with lower TDP beats the desktop setup with RTX 4070! I always had impression that gaming laptops throttle a lot. That's a world picture change!
On the most part it did have an advantage, even if it was slight in some games. It's that 1% low that bothers me, what do you think causes that?

Wait till you realize that during pascal and turing the mobile gpu's were very close to desktop versions.
it's not surprising, it has more cores. The only times it loses is when a game it's bottlenecked by the CPU. Test them in 4k and the laptop version would win almost every time.
price & lack of competitions plus intentional wrong naming schemes vs desktop all contributes to current gaming laptops for buyers. EU needs to step in , for at least nvidia names for mobile cards as year after year they still do it

agreed, I think governments need to stop this dishonest naming. They want 70, 80 and 90 in the name? Fine, then they'd better add some letter to it like they did during M are to clearly diffirentiate them from the desktop GPUs, OR just call them honestly, as these are still basically desktop GPUs(almost the same specs) but named 1 tier higher than what they actually are.
Nice comparison between the three cards! I think the main problem consumers have is the price gulf between 4070 and 4080, the latter is just too expensive. I have both mobile gpus in different laptops (Legion 7i and Acer Predator Triton 14). The price difference between both was considerable, it's a real pity there isn't any more competition in the GPU space to keep pricing more competitive.

Maybe in 2024 they'll announce a mobile 4070 ti to cover the gap between 4070 and 4080 on laptops. No sooner than CES 2024, at the very least

I just bought a 4070 gaming laptop for 999 and for that price I'm pretty happy with it
RTX 4070 would've been an excellent card if it was priced at $450 and the Ti version should be $100 with 16GB and the 4080 should have 20GB and a bigger bandwidth for that premium $1200 price Greedyvidia asks for. Even the RTX 4080 struggles to handle ray tracing at 4K so as to make the 4090 the best one for your money.
I sniped an Aorus 17H last March 2023 with 4080 and i7 13700H for only $1400. Couldn't be happier! The screen is also 360Hz. Sooooo smooth!

Of course it is not as strong as the desktop 4080 but based on the game I play it even can keep up with my desktop RX 6900XT which is great and exceeded my expectations! And regarding that performance it even stays quite (and) cool! My gaming laptop is an Aorus 17H with I7 13700H and 32 GB DDR5 5200Mhz RAM (upgraded)! Its a beast of a machine for "just" 2300 EUR! But what I don't get is why the 13700H is so much faster (like Ryzen 5900X desktop) than my not that much older I7 11800H. Its about 40 to even 50% difference in speed! 😮
175w is not a laptop component, this whole market continues to be trash

So what are you ment to do when you need to travel with a 4080? I need one for work. Should I just carry a desktop around on flights? To avoid my 1kg power brick? The market isn't trash, it's just not for you.
@@joshroberts4288 The market is for those who need 4080 for work on a plane. i. e. trash. A laptop, as mobile device, should be mostly about energy efficiency and low noise. Just as phones. Sadly, decades of marketing did its work. People buy numbers, even more watts some presented as better performance, no matter if it's +5% fps and 50% more noise.
I think you missed the point. My ""office"" is in a different spot each week. I travel with the laptop. I need at least a 4080. (Super common with engineering). If you've got a more efficient and quieter 4080 please let me know where I can get it. Or should I take your only other option and fly around with a desktop. These laptops are amazing and absolutely essential to anyone who needs them and travels. The market is great.

I guess it would be okay to call a 4080m a 4070 ti, similar to what it is on desktop, and we definitely need a real desktop 4070 on laptops called the same. And of course, "4060 ti" for the 4070m we have now.
I really wish Nvidia stopped this dishonest marketing and either brought "m" back to the naming or called them honestly like they did during Pascal and Turing(1000 and 2000 series).

The entire mobile lineup has had it's name inflated to a higher model that it's not.

Dem 4080 laptop prices though 😬 I ended up going with a 12700H + 3070 for £999.99 which I still think was a great deal, much better value than the 4070 laptops, let alone the 4080 ones!

@@OWNORDISOWNmy last two laptops were Alienware so I got the Alienware eGPU enclosure, but I found laptop CPUs used to be so poor that you ran out of CPU grunt too fast for AAA games, which made the eGPU kinda pointless. Modern laptop CPUs seem like they'll remain relevant a bit longer though...hopefully...

great video, exactly what i was looking for. i ended up picking up a desktop with a 4070 as its much cheaper than a decent laptop with a 4080.

