I’m gunna be honest, the Simba ads worked, I had to go chug a glass of water after watching this lol. The only one of these “radioactive sodas” I’ve tried is Mtn Dew, which I didn’t really like, but it’s still cool to see the history of these things! Also can we take a moment to appreciate the amount of editing this took! Respect!
You forgot one: Kick. Kick came out in the mid-60s and it was RC's shot at the "reanimator juice" market. Pretty good, too; imagine a brisker version of Ski...a little more lemon-forward. Far as I know, though, it didn't survive the ownership scuffle over RC in the 2000s. Sun-drop, however... it's fundamentally different from Mtn. Dew in that Dew uses citrus flavors, whereas Sun-drop has always been made with citrus JUICES. This is the reason for the "bits" in it, as the juice solids would "clump" in the soda. Mtn. Dew's original formulation also used juice until the 1970s, when PepsiCo switched to flavorings. Part of this was an appearance thing, too; PepsiCo's market testing showed (at the time) that customers were wary of the floating citrus juice clumps in Sun-drop. From personal experience, though... Sun-drop was and IS the king. It's always been loaded with caffeine, and the flavor lacks the odd "oiliness" of Mtn. Dew. And slamming down a bottle on the way to my 8 AM undergrad classes made damn sure that I stayed awake...then had enough extra energy to claw my way through a stack of wallboard afterward. Sun-drop even had a NASCAR tie-in in the 1980s and 90s, releasing the first 20 oz bottles tagged as "The Intimidator". Given the amount of caffeine in one of those, you can see what was so intimidating about it! 👍
Thank you for this wonderful comment and analysis! I did know about that Sun Drop NASCAR promotion! Truly wonderful! Oh shoot! I totally did forget about Kick! I’d heard about it, but man that totally slipped my mind! Kick has such a wonderful can design! Thanks for watching!
Yes! More Soda lore! Fantastic job editing this video. I've never seen more than half of these drinks in Canada. That series of Simba commercials is so cringe. Will definitely keep my eye out for "Kickapoo Joy Joice" next time I'm stateside.
Thanks so much for watching! Glad you enjoyed! I can definitely hook you up with some Kickapoo Joy Juice! And cringe is a good way to describe em, I’d also use tone deaf as well lol.
@@StarWarsExpandedUniverse I honestly think covering pop is a neat niche. I think it would be really cool if you looked into some of the lesser known underground pop brands of the northwest
Sprite and 7 Up are lemon lime sodas, not citrus sodas that would be considered to be lemon, lime, orange blends. I have a whole video covering the history of lemon lime sodas like Sprite and 7-Up!
The Throwback Mountain Dew was the best I had tried, with the possible exception of the seasonal ones. "Ordinary" Mtn Dew tastes like sugar, chemicals, CO2 and citric acid. Plus anything that color ought to glow in the dark.
“The citrus soda afterlife” 😂👍🏻 I’ve tried Mountain Dew once or twice I believe. Wasn’t the biggest fan of it (I know, I know in crazy), just not my jam, but I would like to try Ale8! It sounds interesting 😃 A kind of combination of citrus drinks and ginger ale! 🤤 Anyway, now I’m craving lemon-lime sodas! 😂 Oh no.
I strongly considered including Squirt, but rather than being a lemon/lime/orange citrus soda, it’s a grapefruit beverage; so I considered it to be more of a competitor to Fresca!

As a guy living in Georgia I have never seen Ski in my entire life lol
The first Ski I ever had was in South Carolina. Delicious stuff! I’d definitely try some of you can manage to find it somewhere
it's like the Opposite to Pepsi's Lack of a Stable Lemon Lime Soda Brand.

Yeah Throwback Dew is solid! The real cane sugar helps it a lot!
those simba ads are crazy. good algorithm luck :)
They are pretty wild! Thanks for watching! And thanks for the luck! The video is performing better than I'd been expecting haha!
i refuse to believe this video only has 148 views
Haha thank you! Glad you liked it!

@@StarWarsExpandedUniverse what do you recommend after Mountain Dew
@@big_dro1713 I’d highly recommend Ski and Mello Yello is pretty good. If you can get some Surge that’s solid too!

The simba commericals 😂
They're certainly something haha!

Yes, the first lemon-lime soda, as opposed to citrus sodas. I have a whole video covering the history of lemon lime sodas linked in the description!
great video :D
Thank you! 😁
Just commenting before this video blows up
Haha thanks for commenting! We shall see!
Make more investigative content. These are the questions I want answers to.
Thanks so much for watching man! Glad you enjoyed! What are some other soda related questions you have?
I live in Ohio. Sky is available here? Never heard of it but I remember Double Cola in the 70s
Yeah Ski should be available specifically in the southern counties of Ohio. Thanks for watching! Double Cola is a classic!
Got dayum. Nice
Thank you!
Ale 81! Not "Ale 8" it literally explains itself as "A Late One" hence "Ale 81"
Oh that’s so cool! I missed that! Thanks for letting me know!
Vault was good
I really wish I could have tried it!
Was that a scrotum bag the simba was in ? Lol ski wins my op. When its mt.dew or ski well ski always finds the fridge when available.
Wow! Nice! Good to see some Ski love!
@StarWarsExpandedUniverse if you know your ski then originally it's from Clinton county Illinois.
@@matth1851 I love me some Ski!
Ale81 is a stronger ginger ale...it's not a citrus anything.
To me it tastes like a blend of citrus and ginger. No where near as strong as say a ginger beer.

Seems like a big miss. 7up 1929. The original.
The original "lemon lime" soda yes. But not the original "citrus" soda which would be lemon, lime, orange.
