- Hey guys,
Back again with another video.
This time i’m diving into a late Producer and Artist , J Dilla, who I’ve not really listened to before (apart from being in Slum Village)
He has been recommended to me a few times, in Particular his album Donuts, and so I thought, why not start with it, and in turn start a new series diving into some of his work.
This is Part 1 of my Donuts reaction, and as you can tell, I love it so far (Stop in particular blew me away).
The sounds, the layers, the different feelings and settings he is able to create is more than impressive. I look forward to sharing the rest of my journey on this album in Part 2.
Stay tuned.
Thank you for watching, stay safe!

It's crazy that he made most of the album in a hospital bed, with only a low budget sampler, some records and just made incredible album.
Recorded in 2005, finalized in 2006 by Jeff Jank
That's Detroit soul for ya 😉
Congrats for falling for the myth. Still an incredible album though.
It's not a myth his mom solidified that and Shoes. He started it out of the hospital but as he got worse in the hospital so did the sound of his songs. Such as it saying death real in one of the tracks. John Doe could make tracks in 15m so cranking this out is not hard@@DaveDEF82
limitation is where your creativity peaks
The crazy thing is, if you knew the samples you would be even more perplexed at how he came up with what we he did on some of those tracks. If you think he’s crazy now 😆. Him being on his death bed essentially when he did this is just a victory lap to what a genius he was and knew he was, without going out of his way to openly beat his chest about it. He’s a sorely missed artist especially in this renaissance of underground in the overground
💯FAX!
🎯🏆❤️💥
It's such a beautiful album
He went to the spirit realm, doing what he loved to do. This album is a testament to that. Considering his condition at the time, this joint is mindblowing!
Yess! Im so Happy that you're Doing this Review! I am a HUGE Fan Of Dilla!! From 2008 and beyond, I will never stop listening to his Fire Ass Beats!!!!
Donuts is also one of my favorite albums from him and one of the best instrumental albums of all time! 🗣️🗣️🗣️🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
This album so beautiful ❤ happy to see his energy still being received. Long Live J Dilla
This was one of my favorite first listens ever, I tapped into it about a year ago and it blew my mind! I started reading Dilla Time and I've learned so much about him and music as a whole! Keep up the content!
Appreciating your reaction vid on this one 🤘🏽
Dilla foreva
J DILLA, BEST TO EVER DO IT... SUPER FACTS!!!
Fun fact...
Dilla made the majority of this album in the hospital and died days after its release. But him feeling that his end is near he put hidden messages for his loved ones in his music...
For example dilla got a brother called Illa J (dope artist btw). Illa J's government name is John yancey. And john was playing with the idea of becoming an artist but was kinda scared to jump. He often wrote music but never released it. And on "waves" dilla encouraged his little brother to follow his dream by the sample singing "johnny do it!".
Cant imagine how john felt after hearing this when his brother died. Luckily he listened and ended up becoming a respected record artist
Another example is the song "don't cry" were dilla is basically telling his mom and loved ones to not be sad after he's gone.
Theres also a really dope youtube video about this specific song showing the genius of dillas sampling techniques
You talking about Waves made me think of that vocal sample, the way you say the beat pulsates, its like the sample itself is a wave coming, in crashing, and receding over, and over again. Donuts is such an influential album.
Literally!!
The Sample of the track called 'Stop' is from Dionne Warwick - You’re Gonna Need Me. She is actually the cousin of Whitney Houston.
You’re a legend
The way Dilla cut up Jada saying Is Death Real out of It's Dat Real gives me chills
New background looks great. Love you're reactions.
The "Stop" track sample is: Dionne Warwick | You're gonna need me
Is Death Real
@@dominiquejones3805 sublime! 💎
Peace. You've made my day with this review/reaction.
The one and only Dilla Dawg. One of the best to ever do it. Donuts is, nuts!
Just letting you know that your video introduced me to roc Marciano and the alchemist. Thanks for that!
His chops and drums were all him. No quantizing. Add that to the fact he wasnt in a full studio, but his deathbed with minimal equipment. Knowing that and hearing Don't Cry...sheesh!
Contrary what most say he DID do most of this song in the hospital his mom had to grind his 45s and Shoes. His mom said he'd be working and it was hard at times because his fingertips and hands started swelling. She had to literally pick him up and carry him into the bed
That stop with the Dionne Warwick loop is a mind blower!🔥🔥🔥👌🏿👌🏿👌🏿🔥🔥👌🏿🔥👌🏿🔥
I still play Stop and Don’t cry regularly. I love the meaning behind both tracks
And just like that....
My day is MADE!
Your thoughts on the track Waves are spot on.. it was a message from Dilla before he passed away to his younger brother John, telling him to go for it and make music (the sample is saying Johnny Do It)
It's very rare to find artist reacting to instrumentals in this way, and there ae so many to ract to. You may have found a whole other niche here. As producer's, we love when people understand the vibe and visuals we lend to production. Great video! To answer your question, you would definitely be from the eastern seaboard of the US. Either NY, NJ, or maybe even Maryland tbh. lol.
11 minutes in, you haven't gotten to my favourite cut yet... But ANTI-AMERICAN GRAFFITI has been my fav off this album, can't wait to see your reaction to it
Dilla is the General of the Detroit Producers. Top Shelf. After him there’s: Black Milk, Zo!, Foul Mouth, and my personal favorite Tall Black Guy. You HAVE to check out Airplane Mode by Tall Black Guy. It’s not Hip Hop….it’s not Neo Soul….it’s not Jazz….it’s just dope Music.
Love the reaction!
If you wanna learn more about the man behind the music, I recently read an amazing book called Dilla Time that is part biography, part history lesson and part music analysis.
Full of insight and interviews with those who knew him best, and a clear passion for his craft.
Can’t recommend it enough!
Such a timeless album
Beat Tapes/Instrumental Albums are a different Experience! It is very special!!! J Dilla is the G.O.A.T. of the producers/beat makers!!! But there are a lot of albums you should check out!
Here is a video with almost all samples used in the album

