I'm stealing your moth ball idea! I had rats eat right through one of mine, and started to nibble on my other before I caught them and put out some traps!

It's worked well for me so far! I have so many rodents in my house that I can hear them in the walls. The rats I catch or see on camera are so huge they look like they came from a New York City subway. I grew pumpkins a few years ago not seriously (I had just gotten out of a hospital for 74 days) and I just let a bunch of pumpkins grow randomly without tending to them. Every single one had rat holes under/in them. Not a single one of my pumpkins has been touched this year. I like it better than using traps because I feel like the traps attract them. The traps I do have are far from the pumpkins. And I've learned the hard way that when there's one rat, there's always more!

I've also found that keeping the pumpkins 100% covered with blankets detracts them. One year I hadn't put up the mothballs yet and the blanket was getting too small and was lifting up. Once there was space, the rodents went right in. Prior to that, they weren't lifting the blanket up or going under it. Luckily he only took a few bites and didn't like it!
