I had the same thought. He really nailed or hammered the Bob Ross feel in this episode. Don't mind my puns. A good teacher doesn't focus on mistakes but uses them to their advantage and that's what he did this episode.
I absolutely LOVE that you're doing more episodes showing the basics, and easy projects for beginners like myself. And the way you were saying "gentle blows, very light blows", I dare say, you're the Bob Ross of black smithing
Your voice on the copper ring video took me back to when I started digging into your content right after I found your channel! This is a fantastic video! Loving getting back to blacksmithing! Thank you!
These tutorials are so great Alec. I'm going to be linking all of these for my metalwork students to watch and practice creating next semester. Time for me to practice making 100 by September!
I found your videos about 2 weeks ago. I have always have had quite an interest in becoming a blacksmith. My brother and i want to build a forge and really do what you do. Your videos are fantastic. thank you. they are just making me want to do this more.
I'm 32. I've never followed any RUclipsr. You just got me: your work ethic got me. Keep up the good work man, always a pleasure to see any craftman keep working his basic skills. Bien le bonjour du Québec!
I’ve been marathoning your videos ever since your collab with E&K, and you’re awesome no matter what you do, ever though it is terrifying seeing a fellow brit around my age who is so accomplished and driven.
That copper ring video brings me back. That was the first video of yours that i watched, oh so many years ago. Its been amazing ever since that day and even better when you started your daily steele.
I have watched many different people practice their craft, and many of them have done a great job of making me want to become a blacksmith. But you Alec? You sir make me believe that I could. I look forward to watching all your videos, and do so with my two young children (5 and 8). You are awesome, and my whole family loves watching your videos. Keep up the good work!
The Faram fuller that you show in this video is called a convexed butcher tool in chasing. Basically anything that has a leading edge and one flat edge is a butcher tool. As where chiseles have two bevels and of course fullers everyone knows what those are :-)great video Alec good to see you getting back to some hand forging...
I have gotta say mate I am loving these "filler" episodes. You are really getting back to your roots and to why I started watching your channel in the first place. I hope you keep them up. The big builds are great but these small tutorial vids should be regularly mixed in I reckon. Keep up the good work!
Thank you so much for the more instructional type videos much like you're older videos. I do love the project videos, You make some absolutely incredible pieces so please don't stop. For beginner blacksmiths this is almost gold. The basics are the most important. You're a great teacher and I appreciate it very much!
Love the complex stuff, love the basic stuff. The 437 part, left-handed explosion pattern raindrop Damascus tuning fork videos are fun because we get to see you learn, and your produce stunning one-of-a-kind pieces. These more basic videos are the ones that get me fired up to light my forge and make things. Keep up the good work!
Alec I have just become aware of your video's and am very much impressed. I'm 73 and just starting to do some forging using the most basic of tools. At my age the joints get sore pretty easy at times so finding the easiest way to do something in the shortest amount of time is extremely desirable. I am very impressed with the 5 video's I have had the pleasure to watch. You spend a lot of time on technique which is sorely lacking in most other practitioners videos that for the most part merely display ideas. Technique is critical to being efficient, creating less waste, saving energy and muscles, not to mention allows you to make a better product and more $$. I don't sell anything but I fail to see why so many people fail to learn and apply the basics elements of working metal that you demonstrate so well. You reflect more wisdom in your metal working than most smiths twice your age. Having said that I'm curious how old you are? Keep up the great presentations! Sincerely, Ken Weldon.
Hope you're enjoying your holiday here in the USA. LUV your instagram posts of your outdoor adventures! Glad you had these instructional videos ready to post whilst you're away! Thanks, Alec!!!! Much appreciated!!!
Thank you for making those 'easier' projects again! Many of us are just getting started with blacksmithing so it's a great thing to watch and learn stuff.^^
Loving these tutorials! I had already seen the copper leaf ring tutorial and was getting deja vu when you started wrapping the ring up to make the pennyscroll.
Love the little "Oh I'm a youtuber" bit. you always fess up to ideas and thoughts that could have been just a smidge better. The self-deprecation really makes the joke as you are damn good at both youtubing (Is youtubing a word? It is now.)and blacksmithing.
I'm loving that you're coming back to the tutorials and not just making stuff, although you do make some awesome stuff and it's great to watch but nothing beats a great tutorial! Thanks for the content:)
I really love your videos! I've finally saved enough after Bills to finally build a proper forge and I'm looking forward to really getting into it. Surprisingly I have like 5 friends all getting into smithing at the same time.
I have absolutely no interest in blacksmithing but I enjoy watching the process. Whether it is making a damascus sword or leather scabbard or small projects like this sweet ring. You could basically make anything and I would watch it!!! Keep up the great work, love your channel Alec.
I’d like to take a minute to say thank you, you’ve been such a huge inspiration for me with this craft and even though I haven’t really started yet or plan to become a proper blacksmith. I still wanna make stuff out of metal and you provided me with the knowledge and inspiration that it is possible. So again thank you and I’m looking forward to your next video ^^
Bro, your videos are awesome. I’m a heavy fabricator in New Zealand. I made a few rail road anvils for something to do and it sparked my interest but there are next to no options for learning to blacksmith in this little country. So thanks for your great videos, gives me some direction.
