Sarah's Giants Part 11: Some bad news in the pumpkin patch
So I may have missed the window to adjust. Just tried doing so but may have hurt the root on main vine near stem. Blossom in mine is elevate for sure. Hmmm thoughts? I post a video this am on my channel for reference. Nice video!
I think I did it!
@@JoeDc101 you can definitely still move that. You'll have to cut/release a bunch of roots before moving it so you don't snap the stem. The vine should freely move up as you adjust the pumpkin. If you meet resistance, stop and figure out where the resistance is coming from and don't force it. Do it in the heat of the day when the vines are most supple, and do it a little bit each day. This will make a big difference as your pumpkin gets bigger!
@@pumpkinista success today moving! Thank you!
Inspired me to grow pumpkins.
Woah that first move felt aggressive 😅looks great good luck the rest of the way!
@@elidalton9755 Yes it was! In my defense, I moved it a little to the left before moving it to the right for better visualization of what I was doing. But when re-watching it I was like whoa girl!

You can pick up live traps from your local animal shelters and fire stations so you aren't killing innocent animals fighting to survive like us 🙂❤
Their odds will go up significantly if they stay out of our yard.

Cats dont eat pumpkins
@@sssniperboofygoofy no, but they have scratched my pumpkins in the past!
Ohh
what if a cat gets caught in the mouse trap…
I've had traps set up around the property for quite a while now. So far I haven't had any issues with the cats, but you make a good point. Maybe I'll put a small fence around the pumpkins to deter the bigger guys who can get their feet caught.
Oh no! Get em! 👍🏻
Those cats are not doing their job 😂
Tell me about it! Last year, the cats were the ones that scratched the pumpkin, but I kept them around to keep the rodents at bay. Now they're getting a little soft!
14ft long on May 28th? Where I am, I don't even put seedlings in the ground until 15th May!
Giant pumpkin people are crazy!
Congrats on 1k subscribers! Most people don't realize what it takes to build up a small channel. How are you doing on watch hours? The nice thing that usually happens is a snowball effect and a herd mentality from viewers, So when you get over 1k subs you're probably noticing faster growth and fast growth leads to bigger numbers that causes even faster growth.lol 😊
30LBS a day! Imagine if you injected milk.
😂
P.S. I can tell it's not your first time.
The other good part about burying vines all day is having a ready excuse as why there is no dinner. Sacrifices must be made.

@@DaleHartt If you're not starving every night, are you really trying hard enough?
@@pumpkinista That was almost the first time I thumbed down one of your comments.
Love seeing this! Tried moving some of my vines and I didn’t realize they already made extra roots. Can you go into trimming off the excess vines or leaves at all? I’m not doing the giants this year but just trying to get more female plants and I kept seeing things about pruning the excess males (it’s like 100:1 😅) and leaves too? I always feel bad hacking away but they’re taking over!
I talk about pruning in this video: ruclips.net/video/PaAZ4jx93Pw/видео.htmlsi=is2hRHBtRAUzdQvW I keep ALL my male flowers until I know my pollination has taken, then I will remove them when they're little when I'm pruning the vine, to save the plant energy which can then go into growing the pumpkin. Pruning the males doesn't create more females - it just gets rid of the males that are needed to pollinate the females when they finally do show up! I don't prune any of the leaves. I also made a video on vine layout which is also part of the pruning process: ruclips.net/video/nPBT_xBVvCA/видео.htmlsi=2iOzk9K0uyUFF9MH Hope this helps! Those vines can get out of control quick!
😮wow
This is art
Agreed!
The baby is beautiful! 🎉❤
Me - that is the worst pumpkin I've ever seen. Pumpkin - but you have heard of me.
😂
What do you use for your feeding?
I usually just do Neptune's Harvest Fish and Seaweed for my foliar feeding. I don't like to do it too often because it wears the leaves out. Some growers will do foliar feedings of CalMag, Epsom Salts (Magnesium sulfate), or other products.
Why did your pumpkin abort?
There are lots of reasons pumpkins can abort. In this case, the female flower didn't fully open on pollination day, but I pollinated it regardless. I'm guessing she wasn't ready to take the pollen, and that bad timing was enough for the plant to reject the pollination. A lot of growers have had abortions because of the heat waves we've been having.
Im sorry for your loss. My best looking keeper aborted as well. Normal people don’t know the pain…
Jack Sparrow needs to clean up his lifestyle. ☠️
😂
this is really cool! I have never thought about growing a pumpkin like this before.really good info on the vines.
That pumpkin is going to be huge!
11,000x?!? Each cell makes a big difference😮
That's dark magic
Great job with the detailed explanation for new growers 👍🏼

That’s true love right there!
This is interesting I just started burying my stems 😊
I've been desperately trying to get this and omgg it's soo hard. When it looks like it shouldn't be😭
It took some trial and error, and very forceful blowing!
I am also trying to grow a gaint pumpkin 🎃
Excellent video thank you!
I literally just learned about the mound/ramp technique yesterday. Definitely gotta try that out. Good luck Martha!
Thank you for the explanation!!! very well done and easy for someone who did not understand the process to grasp it!! Looking forward to learning more from your videos!!!
I'm glad it helped, and thanks for the suggestion!
fancy video work!
really looking forward to seeing more of your patch this season!
Excellent explanation of a 🎃vine pattern!
What’s your target date? I just pollinated my first 2344.5 Wallace this morning!
Mid June would be great, but I'm willing to wait until the end of June for a bigger plant. I would prefer to have everything pollinated by July 1.
I bet it's going to be a big one 😊
I may have some seeds from you? Did you grow one named Whitty? or Mitchell?
Yes, that's my seed! Whitty is my last name, so that's part of its official name, but I also give them their own names, Mitchell being one of them 🙂.
@@pumpkinista It's late but It will go in the ground soon. I plant 3 acres of regular pumpkins so I was late getting it started.
Let me know how it goes! You should still be able to get a decent sized pumpkin, and possibly with viable seeds for next year.
I have the same vine burying routine but I don’t leave the pots. I currently have no life lol.
It's a lot of work! Once the roots get established, I sometimes remove the pots if I can get to them easy.
Thanks! do you just keep spreading out all the secondaries? Sorry for all the questions. I’m just kind of confused when the vine starts growing how to keep it orderly and what to keep it what not to keep so I appreciate your advice and I’m watching closely.
Yes! Great question. I will try to address it in my next video with a diagram. The easiest way would be to keep the secondaries perpendicular to the main vine and have the secondaries keep growing straight for about 15 ft if you have the room. I use the bamboo skewers to guide them in the direction that I want.
yes please do that in your next video!! much appreciated 😊!!! does it ever go past the 15ft (the secondaries you train to go out perpendicularly)? and how do you know which female you’re going to pollinate?
@@aniamatz1830 I usually stop at around 15 feet because of space limitations. If anything, I may make the secondaries closest to the pumpkins a little long since it's felt that those vines closest to the pumpkin provide it with the most weight. I choose my female based on how big my plant is. I like it to be at least 12 to 15 feet down the main vine, and I also like to have 18 to 20 secondary vines behind it to feed it.
Do you bury the roots off of the secondary vine? and put it down with the skewer sticks? and how many secondary vines are there from the main? sorry if you answered that question in this video, is it just that one secondary vine that you showed?
Yes, I bury the secondary vines. I usually have at least one set of skewers criss-crossed near the tip of the vine to keep it stable and prevent it from blowing around. In this video, you can only see one secondary vine, but your plant will produce many more!
Good work lady!
Wow. Great save. That could have been bad. 😲👍🏻
WOW.