As close to a perfect video as possible stephen. An absolute banger, you basically spelt out all of my frustrations.
I will just say, the 4070ti is like 15% faster than the 4070. So if the 4080m is 5% ahead of the 4070, its not bad since it has similar specs to the 4070ti. But what is bad and you alluded to it, is the 4080's dynamic boost, meaning it probably never uses the 175w it has. Meaning its really closer to a 160w gpu. Infact this reminds me of the 3070ti vs 3080Ti on laptops. 3080ti has more cores but isn't much faster due to lower clocks. Same thing here. 4080m has too many cores for its supposed 175w tdp. Had nvidia given it the desktop 4070 core count they can easily make it be very close to desktop 4070 even at 150w. 5888 vs 7420 is a massive difference.
I am so glad you call out nvidia's nerf to tdp. It infuriates me channels like HUB and Jarrod's tech don't point this out.
Could you also do a future test with bypassing dynamic boost using the 528.49 driver trick? Use that and compare the results. My 3070ti can't realistically go beyond 130w even though its the 150w variant.

For it to reach 175w. Ur CPU gotta be underwolted out of it's fucking mind like 15 or 10w on the CPU for the GPU to us at least 170w or 175w
@@tshimologomolope7185 Exactly. Because of dynamic boost, laptop gpu tdp is a giant lie. Even among max tdp laptops you now need to consider if the laptop oem lets you bypass dynamic boost or not. MSI and lenovo allow it on some models.

If 99% of the time the 4080 doesn't reach 175w, then its a lie. Technically my 3070ti can reach 160w as I've seen it spike up there. Doesn't mean its a 160w gpu. I mean does it make it any better the 4080 can technically reach 175w but basically never will?
Also, oem's are starting to put ways to bypass dynamic boost. I don't know why nvidia doesn't get rid of this dumb feature

Thats messed up. The 70 series laptop gpu's have always been the ones to buy+
They certainly used to be, but when it's no faster than the previous generation it is a total shame. The 4080 should have been the 4070, and the 4090 should have been the 4080. All with lower pricing too. Desktop users have always said that their systems are more cost effective, we don't need Nvidia making it harder for us laptop guys. Still, laptops are pretty powerful these days and I won't be upgrading my 4080 machine anytime soon.

At 1600p the 8GB ram starts to run into an issue. I think 1440p MAX these cards can operate at (4070 laptop, 4060’s 8Gb)

In Canada 4080 laptop is too expensive (around 1000-2000$CAD more than 4070 while 4070 only by 200-300$ CAD costs more than 4060)😢 Considering 4070 almost has 50% more cores than 4060, TGP might be a issue. If both were truly 140 watts 4070 could be a better card :D
Dynamic boost can be its own enemy. I favour giving the GPU its max GPU all the time. We are gaming more at higher resolutions now and the CPU should have less effect.

I have to travel all the time so I carry a mac for work and a laptop with 4070 for gaming, and it goes so well for me, more than I expected. Previously I game on desktop 2080 with 3600 r5
But, how do they compare at stable diffusion?
While agreed the 4070 Mobile is underperforming, you have to factor in, that the difference between both models is at least $700, which simply isn't worth it for that upgrade
I recently bought an acer neo 16 with a 4070, i game on 1440p high to max settings and so far its running awesome, although I couldve bought a 4080 laptop as I could afford it, i backed down because the difference was 600 dollars for a 20% difference (20% after i modded a few things on my acer just to make the gpu run a bit faster) but what do you think?
I got my 4070 laptop at the same price for a 4060 laptop on a deal. So kinda salty kinda not since I didnt lose too much since they are ironically the same if not 15% better on the 4070, but if anything I got a 4080 at home with the tower.

I would have gotten a RTX 4080 laptop, but its like $4000 AUD and the RTX 4070 laptop was $1700 AUD brand new prices. So, I couldnt afford anything better for the price without getting second hand.

Just got a 4070 laptop a few days ago (legion slim 5). Crazy that my 3060 with 12gb vram is outperforming it in the last of us. The price and other components in the laptop made it worth it to me though
I have an acer predator helios with the 4080, its a beast. $100 laptop cooler with foam seals makes the heat problems non existent 😊

The gap between the 4070 and 4080 mobile is too big. I have an msi 4070 laptop which has an 1080p screen and im very happy with it. I'm getting very good performance in 1080p and I got it for £1000. The 4070 mobile is an 1080p card.
I have dell alienware m16 with rtx 4070 and acer predator helios 16 with rtx 4080. The difference in performance between these two gpus are massive. So were the prices, 700 usd more for predator.

