Just the right time to 'return to basics' in forging and smithing! So many of your 'People' will want to do something with just these tools...or the basic likes of them. I am looking forward to following this project.

should go without the gas forge and use a coal forge to go completely basic. Would be great for the amount of time it takes to heat up the material.

Pfff. Poser. Obviously if he wants to really earn his keep and get completely basics, he should locate some geothite, smelt it in a fire made of pete and bullshit, work the bloom into a function state, infuse it with some carbon collected from the charred remains of his childhood dreams, and forge it to shape with nothing more than the burning of his soul. You hobbyists are cute.
No he should do something with the titanium he has.... Handle or belt buckle or hammer head even a knife would be fine but titanium and revisit meteorite
Lunas Eclipse titanium would be way to light in order to work as a hammer, wouldn't it?

I think that 'back to basics' would be a fantastic series in and of itself. Making basic items with basic tools (or not so basic items with basic tools and techniques) both as an example and to prove that it's not just the tools, it's how you use them.

What I love about your videos is
1. Youre making mistakes because youre still learning and that makes you really relatable and likable
2. Youre always so excited about your work, which is the thing i'm missing from shows like Man at Arms

Alec i have an idea on what you can make in the future is a Damascus steel wordstick or cane-sword it's a cane containing a hidden blade. And keep up the great work
I think that's illegal in the UK. Not sure tho I just remember reading about it.
It's like here in the states not illegal to own but illegal to carry. However there are some state where you can get a permit to carry concealed weapon. I'm not sure if you have that in the UK

I know, right? There are even accounts of terracotta ones and rammed earth (concrete with little cement and the mix packed down really hard) ones, since if you have a month for it to cure you can get it to any granulation you want.
I’m 13 with a small bladesmithing forge , a railroad track anvil and a small workshop. If Alec didn’t do RUclips I wouldn’t be blacksmithing. Keep up the good work

Alec it’s this stuff that inspires people. The large power hammers are awesome but this is what it’s about man. I love watching this and I could watch it all day. This is what inspired me some odd year ago to start this craft and finally people around me want to learn and dude you just give me inspiration and my friends love to see what I can make. They want to learn just like I did. I even am considering making this a business for me because of my love for it. Thank you Alec you don’t know what you do for me and people around this world I love you even though I don’t know you. You feel like a close friend and that’s what blacksmithing has done it’s brought me close to someone I don’t know. It’s more than just moving that steel man your moving people I love you alec never stop please.🔥⚒
Love the hammer by hand projects. Most of us aren't planning on getting a power hammer or press, so watching you work things out by hand is way more enjoyable and educational. I hope to see more. Cheers!

Back to basics, love this. Alot of amature blacksmiths like me dont have power hammers, bench grinders etc. So seeing you do this is great. Showing that you dont need thousands of pounds worth of tool to make a knife.
I startet forging 6 months ago with some charcoal some old bricks a scrap piece of steel a hammer and a pipe wrench in this time i made tongs several knives and even a damascus folding knife! You brought me into blacksmithing!
I like these kinda projects where you make stuff without power tools so you can show that people can do this without expencive equipment ( p.s sorry about my bad english )

Check out Walter Sorrel’s channel, he has a video on making knives without power tools too. It’s totally possible, it just takes time and patience. Just remember in Japan the master swordsmiths make katanas without using power tools :)
I’m 15 and I just made a charcoal forge too! Haven’t been able to try it though because of fire restrictions where I live

As a person who is about to get started with wood working and metal working with no power hammer, I appreciate this video so much!
Now that's what I'm talking about. I don't have all those fancy tools as i am starting this hobby. This will really help me make something beautiful with just the basics and a ton of effort.

Thank you so much for making this video series! I am a novice smith with a little backyard forge and don't have all the fancy tools. I was starting to feel like I couldn't do much without the tools, but this has reinspired me to do what I like to do, which is get out there and move some metal!

