I don't think Francis's wife died of old age.
You can tell by how he choked the chicken
hahahaha
Agreed.
u can look the end of the song and thnk that they are who are really dead, i dont think any of they are bad guys :)
hahahahahah
This song helped me overcome my mourning over the death of my wife by committing a variety of war crimes. Much love.
That was incredibly touching in a very sociopathic way.
Yes
Yeah
+AerialChaos I dont know how it could be touching since no sociopath would find it touching since they're devoid of emotion
I was thinking the same thing
+Axe Avier He means that he empathised with the situation of these old men, even though they (well, at least Francis) demonstrate sociopathy, not that sociopaths will be touched. Anyway, I'm not even sure sociopaths don't feel anything; I once read they do, different prom psychos, who are basically robots, they are just extremely geared towards doing anything to achieve what they desire.
The Ylvis brothers has got to be the world's least predictable song writers.
"Ahuiah hi ahuiah hi"
(What does the fox say)
How do you expect someone to expect this
@Alex Fox lol no
Hahah yes
@Alex Fox no.
@1001foxes Absolutely not. Their name is Ylvisaker. It's the short version of their name.
" 'Life's a bitch' a wise man said.
'No matter what, you'll end up dead
And the only thing you can wish for, is a friend' " that was deep.
at first i actually thought it was going to be a serious song about the meaning of life.
then i realised this was ylvis.
+Sans I still think it was.
Yeah it actually was..
maybe. The main focus is comedy though.
this song is about 2 old desperate old men who lost their wife, i think this is serious enough
It definitely has a serious core, and that makes it even more awesome.
You take your wife for granted, as a man you might forget what positive influence she has on you. Then one day she is gone forever and with no one to rein you in, you go haywire. There is an empty wifeshaped void that you fill with whatever makes your numbed senses come alive. You throw rocks, you shoot horses, because anything less would mean nothing in your grayed out lonely world. In the end, all it boils down to is that you might have a friend, who is as broken as you perhaps, who has a hat. All we can ever hope for is a friend that we tolerate, and more importantly seems to tolerate us, brokenness and all. Then all is ok.
'.... don't you worry 'bout me now. I'm doing just fine on my own.' No, you are not! But with a friend you just might.
"Francis choked that chicken with his hands.
But watching them die,
he started to cry.
I'm bored - Francis said.
Let's steal a car."
This is just perfect.
Minoxis i don’t think he said “I’m bored” I think he said “I’m Bård” seeing as only one of them sings that part, and that is the guy named Bård.
So funny that verse.
@@hanseinarfuglum8858 he said " I'm bored" ..that's why it so funny :D that he said he's bored so I go do that :D
@@hanseinarfuglum8858 captions
Sanctus Paulus None of the caracters are called Bård, the guy singing is. You hear how only one of them sings that part? It is the one of the two brothers who is called Bård.
The finest Simon and Garfunkel song not written or performed by Simon and Garfunkel
Yeah, reminds me Simon & Garfunkel as well.
With story by Roald Dahl, not written by Roald Dahl
To me it sounds like the song 'The last thing on my mind '.. an old folk song, I know it performed by Sandy Denny.
This song is basically a reskinned version of "The Boxer", and their other song "Engine for Gabriel" is hauntingly similar to "Cecilia". It most certainly is intentional, and I love it
The beginning's harmonization reminds me of Blue October's Into the Ocean.
Not sure if I want to laugh or cry? my emotions just went bananas, this is beautiful.
same here
I didnt Even have a chance to resist so i did both
Yeah!
Same
+Fabiana Kassab Same! Even though it's a joke song it really is emotional!
"Life´s a bitch," a wise man said
"No matter what, you´ll end up dead,
And all that you can wish for is a FRIEND..."
These lines are so true that it almost hurts... You just gotta love Ylvis
+Blanka K Those are really great lines.. thank you for listing them :)
"And he shot a horse
So I shot a horse"
so touching
+Bibbedibob and then he chocked a chiken and he cryed ;(
😄😄😄😀😀😀😀😀😄😄😄😄😀😀😀😂😂😂😂😀😀😀
+Vemund Kjelløken that one gets me every time 😢 shows that all the crazy things he does is symptom of sorrow!
+Blanka K Haha I read this exactly when that part came!
This is by far their best song. The lyrics, melody, cinematography, acting... they all meddle in a beautifully fun, yet melancholic song, which perfectly embodies the human condition.