Thank you!!!
GOD BLESS THE PASSED, HE WAS THE KING OG BEAT MAKING WITH THE AKAI MPC HE WAS WAY BEYOND HIS TIME MUSICALLY
Legendary
Donuts was basically his goodbye letter to his family and friends. He manipulated the samples to speak for him, since he couldn't really talk.
He was just a God, completely revolutionary for the neo-soul, hip hop, lo-fi hip hop and just music in general really, had a major love for music and he made an unparalleled body of work with experimental funky tracks, his sampling was so genius that it was unthinkable, he really broke barriers with his music. I highly recommend his book Dilla Time by Dan Charnas, his time feel empowers polirhythms and the African heritage of Afro-American music, he actually was from Detroit which is also famous for a ton of Motown artists of colour so that's what he grew up on but he just took everything to a whole 'nother level! Gone way too soon #ripdilla
Stop is sample by Dionne Warwick and jadakiss the jadakiss song is why and the Dionne Warwick sample is called you’re gonna need me.
Quick Hip Hop Story; 1995..I met JayDee bka J Dilla in a studio in NY with his emcee MC Proof.. myself along with Skillz & the Supafriendz had an intense cipher over Dilla beats🔥(we had a beat tape from him with the Pharcyde instrumental "Running" , first, and used to freestyle over it🔥)
I think this is my first time hearing this album too, so this was very refreshing and memorable now 👍

I know i asked before if you can do a review on nas magic 2 album already. If u could check out The Streets Troubled Waters also thanks and keep up the good work like the videos bless up 🙏🏽
Liked the video at 00:00 you already know
Worth noting that as amazing as Donuts is, it’s not really representative of Dilla’s sound as a whole. Would recommend checking out his work with Tribe from 96-98, Slum Village’s Fantastic Vol. 2, and the albums he produced for with Questlove, Ali Shaheed Muhammad and D’Angelo - Voodoo, Like Water For Chocolate and Things Fall Apart are all essential.
Right JDilla Donuts album was inspired heavily by Madlib, and this wasn't his essential sound.
Dionne Warwick you're gonna need me 😎✌️
-Your reaction to "Stop"......... Eeeeexactly... The sample for "Stop" is Dionne Warwick "You're Gonna Need Me". Usher used the same sample for "Throwback"
Check Out A Tribe Called Quest....they discovered J-dilla and his crew called Slum Village
The way Dilla cut up Jadakiss 2 sound like hes saying Is Death Real oN Stop instead of Its Dat Real gives me chills
You gotta review Nujabes now plz!
Time is the sample of Jackson 5 - all I do is think of you
You gotta listen like a dj set. Breaking it up breaks the flow of the record. Everything flows
DBE WORLD reaction needed lmao
Great review. If you're looking for a good instrumental/electronic producers, please check-out the artist "FLYING LOTUS."
You should react/listen too nujabes metaphorical music album if you like j dilla than more than like you will like nujabes music as well.
Plus, when you find out what he sampled for Players by Slum Village…
Where the hell part 2?

Yeah, if you were from the US I could see you being from somewhere in the North East. NY, Jersey, Connecticut, Philly, somewhere in there. Lol.

Fun fact some of these beats was used as bumps for adult swim
I wish she would have the patience to listen to a track without skipping around. Gotta let it soak in...
I do listen to the whole track I just don’t play the whole clip on youtube for copyright reasons 🙏🏾
WE GOTTA DO:
LOUIE- KENNY BEATS!!!!
It's an instrumental producer album made in the wake of his father's cancer diagnosis. He wanted to make something for his father what he always did for others: make them a beat tape!
Do Nas magic 2 album review