Well that sounds like a lot of work! I experienced forging a knive out of an old file on my own. However, I used an angle grinder and a disk sander for that project. Trying to make an edge only with your bare hands sounds impossible.😅😓

Time and patience is the key. And if it doesn't go how you like, take time to ponder why it didn't, adapt the design and move on. And keep on hammering! 🔨🛠⚒⚒👍

I was doing Genealogy research and found my Great Grandfather is a Kowalski. Kowalski (Polish) translates to "a blacksmith". So it can be said its in my blood. I have always loved working with metals (welding) and I am now getting into blacksmithing. Making something from a raw material is something I have always found vastly amazing. And I cant wait to learn more.
I like how Alec is letting his goofy side come out a bit more in his videos. just the little random funny things really adds to the enjoyment I get from watching these videos. I don't even smith, I just enjoy the personality and positive mental attitude, and the creations that are on this channel
In hindsight it would have been the cat's pajamas to have incorporated your touch mark, in silver, into the handle like it is in your new T-shirt. Just a thought.
Sorry for this Silly question, I was thinking what happens if you hand file when steel is red hot? Theory is that the steels softer hence easier to remove? Or will this be harder because the steel will not break/file away.. similar to cutting/grinding plastics?

You remove more quicker because you're cutting a softer material. It's not very moveable/ plastic though, just enough to barely be moved with significant amount of force from a hammer. It's a pretty standard practice, by hot rasping you can use really really rough rasps that normally wouldn't be practical or possible to use on steel (would use them on hooves/ wood) and remove material pretty quickly that way

It's so nice to watch you work a piece of metal, simple knife or not, and make it such a work of art!
Alec, an idea for you: you have a lot of potential for an asmr/white noise/sleeping noise type of show here. I love the videos but i also enjoy listening to the ambient noises of a workshop while the craftsman works, especially as i go to sleep. I'm sure you get lots of b-roll footage of you just hammering or filing, and you just mutter to yourself or make remarks here and there. You put on an amazing personality that i believe is not far from your real personality but letting yourself be quiet and calm and un-showmanly, and just explaining what you're doing can be calming. I'm generally not a big ASMR person but i've always enjoyed listening to woodworkers or knife makers.

Gunlord of Kekistan Boxers! It gets sweaty down there and you move your legs more than you’d think, chafing can occur..
I just generally recommend boxer-briefs for everything, best of both worlds.

This really makes you appreciate blacksmiths from before we had all this equipment to help us.
As a novice (or something like that) blacksmith, when i do forging the only electic tools i use are generally my angle grinder and a handheld drill, so i recognise a lot of the things Alec does in this vid, never even used a powerhammer/press or such. :P
I heat the steel in a coal forge, recently starting making my own charcoal with a friend.
Still manage to make fairly decent knives and such, sure get the job done.

Much as I love watching you doing the super-dooper high-tech bells and whistles Damascus swords, I get the impression that this is where your heart lays. Man and hammer versus red hot steel. Banging away to the rhythm of your beating heart. And it is so good to watch.

You just finieshed up that amazing Kris and now you are going back to basics, trying out making a knife, with no modern tools available at your disposal.
This just goes to show, that you truely have a masters mentality - to be so talented and disciplined; yet you still are humble enough, to know that you need more practice, in a certain field of the blacksmithing proffesion. Kudos to you and keep up the entertaining and informative videos!

Good to see you getting back to the basics as well you're my favorite RUclipsr and the only blacksmith that I watch anymore I've been wanting to explore and find new ones but I end up watching and rewatching every project of yours.... I appreciate your inspiration
This brought a lot of attention back to your channel for me personally. All of the power tools are really, really cool and all, but the most powerful tool in my shop is my KMG grinder, seconded by the angle grinder and the my shoulders. Seeing you work through (although abbreviated for sure) the techniques for moving metal, making fixes, tweaking straightness is extremely helpful for me and I am sure for many others who are just beginning.
I have taken your basic and intermediate classes by the way and will also be taking the tooling class. Thanks for bringing it back to the basic tooling (heat, hammer, anvil and file) that is required knowledge before heading into the power hammer and press.

I finally got my coal forge going last weekend for the first time and some this weekend. Made a couple s hooks, some heart keychains and a decent knife out of an old wrench. Burned some steel, made some mistakes but had a blast the whole time and cant wait to learn more.