So far my favorite is the Cyberpowerpc Tracer Vii. The mech 17 GP2 is the same machine, although Ekuktronics has the Prema bios and can undervolt the CPU. The bios is locked down on my Tracer. I like it because it is solidly built. All metal. In turbo mode the CPU gets into the low 90s. Balanced mode low to mid 80s. It's fairly quiet, has windows hello camera, advanced Optimus and you can water cool it if you like. I have the cooler but haven't tried it yet. Screen is plenty bright and is 240hz. It has an SD card reader which I wanted.
Cyberpowerpc often have sales and 5% off coupons.
The only thing was that the first one had dodgy speakers and it's replacement was giving me a blue screen error. This one is great.
I also really liked the Legion 7i pro and is probably my second favorite followed by either the GE78HX or GT77 titan. I just feel that it is a shame that the MSI laptops don't have advanced Optimus.
The Alienware m18 and m16 ran hot and has that inverted motherboard which I've never been a fan of.

Yeah... this so stupid that Nvidia "4090" mobile is actually power contrained 4080M and so it rolls down the stack. So now we are watching mobile "4070" and it is actually the disappointing power constrained desktop 4060. What makes it even worse is that on desktop also the product tiers were inflated by 1 for each product besides 4090.
no, 4070m is a power constrained desktop 4060 ti, but yes, it's still pathetic because it has MUCH worse specs than desktop 4070. Had they given the 4070m 16GB like one of 4060 ti versions it wouldn't be so bad, but nope - their greed won again.

Dont forget that 4070 is not REALLY 4070. Because when you look at 4060 motherboard its laughible. Its literally 4050 just named as 4060. And comes with 4060 price tag. Mid range is now gone. There is only low end and top end.

Just because of the price, I bought a 4070 laptop, although I know about its limitation due to the vram, I didn't care much since the games that require more vram don't interest me or they would go just at 1080p, although maybe I would regret it if the store where I bought it sells a laptop with a 4080 at the same price

The 100w limit in the 4050,60 and 70 mobile is making the difference much. Meanwhile the mobile 4080 and 90 can run on max power
Certainly the more power the better. The 4080 and 4090 should be capable of 200W and that would help further.

On 9 games rtx 4080m won 7 time .. and lost 2 time.. and by 10 to 15% because of the cpu bottleneck

Thanks for pointing this out. I looked back at my notes and when I was averaging them out I swapped the BF2042 result around between the 4080m and 4070m. My bad. I've recalculated the difference and the 4080m averages 98 and the 4070 desktop 97. I'll pin a comment

it should perform better, as it has more cores. The laptop 4090m is basically a downclocked desktop 4080 with slower memory.

Certainly I'm impressed with my mobile 4080. It is a good boost over the 3070Ti I had previously
1000 and 2000 series were the best era. They used desktop GPUs in laptops(100% the same or even better specs than on desktops) and honest naming, which resulted in laptops being VERY close to desktop GPUs.

New mobile gpus are more powerful and energy-efficient insane moreover powered by AI, so You can pack in a laptop , gpu which it will get a good longevity, just Imagine the impact to have FG and DLSS in the next years, adding this we have FSR 3, open source.... Frame Generation, DLSS have nothing to do with spefications, all 4000 series GPUs had them. But if laptop 1070 was only 5% slower than its desktop version(it actually had *more* cores than desktop 1070), the laptop 4070 is up to 55% slower than desktop 4070 due to Nvidia's greed and the wish to scam laptop users. How is that better than having proper desktop GPU in a laptop?