It's upsetting to see that it's of their lesser known songs, especially when you compare it to "what does the fox says"
Honestly the fact that an obscure comedy bands most random song hit it big out of nowhere making fox noises is kinda perfect
Its up there, I posit that Massachusetts is their best.
My grandpa died a week ago. I‘m crying right now, deeply touched. Thank you for the song... I’m gonna take care of my grandma and make sure she doesn’t throw rocks from her balcony ;)
Cherish her with all your might, and sorry about your grandpa. I lost my grandma a month ago. :(
Maybe you should let her, it might help,.
Please let her throw rocks
I am 12 my great grandpa passed away a few months ago. His name was francis and he always wore a fedora. As soon as we arrived to the funeral this song immediately came to mind. We played it for his friends and neighbors and his wife and everyone thought it was hilarious. My great grandma listens to it every single day. This song always reminds us of him and how funny he was. Even though this song was made as a joke and I’m commenting this seven years later, it helped lots of people emotionally too. Thank you ❤
Wow. Through its strangely emotional.
❤❤❤, anlso love her humor
I sing the acceptable parts of this song at work quite often. Today a coworker asked me what song it was. I smiled and told her to look it up. Pretty sure she knows I'm a terrible person now. :)
Holy shit this song started so soft and it turned so dark. I love it.
This song is ridiculous. And I think it's one of the best songs about loss, friendship, and the absurdity of life. I choke up every time I play it.
I have to say the acting from the old men in this video is amazing. The looks of thinly-veiled horror on the protagonist's face as Francis's behaviour escalates are absolutely brilliant. Also the part when Francis himself almost breaks but then suddenly snaps out of it and says "I'm bored"... Genius! Though I wouldn't expect anything less from Ole Martin Hafsmo!
it's 2020 and after all these years i'm still trying to understand how can i pass the entire song laughing bout the lyrics and always end up with my eyes full of tears at the same time hahaha
I feeeeeel that so deeply
I don't think I can add anything to what you said, except for my total agreement with it.
it's 2022 and after all these years i'm still trying to understand how can i pass the entire song laughing bout the lyrics and always end up with my eyes full of tears at the same time hahaha
I know this is tongue-in-cheek humor, but this song summed up what an old friendship was to me. My best friend and I hadn't spoken in years out of anger and foolish shit. I sent him this link. Next thing I know we are laughing and fishing and shooting horses like old times! Thanks Ylvis for saving our bromance!
hold on a minute now....
Bro literally shot a horse
Why hasn`t this crazy masterpiece gone (more)viral yet?
I agree!
+GameOfThomas because ylvis hype is dead. People had high hopes for the fox follow-up, but makkakoko and trucker's hitch didn't cut it, so people forgot about them.
havardmj I`m norwegian, so the Fox song was just another comedy bit in their talk show to me and far, far from the funniest thing they have done. This song is much more in line with their dark and clever humour.
it is sad and funny at the same time.. awesome.
The line "Oh Margaret, oh Margaret, don't you worry 'bout me now. I'm doing just fine on my own." is truly heartbreaking. They are obviously far from fine, they have both just latched on to each other because neither can face their grief or accept their aloneness. Francis being further down the route of distruction, acting as a backwards mentor.
You can see the desperation in Francis as he keeps moving from distraction to distraction, because he knows exactly what he is doing, what sort of life he is dooming his new friend to, but he can't face the fact and instead buries it under more and more violent acts, just like all his other feelings.
The main old man clings to Francis, gladly letting him fill the fresh void inside him as a new life companion. He sees Francis' evident lost sanity as proof of where he is going himself and therefore won't fight it. His horror at Francis actions are also a misguided assumption, again based on his blind trust in Francis, that only terrible things can cut through his numbness now. He is horrified of what he thinks that means about him, and what he has become.
It shows the risks of codependency, for fostering blind trust and loss of autonomy, but also the vulnerability of someone going through grief: How easy it is to latch onto destructive habits, when everything feels numb and meaningless.
It's absolutely astounding lyricism and cinematography.
Is it bad that I found this song really touching and inspirational...?
No...
**goes to a bridge and starts throwing rocks at cars ...**
**aiming at the kids**
What did it inspire it you to do? D:
It depends on what it does you inspire to do ^^
Simon & Garfunkel's CD-box from 1997 is called "Old Friends". The first line here is "I saw you at the railway station", the first line in "Homeward Bound" is "I'm sitting at the railway station".
+Quirentia I noticed that too. Although the whole song itself is more reminiscent of "The Boxer", I also thought of "Homeward Bound" because of the railway station line.
True. And "The Boxer" also has the line "In the quiet of a railway station".
