Don't feel bad Zadie. Stalker is a chore to get through.
The Mirror and Solaris on the other hand. REAL GOOD.

In fairness to Tarkovsky, Stalker wasn't really made to be watched on a laptop.

I don't understand her distinction between Top Hat and "really good cinema." And I don't even really like musicals!

I’m with her on Stalker (though I love the Strugatsky bros). Love the screwball comedies too. Top Hat-pretty great first movie. Yay, Zadie.

I remember someone asked this airhead why she referenced another book and she didn't even read it...

If she doesn't like Stalker, then I'm suspicious of her value as an artist. It might keep me away from her books, which is probably my loss..

reading thorugh the comments i see a lot of disappointment in her lack of appreciation for stalker; I don't think that's it. Rather I think that she appreciates dialogue as opposied to visuals. I think she'd love Tarantino, Scorcese, PT Anderson, De Palma, or films that have mass appeal but also artistic appeal like Amelie, or Singing in the Rain, or Tampopo. Stalker is dour, but it's also langorous and lugubrious. I love it, but if you see it with the option of a "II" button you're ability to appreciate it is fucked; you really have to go to the cinema and enjoy it.
