I don't think Zora and Carl should have ended up together to be honest. I think Carl helped Zora grow and see a bit more of life she didn't know before. In another time and place yes, but after what happened between them no ... i think Zora changes so that she can find someone that is good for her and that she can be good for too - the second part is what she couldn't offer Carl I think

Your analysis is excellent! I had some trouble with trying to decide what she was trying to make as a point but when I found out that On Beauty is a retelling of Howard's End, I realized that I needed to go read Howard's End and then reread On Beauty. Oh and her new book Swing Time is coming out on the 15th of November. Welcome to the Zadie Smith lovers group! ;)

Wow, thank you for your kind words! I also want to read Howard's End, and see if it will change my views on On Beauty. I cannot wait for Swing Time! Maybe we can do a "co-review"? I do not know how that would work, but I have a feeling it would be cool :)

Hey. Loved your Video, great book choice. I really enjoyed the novel. Just wanted to say that I also found Kiki and Howad's love Scene evolutionary, as Zadie in General is. Did you try her pother books? You should. I did have my difficulties with the Autograph Man, but found the others amazing and NW is so different from the rest, so much more difficult and such a development in style is visible. Can't wait for Swing Time! I did not really think Zora and Carl should endup together. I totally agree with your Point about the physicality, but just found their characters too different. And maybe this also has to do with te fact that On Beauty is a pastiche of Howard's End by E.M. Forster, so she maybe just had to stick to the model a little?

vir Ginnya thank you for watching and for your comment! I am definitely planning on reading more of her books. I have heard several people say the same thing about Autograph man, I still want to read it though. Thanks for reminding me that On Beauty is a pastiche, I watched an interview where she talked about this, but I never looked up Forster's book. Glad you are agree re Kiki and Howard :) Keep well!

Thaks for answering. Yes I also want to read Autograph Man again ... and I don't know if you are into modernist books, but to me, Howard's End was a wonderful read itself, one of those which kept me putting bookmarks all over cause I wanted to remember the quotes :D Looking forward to your net video. All the best

completely agree with you on the author's choice of difficult themes. also, I too, found this book a tad hard to digest.

Great review. I found few of her characters particularly likable although they were not wholly dubious, either. But I liked Levi, too!