+Quirentia I was just coming back to write that very same thing. Just listened to it ("The Boxer"). This also reminds me a little of a bit that the Smother's Brothers did ages ago. They sang "The Streets of Laredo" on their comedy show and when they were singing "I see by your outfit that you are a cowboy, the last line Tommy Smother's sang was "if you get an outfit you can be a cowboy too". It kind of reminds me of the "and he had a hat, and I had a hat" part. I know it's kind of far fetched, but I've heard speculation that Ylvis may have had some early Smother's Brothers influence also, although I don't think that's been confirmed, by any means.
+Marilyn Tregaskis-Smith As for the content I'd vote for S&Gs underrated "Old friends". "Old friends, winter companions, the old men. Lost in their overcoats, waiting for the sunset.
+Quirentia It reminds me of "A most peculiar man", since this has the same storytelling and slightly morbid style.
I cried 😢
Me too penguin 😢
me too ertuğrul
+deniz erdoğan cried too :/
i have a theory about this song. i believe that our protagonist had been mentally unstable for most of his life, supressing intense feelings of anger and violence, and his beloved wife was the only thing keeping him sane. after her passing, he finally snapped. see, i think the protagonist suffers from some form of dissociative identity disorder, more commonly known as split personality, and this "francis" is a persona he created as a vehicle for the violent rage that his wife had kept in check, now free to run amok after her passing. Notice how the protagonist and Francis both have hats. The hats are a metaphor. they are symbolic of their psychological connection, that they are truly one and the same. When Francis cries when he strangles the chicken, that is a bit of the protagonist shining through the cracks, coming to his senses, however momentarily, and realizing just how horrible his actions are. Considering how swiftly francis reassumes control, it would seem to our protagonist that he did not even realize it was him crying, not francis, further blurring the lines between the two personalities. Truly a tragic song about a man pushed over the edge by greif.
Cactusman129 Another thing to help your point is the rock part where the protagonist says not to throw anymore rocks but Francis does anyway yet the protagonist continues to follow. Also the horses being set free would seem to be great contrast to rock tossing but it, like everything else, goes bleak yet the protagonist follows anyway, almost as though he is completely powerless.
I started reading this thinking it was far fetched, but watching the video again with this in mind, it makes sense. Cool theory (:
but this is Ylvis
Cactusman129 I do relieve is simplier than that, Just two friends reuniting after a life at its end, beautiful and pure
Aaron Prendas Throwing rocks at children in a car and shooting poor innocent horses. Surely, it's beautiful and pure.
My dad is 82 and a widower. He came to visit me in NYC back in 2010. A big snowfall on xmas. He and I fell down in the fresh snow in front of the NY Stock Exchange and made snow angels. No one was around. One of the happiest moments of my life.
That is why this song makes me so happy!
So evil and beautiful at the same time! Ylvis the masters of ambivalence! I wish there would be so brilliant comedians in germany... This song is not just excellent written, performed and produced, but is also putting the finger on the wound of our mortaility and human darker sides in a way that you can laugh about. A stroke of genius!
best ylvis song of all
This song will be popular. Mark my words!
+Bongodongo this comment wil get over 15 likes. Mark my words!
benn61 You are a wizard! Mark my words!
Bongodongo sure i am a wizzard. pick a card and write it as a reply
benn61 You forgot "Mark my words!"!!!!!! Mark my Words
pick a card. Mark my words'!
Still coming back to this gem. On an Ylvis marathon. I firmly believe they deserve same recongnition that The Lonely Island got
Couldnt agree more
They’re way more committed than Lonely Island. Those guys just did a project. Ylvis are a BAND.
the "Francis is helping me move on" part is weirdly beautiful
The bridge is beautiful, "Oh Margaret oh Margaret." Nothing like sibling voices doing harmonies.
the only music video without subtitles. it must be special. it is special. thank you ylvis for existing.
+Illumimartin Wow, didn't realize this until now.
2022 and i still think this is one of their best songs.
Hello darkness my old friend
+Dudu Channel I've come to talk to you again.
+Lynn Cooper because a vision softly creeping
+Lars Holtet Left its seeds while I was sleeping
+arwena102 And the vision that was planted in my brain
+mefagar still remains....
This one made me laugh and cry at the same time. Beautiful tragicomedy. This is a new level!
don't cry
craft
Funny, strange, perfect, odd, clever, awesome ----- love, love, love the harmony. No shuffleboard for these older guys!
