- When it comes to breast cancer your weight matters. Just gaining 8 pounds since graduating high school can make a woman 25% more likely to develop breast cancer. For women who have gained more than 25 pounds, their cancer risk doubles.
Breast cancer surgeon and best-selling author Dr. Kristin Funk discusses why excess fat tempts cancer in your body and outlines the steps you can take to lower your risk when she joins “The Weight Loss Champion” Chuck Carroll on The Exam Room.
This is the fourth of four special episodes dedicated to breast cancer.
Dr. Funk is helping to lead the Let's Beat Breast Cancer campaign with the Physicians Committee. She encourages women to take the four-week LBBC challenge to improve their health and reduce their risk for breast cancer.

At my all time largest, I was 285 lbs. Of course, five different doctors here in North Dakota claimed I'd 'never' lose weight without surgery or medication. They strongly pushed everything on me from metformin to spironolactone to gastric bypass. However, I got fat by stress eating and not making myself a priority. So, pills and such were not the solution, and I refused their 'advice'. These days, I'm 172 lbs. My high school graduation weight (in 1984) was 150 lbs. Yes, I do need to drop another 22 lbs to hit my goal. However, I lost well over 100 lbs by walking an hour a day, eating a plant based diet, and doing what was best for my physical and mental well being. Now that I know my chances for cancer doubles by being far too plump, that is even more motivation to drop the extra pounds. Dr. Kristi Funk? I love her upbeat, happy, enthusiasm and how she presents her research !
That's awesome!! Congrats Jill.
@@therhyme1 Thanks : )
Wow! That’s so wonderful Jill you’ve inspired me! Thanks for sharing, that’s what I gotta start doing is some serious walking. I’ve only lost 15 lbs in 5 months with my whole plant exclusive no oil lifestyle. I’m 52 so I have to add exercise. My metabolism is waaay slower at my age. Thanks for the inspiration your awesome! 🙂👍
@@signorinabohemia3140 You can do it ! : )

I’m a (new) big fan of Dr. Funk and have learned more about breast cancer from her presentations than from any other source. That being said, I ruffled at her statement about not keeping company with overweight or obese people. I understand her point completely, but it really came off in a bad way and sounds discriminatory.
Or, oooooorrrr… get your friends to lose weight with you
Only cuz they eat more and exercise less...
Lol I weigh the same as highschool due to eating a whole food mostly organic plant based diet with very limited processed foods
Interesting….My doctor says the HRT risks outweigh the benefits,. She said HRT is heart protective and that most women will die of a heart attack before they will die of breast cancer. So this video just leaves me more confused.
That's probably true if you eat a SAD (Standard American Diet) if you eat WFPB, you'll reduce both.
Why does she say the risks outweigh the benefits and then present arguments that refute that proposition?
Interesting that she did not mention the difference between HRT & BHRT. Bioidenticle hormone replacement therapy. There’s a big difference in the two.
Female, 60 yo, 5’4”. Is 150 lbs a good weight to have?
Do the BMI CALC
I disagree with you saying more African-American women don’t have access to the right fruit and vegetables you say… no what you should have said was African-American women and Caucasian women Don’t have access , I feel that’s discrimination because there are fat white women as well as fat black women.
Your putting a label on a particular race of women or people
And there is poor minority there is a lot of poor communities the white community the black community , Asian community the list goes on
How can there be thumbs down for this?
Every single person that I know who had breast cancer and either survived or died was thin, skinny. I do not know one overweight person who had breast cancer. This is crap. And I know a lot of people who had it
my grandmama was overweight and a two time breast cancer survivor until lung cancer and Parkinson's took her away. It does happen
My girlfriend passed away from stage 4 breast cancer and she was plant base never had eaten meat of any kind and had a beautiful figure size 6.
Well she also mentioned that people who are UNDERWEIGHT are also at risk so it's not just about the overweight. Plus, seeing as how almost everyone has at least ONE cancer cell in the body or occult cancers in the body, I find what you say to be bit hard to believe especially since I have met some overweight people who unfortunately had cancer, some who survived, others who died from it.
@@lisaarace2951 What about dairy? Eggs? Artificial sweeteners?
They are not saying you are exempt from breast cancer if you are skinny. Only that extra weight increases the risk.
My respect for Dr Oseghale Sunday Herbal Home who freed me from h s v 1 2 torment…!!