Was watching Big Dog Forge making a candle holder and immediately notice he was swinging an Alec Steele hand hammer and sure enough as he turned the hammer there it was the Steele touch-mark
This is cool! I dont know if I'll ever blacksmith, but I still love your videos! If I ever get into blacksmithing, I'll go back to these "beginner videos" (I say that with quotation marks because this is something I think every blacksmith should try)
Step 1 is finally finished. Well, mostly finished. There are still some things I need to do before I can officially drive again. But it’s close! And since it’s close, I can move on to getting my craft tools. Leather and metal. When I can get a heat source set up, I’m damn sure making these and the keychains. Awesome little projects. I’ll probably also attempt a sword because I’m stubborn.
I bought an old second hand vise for not much today. I told the man selling it I'm in the process of setting up a smithy and he liked it so much that he gave me a pair of blacksmith's tongs. How nice.
Alec. I love your deep end epic projects but I must say I'm loving the last couple of vids on back to basics. I have a blacksmithing course this weekend and it's great to hear your advise for the beginner... it's really helping me focus on aspects I need to consider. Keep up the great work.
QUICK TIP, with your acid etching on damascus steel, after you pull it out of the acid bath don't put it straight into the neutralizing bath because it can put splotches on the steel. wash it with water first, then do it and it can make the pattern far more clear.
Alec, I think you're stepping in the right direction for a new branch of your brand. This is a golden opportunity to start engraving steel or even making engraved mokume gane (I think that's how it's spelled) jewelry
With all the offcuts of Damascus steel, you should totally make a viking bearded axe, also called a Skeggox, and try and have one pattern for the blade, another for the main body of the axe head, perhaps another pattern where it fixes to the handle too. Or just a big mix-up of all the different patters you have laying aroung. It would be really awesome to see all the different patterns you have made all combined into one item
OK, so good morning, evening or even night, i'm an apprentice black smith in france and i'm aint going to lie, this video + the one where you explain how to make a leaf ( and do a lot of them) will help me a whole lot, i know this video is almost four year old, but i can't thank you enough. Thanks again and have a good one. PS: sorry if my english is bad and thanks again
You could coat it with shellac. It's used a lot in jewelry with metals that tarnish the skin (like brass, bronze, copper), it's very resistant. It would change the finishing, but clean fingers and shiny rings go well with each other ;)
As a marine corps engineer I'm used to old salts just telling you the one way something is done. It's nice seeing someone my age learn and fail and make mistakes, helps you understand why things are done the way they're done and why other things don't work. Keep up the good work brother. And keep pushing yourself.
Alec I LOVE these "beginner" videos! Love your big projects too, but it's awesome to see what kind of stuff I can work on as a beginner and ideas on what to practice to get better.
These little videos are great Alec! A good reminder that no one is born making Damascus masterpieces, you’ve got start with the simple stuff, which often isn’t all that simple once you begin to learn the subtleties to doing a really good job.
Can't say just how much I love this type of video. It's instructive, fun, helpful and fantastic. This and the leaf video are some of my favourites from you yet.
You've officially become the Bob Ross of blacksmithing, I love these small project vids! Keep 'em coming
Andrew Holt I've been saying this for over a year!
I had the same thought. He really nailed or hammered the Bob Ross feel in this episode.
Don't mind my puns.
A good teacher doesn't focus on mistakes but uses them to their advantage and that's what he did this episode.
There are no mistakes in blacksmithing. Only happy accidents! 😂😂😂
Reminds me of Alton Brown
Forging happy little rings
*PRODUCT IDEA* make and sell damascus coins with ur logo on it so that ways people can buy a piece of alec steele damascus
saiaddict dude, that's flipping brilliant!
Alec could even date them and then do runs, get the 2018 coin this year, 2019 with the touchmark and a different design next year, and so on.
Yes please
Great idea.. too bad that Alec doesn’t work for commissions, or does he? He’s always selling stuff?!
I once suggested that he did casting of the mini anvil that he made and sold those. Seems like he's all but gone away from the casting stuff.
I absolutely LOVE that you're doing more episodes showing the basics, and easy projects for beginners like myself. And the way you were saying "gentle blows, very light blows", I dare say, you're the Bob Ross of black smithing
I don't know who's more excited, Alec for having us in the workshop or me for being there
Can you PLEASE make more vids like this and the leaf one
Lucas Murphy agree!!!
I think he is away as I think these videos are filler. These are amazing though
Jimmy is never going to get that hammer, you like it too much. You're going to have to make another.
Your voice on the copper ring video took me back to when I started digging into your content right after I found your channel!
This is a fantastic video! Loving getting back to blacksmithing! Thank you!
BRING BACK *THE ALEC STEELE SHOW* PLEEEASEE
saiaddict yessssssss
yes please alec!
yes yes yes yes YES
PLEASE alec!! those livestreams were what got me started blacksmithing! Please bring them back
YES!!!!!
These tutorials are so great Alec. I'm going to be linking all of these for my metalwork students to watch and practice creating next semester. Time for me to practice making 100 by September!
I’m curious to know if you actually went ahead with it or not. And if so how it went
09:15, solid gold! Alec you are hilarious!
I found your videos about 2 weeks ago. I have always have had quite an interest in becoming a blacksmith. My brother and i want to build a forge and really do what you do. Your videos are fantastic. thank you. they are just making me want to do this more.

