Ain't it a shame that most people can't open their minds to the possibilities of music? They are so used to listening to the same ol mainstream sound of the radio. People reading this right now have evolved musically to the next level.

@@Drizzt_Do_Entreri yeah, where I’m from it was tougher in school because of a language barrier, so most kids only listened to reggaeton and there I was listening to this and Rush and other prog rock bands. I don’t mind it now because it’s just ignorance.

What's great about this particular performance is that Jordan (the keyboardist) had technical difficulty with where his solo comes in after the extended guitar solo and the band is so damn professional, they just keep playing the accompanying parts over and over until he fixes it and comes in. If you were unfamiliar with the song, you'd have no idea and think it's supposed to happen like that. On a different tour date, this same thing would happen to his keyboard again and they gave up trying to fix it and played the entire show without keys.

Guys, you are absolutely right: watching these monsters playing such freaking awesome music doesn't mean other musicians should even compare with them. Music, as it happens with art in general, is not a competition: there's plenty of space for such giants as LTE, and for many others, each on their playing field. But one thing I'm sure of: this quality is what we all should aspire to: just do the best we can in our own field. Thanks for your grat reaction, I enjoyed every second of it.

Checking in from the Shattered Fortress video...
    1. LTE was a side project that Portnoy wanted to do as a variation from Dream Theater style music, but more importantly , with different musicians. At the time, Jordan Rudess (keyboard wizard) wasn't part of DT. The frightening thing is this; they wrote all the songs and recorded them...in...one...week.
    2. As others have said, Tony Levin (legendary bass) is playing a Chapman Stick. It's an invention by Emmett Chapman that's optimized for tapping. This example is a 12 string. More or less, the bottom six strings are standard guitar, while the top six are an inverted bass. If you want to see more of what this instrument is capable of, look up Guillermo Cides - one man band here on YT. You'll love it.
    3. Now that you've broken into LTE, you MUST watch When The Water Breaks, and be aware that they recently got together again to record a third album due out soon!!! Love you guys, keep rocking and see you in the next video!!!

"Who writes that? Who writes such an intricate piece?"
Well - these guys! And while this is the "shreddiest" song on the album, it isn't really the most intricate - that honor probably goes to "When the Water Breaks" from the same album (also performed live at this same concert - the video is on RUclips.) Also check out their reworking of Gershwin's "Rhapsody in Blue" from the same concert - who knew how hard Gershwin could rock! And don't forget that Liquid Tension Experiment 3 was just released - check out a few songs on RUclips (just search for "LTE 3"), then buy that thing!!!
Keep in mind that the first LTE album was recorded before Jordan Rudess (keyboards) joined Dream Theater - at the time Mike Portnoy (drums) and John Petrucci (guitar) were in DT - and Jordan was invited to join DT shortly after the LTE sessions. Tony Levin (bass and Chapman Stick) has been a highly sought-after session musician for decades - he is a permanent fixture for Peter Gabriel and has been for decades. He is currently a member of King Crimson, has formed "The Levin Brothers" with his pianist brother Pete (performing some sweet jazz), and is the founder of Stick Men - (Tony on Chapman Stick, Pat Mastelotto on drum "sticks", and Marcus Reuter on his own "U8" touch guitar, which is very similar to a Chapman Stick)

True story: I was in high school when this album came out (their second and I thought the first one melted my brain) and I almost got into a legit fist fight with a guy because he argued Tool's Anema was the best and most musically talented and imaginative album of all time and I argued this was. Neither of us would give an inch until we were forehead to forehead yelling at each other "TOOL!" "LIQUID TENSION EXPERIMENT!" and had to be physically separated by a teacher. I still think I'm right! Fight me! 😉

As far as talent, liquid is better. Songwriting wise ænema is better.

Son diferentes pero igual de geniales, Tool son compositores que juegan con la mente y liquid tension experiment son habilidad instrumental de otro planeta, ambas bandas geniales en sus estilos, a mi particularmente me gustan ambas bandas y mucho.

Welcome to the Chapman stick! The thing Tony Levin plays since his days with Peter Gabriel in the 80ies.

Their latest album - 'LTE3' - was released earlier this year, their first studio album for 22 years and a killer. You should check out Stick Men.

When the water breaks is one of 10/10 songs ever. Sometimes I don't like Petruccis guitar effects. There is sick amount of them and that sound forgives pretty much everything he does. I know he is so good player. Been listening DT 20 years but sometimes less is more by effects. Don't complain when I saw them in Helsinki and he did very melodic slow solo with shit ton of effects...tears in my eyes. Great song anyways.
