1926/32 Delage DIS/D6-11 Boat-tail Sports Tourer
The Delage company was founded in 1905 by Louis Delage on the Rue Cormeilles in Lavallois-Perret, near Paris. Commencing with just three employees, one being Peugeot’s former chief engineer. The company initially produced components for Helbe, with the De Dion-Bouton engine and chassis being assembled by Helbe, with Delage adding the coachwork.
Delage introduced their first model in 1906, this being a voiturette powered by a single cylinder De Dion-Bouton engine. As with a number of early car manufacturers, Delage participated in racing and successes gained enabled the company to expand and increase production.
By 1910, a larger factory was acquired at Corbevoie and two years later350 employees were producing over 1000 cars annually, now offered with 4- and 6-cylinder engines.
Following the cessation of the Great War, Delage began production of larger cars, gaining an enviable reputation. The 1920s were to see the famous DE and DI models introduced, these being very highly regarded.
Offered for sale here is a most interesting motor car. Described a a DIS/D6-11, the car has a Di chassis, narrowed and shortened to DIS specification. All five wheels have been fully rebuilt, re-spoked and powder coated with new rims and tyres. Both front and rear axles rebuilt, new 4.4:1 CWP and sprints rebuilt with all new pins and shackles. The steering joints, kingpins and steering box have also been rebuilt.
The radiator has been re-cored, the brakes have been converted to hydraulic operation and new backplates cast. The fuel tank has been taken apart, cleaned internally and narrowed to DIS width.
The power comes from a 1932 Delage D6-11 six-cylinder engine, this being a slightly over square unit displacing 2120cc. This has been fully rebuilt with new bearings, counter balanced crank re ground and balanced, new rods, pistons and camshaft, new valves and hardened valve seats, oil pump and water pump both rebuilt. A new inlet manifold made to accept an SU HD6 carburettor. A stainless-steel exhaust system is also fitted. The engine is still running in and power output is expected to be around 75bhp.
The very stylish two-seater body is by Mike Smalls, formerly of Western Coachworks, with ash frame and panelled in aluminium with walnut inlaid into the rear deck, it is aesthetically very pleasing.
The car is light and powerful and benefits from excellent brakes, it should prove a delight for its next owner and ideal for touring, having ample luggage room behind the seats.