45 seconds in to the video and I'm already happy to be here. Thanks for the basic projects again.
10/10 Self deprecating humor.
The Truth im so funny even my jokes laugh at me
Nice work actually enjoyed seeing something different thanks 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
I’ve been marathoning your videos ever since your collab with E&K, and you’re awesome no matter what you do, ever though it is terrifying seeing a fellow brit around my age who is so accomplished and driven.
Please make this a series for aspiring blacksmiths.
I like that you moved back to your old format. This is really nice to watch.
Well done alec, the copper ring was one of the first videos of yours i watched, you've come a llong way
That copper ring video brings me back. That was the first video of yours that i watched, oh so many years ago. Its been amazing ever since that day and even better when you started your daily steele.
I really love this video format. Good stuff. Love the other stuff too, but the instructional stuff is my favorite.
I am really enjoying these tutorial style of videos. You are very inspiring to me. I enjoy the work you do so keep it up.
I love these types of videos. Your normal sword and knife videos are alright, but this is the reason I started watching you in the first place.
Just got my forge yesterday. These videos are just in time!
I'm loving these beginner, tips and tricks videos!
Thanks for showing some smaller projects that novices can get some practice on, they're really helpful
I didn't know you watch Alec Steele! Thanks for sharing that info for those of us that didn't know.
David Fleener yep almost every video :-)just don't comment all the time if I don't have any value to add...your welcome for the info God bless
Really enjoying these small, quick forgings. Really informative.
I have gotta say mate I am loving these "filler" episodes. You are really getting back to your roots and to why I started watching your channel in the first place. I hope you keep them up. The big builds are great but these small tutorial vids should be regularly mixed in I reckon. Keep up the good work!