I didn't say they performed exacly the same, I said they were close. The laptop 2060 used exactly the same chip as the desktop 2060, which resulted in performance not being so far. If it used a cut down GPU like many modern ones or GPUs before 1000 series(M-branded GPUs) it would be even further away from the desktop 2060. Want proof? See GTX 960m vs desktop 960 benchmarks. The desktop 960 is like twice faster. Can you say the same about your 2060? No. Because it was a proper desktop GPU in a laptop.
The 80-90 watt 2060 and 115w 2070 were the furthest away from desktop versions in 2000 series(due to big difference in power consumption), whereas 1650, 1660 ti, 115w 2060 and 2080 were within 10-15% of the desktop versions. In 1000 series the difference was only 5-10% on average for ALL laptop GPUs.
The 4090 mobile is more like a 4070ti and the 4080 mobile is even worse than the 4070 after 30 minutes of gaming thanks to bad cooling on the laptop.
Laptops have better cooling these days can't have a 175w with shit cooling nahhhhh just ain't it all u just have to do is get a small stand on the back to lift it up and it will perform just fine less than 80 or 85c on the GPU and CPU depending on the temperature limit but always limit the temps to atleast 75c or 70c or get it a cooling pad and you'll be fine
@@tshimologomolope7185 Unless you have a better design on the cooling system for the laptop motherboard, or else simple ventilation won't change too much. Whether lifted or not, the mobile GPU will reach 85 degrees when the times are up. You have a test with your friend owns a 4070 destop, your 4080 laptop will outperformance in the first 10 minutes, then tie from 10 to 30, and finally will lose after 30 minutes.
@@oneaugust6204 I get you like Alienware are the worst when cooling is talked about on CPU cooling but GPU cooling is good. Companies I know with good cooling solution on their rtx 4080 and 4090 is MSI, Aorus, Acer, Asus from the few I know
Well if you tune the laptop it won't throttle. My budget nitro 5's 3070ti used to hit 80-85 degrees with just 130w. I repasted and lifted it up and cleaned it so now it pushes 150w and is 70-75 degrees. Even after hours of gaming. Thats with a low end thermal paste. Something like PTM7950 will go even better

Yeah Nvidia really needs to overhaul their naming scheme for their Mobile GPUs because as JayzTwoCents and Jarrod's Tech have said there is a huge difference between a laptop GPU and a desktop GPU. With the laptop RTX 3080 it performs like a desktop 3060 Ti. The Laptop 4090 performs like an RTX 3090. Makes me wonder if the laptops that were tested in Hogwarts Legacy would have faired better if they had a r9 7945HX3D chip in it instead of the 13900HX.
laptop 3080 ti performs between desktop 3070 and 3070 ti actually, in well-cooled laptops that is. It would only perform like a 3060 ti in thin and lights like Razer Blade 14. I've compared the FPS myself.
@@TabalugaDragon I was talking about the Laptop 3080 not 3080 Ti which does perform similar to a desktop 3060 Ti. The Laptop 3080 Ti you are correct that it does perform around a RTX 3070.

Yes, Nvidia should change the names of their laptop GPUs, it just misleads everyone. As for the 7945HX, in my review of the Asus Rog strix scar 17 that had the 7945HX and rtx 4080 the 1% low was 7fps.

I usually trust your reviews but this was utterly stupid. Nobody buys a gaming laptop expecting it to outperform its DC counter part. The point is you can use it on the go how is this so hard to comprehend in 2024? Like seriously we don't care about unplugged battery life of a gaming laptop or how it isn't equal to desktop counter part it's portability on gaming on the go. If I travel a lot of don't wanna game in just one spot the gaming laptop will beat pretty much anything except a hand held. Now let's say for some crazy reason I also want to work on the same gaming laptop now it beats out gaming handhelds. Like come these click bait videos cause you have absolutely nothing else to talk about are getting annoying.

Wow so much good stuff in the comments. I'm a heavy graphic designer Adobe user and testing the ASUS ROG Strix 18" RTX 4080 32GB 2TB i9 14th gen. For this insane $$$, though, does it make better business sense for the long-term to get the RTX 4090 (to get 4080 performance???)? Or invest in upping the RAM... or both?
The step up to a 4090 is quite a bit. Wouldn't the 4080 accelerate your software nearly as well? I would get the 4080 and use the money saved to get the extra RAM if you find you are getting close to using the 32GB up.
@@OWNORDISOWN thanks for the quick reply! Definitely agree on spending money on extra RAM and maybe that's where the perfomance boost lies. Honestly, I don't know. I've spent hours researching but most of what I find is gamer-focused. And in my design world, I'm a PC-user minority LOL. One tech friend said the 4090 is a negligible increase in performance, but another tech said the opposite, that there's a very noticeable difference in multitasking with the 4090's 16GB. Hoping for some Black Friday deals because the prices are insanely crazy across the board. *sigh*
The naming convention isn't that confusing, the 4090 mobile is just the fastest mobile and obviously isn't the same as a desktop 4090 because it costs like half of what the desktop version does. Just picked up a 4070 laptop for 1k$ but just a 4070 desktop card is 600$. The mobile version of everything is underpowered and doesn't perform the same on half the power, but that's to be expected and it's built into the price.

The cheapest 4080 i saw was open box 1800-1900after tax.....