Im aiming at the kids! wtf!! hahahhaha
+Sander Lura-Wiik Do it as Bieber does :)
+Titina de Cassovia BURN! lol
Just like Michael Jackson
That's what took the cake I thought I'd give it a chance but that doesn't make me feel good about this song...
"I'm aiming for the kids"...
this is the best dark, tragic, comic, funny, contemplative, emotional, disturbing, country song I have heard all rolled into one!
Both Bård and Vegard are soooo handsome here!
FINALLY a singable duet without a weird non-melodic chorus! Thank you, Ylvis, I practically have tears in my eyes this is so good.
Literally one of the most beautiful songs ever written about friendship. Sometimes satire surpasses actual art. I sent this to 2 of my best friends. The one really liked it. Now he likes to ask if I have my hat, or if Ryan has his hat. LOL. Good, we all have hats.
I think they must've read my mind, I have wanted a full-acoustic song from them for ages and ages! I love when they sing harmonies, I could sit and listen to them doing it 24/7 basically :)
I agree, beautiful music with twisted lyrics!
+Sonja H IMO it could have been even more melodic, would have added both to the song and the uncomfortable juxtaposition.
You , I like you, No really, I've wanted the same
the most underrated song ever
My best friend passed away in 2019. We loved Ylvis and always sung their songs together as it was the perfect humour for the two of us. This always brings back memories
This song has more character development than most movies and tv shows...
4 years after I first saw this, still my favorite song. Is Francis a good guy distracting his new buddy from his wife's recent death, or is he just a sociopath dragging along someone who is all alone? Or maybe I'm just overanalyzing humor, but even if that is the case this is so good.
Saw another theory suggesting that Francis might be imaginative and the other person was actually having a psychotic breakdown after his wife died
It would be awesome if FineBros did an Elder's react to this video lol
YES!! Let's all go to their last "elders react" video and Ylvis-spam the shit outta it!!
+StitchGV I left a "I just left a "Elders React to Ylvis "Old Friends"!"-comment on their "Elders React to Deez Nuts Vine Compilation". Hope more people do it, so we can make this happen! I think the Elders will love "Old Friends"!
+Quirentia I hope they do a reaction, I agree that the Elders will probably love it.
+Sarah Palmer
To make this happen we really need a lot of people comment "Elders React to Ylvis "Old Friends" on the FineBros Elders react videos, and a lot of people liking those comments. Just saying, liking and hoping it here won't make it happen. I've done my part, but a comment made hours will disappear in the flood of other people wishing for other things, so find it, like it and make more comments. I made one comment on the old "Elders react to Ylvis - The Fox"-video too, but I don't think anyone checks that anymore. It's better to spam the most recent one "Elders React to Deez Nuts Vine Compilation". Ylvis fans unite! We can do this!
I asked for the Elders to respnd
simon and garfunkel! :D
+Lissi Kete I was going to write that, until I saw your comment :P
+Lissi Kete Simon and Garfuckedup.. Awesome!
+Lissi Kete Very specifically "The Boxer" haha
😜
Yeah! And they also remind me a Rhett and Link! :)
"Life's a bitch, no matter what you end up dead, and all that you can wish for is a friend" - Wisest words of all time
I saw you at the railway station
it fills me with determination......
fuck off m8
K m8
haha. oh well.
+Ramarro Marrone O MAI GAWD, DAY MADE
+Ramarro Marrone I'm assuming it would be a genocide song based on the lyrics... so
*DETERMINATION*
Ylvis are legitimately incredible artists. Every music video they make shows an incredible understanding of writing, film, and music as artforms across all genres in order to convey their satire. You need to know the rules in order to break them. They combine their knowledge and abilities to create their art, things that reflect/critique/subvert the societal conventions that we take for granted. It's a bummer that humor is not recognized for the immense intelligence to observe, understand, and breakdown to the core what things are, particularly satirical humor. They are fantastic musicians as well, which helps to be able to sing any kind of lyric. It's always so impressive the effort and sophisticated techniques in every single video. There are fascinating concepts in all of them. For the students in university who can design their own classes, Ylvis's music videos would be amazing to analyze, they're chock full of detail to dissect in all of them even if Ylvis themselves would downplay their incredible work, they are incredibly detailed and intentional in every single aspect. Of course, all the music videos are also catchy and enjoyable to watch for everyone who doesn't want to take a deep dive as well. The thing about art is that every individual can take their own meaning and way to enjoy it, even separate from the author's intention. Ylvis rocks across all metrics.
A good point, Ylvis doesn't get enough credit for their art partly because they themselves downplay what they've made as just some silly songs and such. I think they're incredible.