With me just starting to blacksmith these starter videos are so helpful. Alec you posted them at the perfect time. Please do more of these
Alec I have just become aware of your video's and am very much impressed. I'm 73 and just starting to do some forging using the most basic of tools. Really enjoying the throw back to earlier videos of yours on more general blacksmithing. 👍

Thanks for doing these beginner videos Alec. I'm starting to think that I could actually do this.
Loving these tutorials! I had already seen the copper leaf ring tutorial and was getting deja vu when you started wrapping the ring up to make the pennyscroll.
One ring to rule them all also these vids are sooo helpful thanks
Love the little "Oh I'm a youtuber" bit. you always fess up to ideas and thoughts that could have been just a smidge better. The self-deprecation really makes the joke as you are damn good at both youtubing (Is youtubing a word? It is now.)and blacksmithing.
Do what Alec tells you, “...just say no to crack(s).”
I'm cracking up
At least Jimmy can't say the Hammer is the defective
I'm loving that you're coming back to the tutorials and not just making stuff, although you do make some awesome stuff and it's great to watch but nothing beats a great tutorial! Thanks for the content:)

My Nephew and I love to watch these videos. When you take time to show step by step how to do them.

Loving these "back to basics" vids Alec
I have waited SO LONG for you to make jewelry!! Would love to see you do more!!
Was watching Big Dog Forge making a candle holder and immediately notice he was swinging an Alec Steele hand hammer and sure enough as he turned the hammer there it was the Steele touch-mark
That ring sold like wildfire! Well done!
Just wanted to say that I really enjoy these videos on the fundamental skills, going into details about what can go wrong and how to fix it :)
This is cool! I dont know if I'll ever blacksmith, but I still love your videos! If I ever get into blacksmithing, I'll go back to these "beginner videos" (I say that with quotation marks because this is something I think every blacksmith should try)

Redmar Kerkhof great score on that one
Alec back to his roots!! You must be feeling nostalgic super cool!!!
Thank you very much. Good tutorial on the hammering thing. tks

Excellent explanations of all of the steps for us newbs. lol
Love your vids!

Yess finally I’ve been wanting to know how to make one!!
I’d love to see you make some sort of medieval wall torch with these leaves or some sort of wrought iron candelabra.
Alec, I think you're stepping in the right direction for a new branch of your brand. This is a golden opportunity to start engraving steel or even making engraved mokume gane (I think that's how it's spelled) jewelry
I love these videos that are focused around teaching because I want to set up a forge but cant where i live
Awww i loved this. The geeky, detailed stuff really makes it easier to understand.
I love your basic videos with al the extra information! Keep up the good work Alec!
This is fantastic. I think you have become a better teacher since your older instructional videos. The great editing helps too!
Awesome work love the beginners touch to the ring and video
Love blacksmithing videos, and youre so insanely posh it makes them even better! LOVE that youre enjoying and profiting from your hobby!!
Great demo Alec. This will be on my agenda to make.
I have to say that I’m very pleased with you going back to things other than knifes. Also thank you for the tips.
I think I need to try this. I have a gift idea for my wife for her Birthday.
Love those type of video! Lots of knowledge, nice work
Nice to see you teaching again man.
Boy, that copper ring video was cool. Baby Alec is wild.
Really great camera work guys. The close shots are awesome.
I am loving your return to fundamental instruction videos. It is most helpful to us beginners to whom you inspire. Bloody brilliant
I've been liking these simple videos. I hope you keep making them.
With all the offcuts of Damascus steel, you should totally make a viking bearded axe, also called a Skeggox, and try and have one pattern for the blade, another for the main body of the axe head, perhaps another pattern where it fixes to the handle too.

It would change the finishing, but clean fingers and shiny rings go well with each other ;)
I love these tutorials
I'm quite impressed by how quickly you pump out videos with high quality editing.
Awesome Alec! Please make a bunch of these!
As a marine corps engineer I'm used to old salts just telling you the one way something is done. It's nice seeing someone my age learn and fail and make mistakes, helps you understand why things are done the way they're done and why other things don't work. Keep up the good work brother. I like your teaching videos. Thanx for the info.
A ring most definitely deserves the touch mark.
Thanks for good advice, I have been working with silver a while back, but cant wait to start again.
Great job on the video and explanation. Keep up the enthusiasm and great work.
Really enjoying these little projects! Giving some great ideas, thanks! Keep em coming.
That is amazing and beautiful. Thank you for getting back to basics and showing off
Alec I LOVE these "beginner" videos! Love your big projects too, but it's awesome to see what kind of stuff I can work on as a beginner and ideas on what to practice to get better.
PERFECT video for us, yours fans.... we need this ideas, what we can forge with basic skills, few basic tools and primitive "ground forge" :)
Tanks! High quality tutorial!
These little videos are great Alec! A good reminder that no one is born making Damascus masterpieces, you’ve got start with the simple stuff, which often isn’t all that simple once you begin to learn the subtleties to doing a really good job.
