      Montana Grizzly Bear Notice:
In light of the rising frequency of human/grizzly bear conflicts, the
Montana Department of Fish and Game is advising hikers,
hunters, and fishermen to take extra precautions and keep alert
for bears while in the field.
We advise that outdoors-men/women wear noisy little bells on
their clothing so as not to startle bears that aren't expecting
      them.
We also advise outdoors-men/ women to carry pepper spray with
them in the case of an encounter with a bear.
It is also a good idea to watch out for fresh signs of bear activity.
outdoors-men/women should recognize the difference between
black bear and grizzly bear dung.
Black bear dung is smaller and contains lots of berries and squirrel
      fur.
Grizzly bear dung has little bells in it and smells like pepper.
Enjoy Your Stay In Montana !

I remember reading about the Lewis and Clark expeditions where the natives talked to them about the grizzly bear, the natives made the bears sound like monsters and the settlers didn’t believe such stories, they thought it was exaggeration and that their rifles were much better than their arrows and they could take down a grizzly easily. After the settlers encountered a couple of grizzly bears and some got mauled by them, they realized the natives were not exaggerating, rather they didn’t do the bear enough justice. “Shooting at them only makes them angrier” “If you catch one with their cub, its too late, you’re already a dead man walking” were some of the things the settlers later wrote about the bears.

Black bears are 90% vegetarian and their poop is full of seeds and bits of undigestable stuff. Grizzly poop is full of little bells and smells like pepper.

As a kid I went to a school in Northern(ish) Ontario and part of the program was a week in Algonquin park canoeing/camping. The last day we were on our way out, tired, dirty, wet and hungry not making much noise, we just wanted to get dry and eat. We were headed down a small slow moving river to the last lake, we cut the inside corner of a bend in the river, and almost hit a Moose having a snack. I could have hit it with my paddle. A big male, fully racked out, it was massive. We were well inside the danger zone (mid September, so the rut is starting), and being in a canoe it towered over us up to its belly in the water. Then it started to exit the river, and it just got taller, and taller. Thankfully it decided to not smash us into a bloody pile of meat, but JFC, it was so much bigger than I thought it would be. We had seen a couple of cows and young ones during the trip, but this thing was a MONSTER. Seeing some mounted ones later in life, it had to be at least 1400 lbs. Heck of a day in grade 10 at your new school.

I was in northern Minnesota one time out in the sticks and it was about midnight. I walked out to my car and popped the truck to get my luggage out. The dim light of the trunk came on and I noticed something moving next to me on my left hand side mere feet from me. I turned my head and I was basically eye to eye to a moose butt. I'm 6'2" and the top of the butt was over my head! It obviously heard me gasp and then it bolted down the driveway and into the bush...crashing through the trees making all kinds of racket. I'll NEVER forget that.

For everyone saying that there is not scale to estimate the size of the bear, that fence is likely around 4.5 feet tall. That is about standard for a fence you can tie off your horse too. That bear is likely easily 8.5-9 feet tall at a conservative guess. It is squatting with it’s butt on the ground and is still roughly 2 feet taller than the fence. Add at least 2 feet for the length of its legs if it was standing and then math does itself.

If it has claws it has you beat, unless you tend to grow your fingernails really long. Then maybe you might have a faint hope of winning. If it wearing a Stetson then it is Smokey the Bear.

there are normal brown bears too you know, not just grizzly and black ones. There are even bigger than grizzly ones, called kodiaks. Both kodiaks and grizzly bears belong to brown bears. It depends on their size.

Cold and diet: the biggest grizz. and moose in the Alberta record book are out of the Athabaska watershed, just west of Whitecourt. It gets minus 55 below and colder for two weeks at a time. Windfall, 1959, a good year to move to Oklahoma. So we moved to Tulsa. No bears at all.

The cinnamon phase black bear has a color that looks very similar to a grizzly.