My wife cry’s every time I play this song and to be honest it is somehow one of the most beautiful honest songs I’ve ever heard
I agree. A strange, but beautiful song.
I guess why so many people are saying this is sad, is because after watching it so many times, i realized... would it be sad if they were two young people doing the same stuff? i guess its because we interpret it as two old men, who lost everything they had(their wives) and they are trying to feel alive again doing those stuff, throwing rocks, stealing a car, etc... Truly beautiful.
The bridge, the whole song move me to tears every Time. Ylvis = Genius
wow i really like how this song can make you laugh, think and cry all at the same time, i really would like a full album in this style
i feel like Francis is an illusion his mind made when he lost his wife
could be
+MegaDudeman21 that would have been a great twist
Cloud
i agree, he has been with his wife for so long that the shock of losing her drove him mad
mind=blown
That kinda reminds me of Fight Club.
How is this simultaneously so heartbreakingly beautiful and horrifyingly funny. I dont know what to do now, my life feels changed forever 😅😩
Just how can someone intentionaly make something so funny and so true and sad at the same time. Both feelings are so strong, cant belive it.
so Ylvis, so brilliant, awesome
This is brilliant. Not sure how many people will "get it," but it's poignant: funny, sad, dark, & serious. Thank you.
So on point and great lyrics. Sometimes i forget that you are doing parodies. This is much more than just a parody.
Wish more people knew about this song.
These two are so underrated it’s criminal
Friendship Goals! My eyes misted a little.
I never knew I could feel so many conflicting emotions at once.
Thank you Ylvis for opening my heart to new feelings.
I love you so much Ylvis! You guys are the BEST!
"Life's a bitch. A wise man said. No matter what, you end up dead. And all you can wish for is a friend." This song is so silly and hilarious. But Damn this lyric really touches me. Such a good song.
I am so overwhelmed..... Great stuff :)
+kathykisslight I'm glad it was longer than the first one : ). Yay for extended singing!!
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂🤗🤗🤗
Oh wow, they have so beautiful voices! They sound so harmonic together. And you hear both voices so clearly 😍
Ylvis can do anything. I love them so much ! Such comedians :)
This is AWESOME!!!!!
Thank you for the laughter!!!
I love black and white videos, and the light, and the guitars...and those fucking beautiful faces!! And Ylvis too :D Good job boys!!
I LOVE YLVIS OMG 💜💜💜
Beautiful. Absolutely beautiful.
cómo me gusta ylvis, habré visto el video ya como 15 veces... ojalá sacasen un disco y canciones más a menudo
genuinely one of their greatest songs. Although vastly underrated. This needs so many more views!
omg omg omg
I can't find words to expres my feelings
so awesome
Awesome. It made me feel so strongly all my emotions one by one in such a short time.
love you guys!
Speechless. I am speechless.
That's one of very little amount of Ylvis songs that actually make you sad/overwhelmed/make you think about your life and make you type your friends. Definitely it should have more views.. It's miracle, yet mad at some point as always :3 But the end is very touching. Takk, Ylvis!
Glorious sound, nice song, love that very much. Salute
Dayumm this song deserves so much more appreciation! 😍❤🔥👌
This has been one of my favourites of them for a while now
I really want to see an Elders React to this video!
That needs to happen.
Oh my god, those two actors are amazing, and their facial expressions!
One of the best music videos i have seen in a long time. Amazeballs.
I love Ylvis and their songs, and this is no exception! I would like to challenge Ylvis to write an album of non comedic / normal songs because I think it would be just as amazing xx
+Orchids1979 They could be like Simon & Garfunkel..
+kamatz There are some people from bergen Norway who does that Kings of Convenience they're called. Check em out.
They're amazing.
amazing. touching yet thrilling. you guys put a sad song into another level!
Touching and wonderful
I love this song so much. And I'm beginning to realize that I underestimate Bård's talent. He's the one carrying the harmony on this one.
Damn this song is a emotional rollercoaster!
I'm sitting here smiling with tears in my eyes :')
Love this song.... ylvisaker is really talented...
man, they're so talented in every way
This is so good. Can not get it out of my head. This is poetry, but mayby you two geniuses laughting your asses off. But for me;'For all old mates, you are always with me.
Quel talent ces deux la ! Un humour subtil et le sens des belles mélodies. Merci #ylvis :-)
Another brilliant video. Thanks guys. You are incredible!
"And Frances's shoulder touching mine..." One of my favorite songs! Thanks Ylvis!
